An abscess is a pocket of pus. You can get an abscess almost anywhere in your body. When an area becomes infected, your body's immune system tries to fight it. White blood cells go to the infected area, collect within the damaged tissue and cause inflammation. During this process, pus forms. Pus is the buildup of fluid, living and dead white blood cells, dead tissue and bacteria or other foreign substances.
Bacteria, viruses, parasites and swallowed objects can all lead to abscesses. Skin abscesses are easy to detect. They are red, raised and painful. Abscesses inside your body may not be obvious and can damage organs, including the brain, lungs and others. Treatments include drainage and antibiotics.

Look I know I have posted this before but I left out some details... I got my belly button pierced in September and it was fine an infection here and there. Yesterday I noticed that there is a bump under the skin. The bump is in between the two pierced holes UNDERNEATH the SKIN. The bump is red and feels like a knot in there. I have done 3 salt soaks this morning. Please help me with serious answers! BTW I am going back to the place I got it pierced today after school. I can not seek medical

Resolved Question: How do I get my own place?
(Tue, 24 Jan 2012 01:43:24 GMT)
Well, I seriously need my own place due to a number of reasons. I have no job, no money and no co-signer for an apartment. I've been having to stay living with my parents because of that, but we're all living in a small cheap hotel room. I can't get a larger loan from student loans because of my living circumstances. They told me because my parents don't qualify for a loan (do to bad credit), because I'm considered their dependent until 2 - 3 more years (I'll be 21 this year) and because I liv

Resolved Question: How to put some weight on my hard keeper?
(Sat, 21 Jan 2012 00:42:42 GMT)
I own a 9 yr old 16.2 hh Thoroughbred gelding (named Skye). He is a pretty hard keeper. I ride 5-6 days a week, usually not more than an hour. The last month he has been getting back into shape after 2 months off with an abscess. I feed him pretty much unlimited timothy/ orchard hay (3-4 flakes in morning, 3-4 flakes at night) as well as grain. About every other night, he is inside when it gets very cold. He has a 200g blanket on when it gets below 32 degrees Farenheit (freezing- I think

Resolved Question: How quickly does cancer develop in domestic cats?
(Sat, 07 Jan 2012 00:50:51 GMT)
I now know why my neighbours cat is poorly although I still question the diagnosis. I am not a vet and I don't pretend to know better. Towards the end of October I felt two small lumps at the side of her cats throat whilst stroking her. I mentioned this to my neighbour who two weeks later took the cat to the vet. She told me the vet said her glands were infected and she needed antibiotics. At the time she was also told her cat needed some teeth removed as they were rotten. This cat has a

Resolved Question: Is there a natural antibiotic to fight a tooth infection?
(Fri, 30 Dec 2011 02:39:10 GMT)
I have an abscessed tooth (#30) and cannot afford to have it pulled until February. The dentist said he'd only prescribe me one week of antibiotics. I used the last of it today and have a whole month to go before I can have it surgically extracted (it has had two root canals so requires an oral surgeon to pull it) I just know the infection will come back again and spread into my ear like it did a week ago. Is there a natural antibiotic I can get online or at the health-food store? If I cannot

Resolved Question: Leg abscess - was booked in to have it drained in 2 days but tonight its broken the skin and leaking!?

I had a large hematoma on my leg, and shortly after I got that - I went to hospital and got quite sick! I got out of hospital and the hematoma now has an abscess in it! Doc gave me antibiotics today and said that she did not care to drain it today as it just looked TOO painful - she said she will drain it in 2 dayswih a local anaesthetic and hopefully most of the swelling has gone down by then. Anyhow, tonight - it has broken the skin and is leaking dark yellow pus - do I need to go back to Do

Resolved Question: Abscessed tooth and my wisdom tooth keeps irritating it.?
(Sat, 10 Dec 2011 22:58:46 GMT)
I had a root canal on my left bottom second molar about 5 years ago(it never fully healed and it remains half done) and about a year ago my wisdom tooth on that side started growing in, at a 45 degree angle. I've been plagued with mouth pain that makes it impossible to eat, drink, and sleep, for over a year, on and off every few months. Heres the kicker, I lost ALL of my health insurance 5 months before it all started, I make 20% less then the legal poverty level, but make to much to see a low

Resolved Question: My mom doesn't have health insurance and she has a tooth abscess?
(Sun, 04 Dec 2011 21:51:57 GMT)
My mom has NO health insurance because of my family's financial problems. My brother and I do, but without me knowing she has gone without health insurance. This is terrible because she has SO many health problems that are chronic and need attention. Now she has a tooth abscess and her cheek is swollen and I'm afraid it might be really serious considering she's had a black tooth that fell out and two other black teeth recently. I'm urging her to go to the dentist but SHE DOESN'T HAVE HEALTH IN

Voting Question: What to do about reoccurring abscess of the thigh?
(Wed, 30 Nov 2011 03:14:12 GMT)
A few weeks ago I went to the doctor (I have no insurance) to get a possible abscess checked out. It's located right under my right buttock, where I had a previous abscess drained. It seems to be getting better (with medication), but it hasn't gone away. Now, recently, I've felt a minor throbbing pain on under my LEFT buttock. It is red, and I know it's (possibly) an abscess. I suppose I have super sensitive skin, because I shower everyday, and this is my (if it's indeed another abscess) 4th a

It's been like this for a few months already, I know people will say thrush, I'm thinkin that's what it is.. But why? Before anyone jumps to conclusions, I've already been tested for std's and hiv, and I was negative at 6 months, and I've only had one sexual encounter, and that was protected. I do have a tooth abscess, is it possible that's causing me to have thrush and weakin my immune system? Resolved Question: Is it time to wean baby?
(Wed, 16 Nov 2011 00:55:04 GMT)
My baby is 6 months old and I want to continue breastfeeding but I'm so exhausted that my milk supply has gone so low that during the day its very hard to get baby to nurse for very long. I can spend 1 hour getting her relaxed enough to feed. 3 months ago I got a breast infection and abscess from a procedure on my left breast. This affected my supply and also my nerves (I got very worried every time I had a blocked duct and I got them every week that I just couldn't let down) I also had othe

Voting Question: My mom has a tooth infection that is resisting antibiotics and a fever. Is she going to get a brain abscess?
(Sat, 12 Nov 2011 14:56:17 GMT)
Her tooth is dead, basically, and it's actually rather blue, but it's been that way for years. She went to the dentist last week and they said they need to pull it, but they obviously can't if it is still infected. She started the antibiotics on Wednesday, but at this point, her whole cheek, cheekbone, and possibly even eye and eyelid (it's hard to tell) are swollen. Her eye feels dry and has pressure on it. She also has some ear pain on that side and yesterday (Friday) had an off and on fever

Resolved Question: What can i do to make this boil go away?!?
(Fri, 11 Nov 2011 12:42:08 GMT)
okay. I have this problem where I get boils/abscesses quite often. I shower twice a day and I sweat less than the average person. It isn't a hygeine thing. I have one right above my buttcrack (called a pilonidal abscess) and it has been causing me excruciating pain. I can barely walk and only if I take 2-3 ibuprofen eveery 4 hours. Resolved Question: I think I have developed an abscess on my ear?

I got my anti-tragus pierced, but the healing process caused me great pain so I took it out about 2 days later. Now, about 5 days after doing the piercing, the hole is closed up and it appears than an abscess has formed. I don't have health insurance. Are there any ways to treat this at home?

Voting Question: HELP! Do I need to go back to the ER, my gums are bleeding with pus?
(Tue, 08 Nov 2011 22:57:56 GMT)
I was just in the ER last night, 20 hours ago. They diagnosed me with an abscess and gave me antibiotics and I'm going to the dentist tomorrow like they said. But about an hour after leaving the ER, my gums have been bleeding/pussing every now and again. For about an hour now, they haven't stopped (not like pouring blood, but gradually seeping out, I can sometimes see it run down my teeth in the mirror). Should I go back to the ER? Can I call them, or will they just not give me much advice? I

Voting Question: Rabbit Tumor-Hard to Squishy?
(Sun, 30 Oct 2011 18:37:07 GMT)
My rabbit had a tumor on her foot about the size of an egg and rather hard. After taking her to the vet, I was told the only option for treatment was to either amputate her leg, or leave it alone and de-bulk the tumor when it becomes too much of a burden (although it would likely return almost immediately)... So I decided to try a more health oriented approach. I have been giving her ionized alkaline water and a small amount of ground garlic in her food (I know large amounts are dangerous, bu

Resolved Question: How do you determine when is the right time to put your dog to sleep?
(Sun, 30 Oct 2011 13:24:44 GMT)
My Bull-mastiff, Rino, is six and half years old. He's very large.....around 150lbs. The size of a small horse. Over the past year he has had a few health concerns, starting with abscesses on his front legs, that were treated effectively, depression over losing his brother, and a skin condition worsening. While I realize he isn't the puppy he once was and that Bull-Mastiffs on average only live to eight or so, I just didn't expect the downturn in his health so soon. He isn't much for walks an

Resolved Question: Dental abscess just popped. No health insurance/money. How can I clean it at home?
(Mon, 17 Oct 2011 00:43:52 GMT)
This morning (around 8:30am) I woke up feeling like there was a bit of food stuck between the inside of my cheek and my furthest back upper left molar. I tried fishing it out, but nothing was there. About an hour later, I realized what was actually happening was that an abscess was beginning to swell up on my gum. It took another hour or so to swell to its fullest size, which was about the size of a pea. It stayed like that, not really hurting for the most part, kind of just being annoying.

In the last three months I have been nearly constantly sick. Voting Question: Is it normal to begin realizing, and now worrying about, my own mortality during mid-20s?

I guess it's been since my early 20s, but it seems to have gotten a bit worse now. I'm in an incredible relationship, so that isn't a problem, I have a decent job that (hopefully) will start paying much more starting next year (I'm a graduate assistant and have been offered a full time job next Fall), and have a solid family. My problem is I consistently worry about the things I can't control like cancer or other diseases. I don't have health insurance and really think this has something to do

Resolved Question: Swollen right tonsil?
(Fri, 23 Sep 2011 17:44:47 GMT)
I am a 23 female with no past health problems. A few days ago I had a really bad sore throat. I thought it as strep. I went to a cvs minute clinic to get a test and it came back negative. My right tonsil is swollen. The doctor told me I should see my primary to make sure I don't have an abscess. I went yesterday and he seemed not concerned. He wasn't sure if it was abscess because the only way to tell is to stick a needle in the tonsil which he does not want to do. So he gave me clindamycin to

We've had a strained suspensory ligament (he was on box rest for three months), compacted tooth (had to be removed at the Royal (Dick) Vet's), he's had an abscess, lost more shoes than I bear to count, a back problem when we first got him... Basically, a lot of stuff has happened to him, and people keep telling me 'Oh, its classic TBs, they are so fine and delicate), and other TBs on the yard don't help this

(Tue, 13 Sep 2011 21:40:32 GMT)
Hello there, I'm 16 and am pretty sure I have a tooth abscess on the flat bit of gum behind my last bit of molar. For a few days I have been feeling slight sensitivity when drinking water (Nothing painful) but despite brushing it didn't go away. Today a small red lump has formed. It hurt a little bit but is now painless. It is bright red and a perfect dome shape. In 2007, I had a root canal on tooth #10 which is a Upper left lateral incisor. My dentist said I didn't need a crown, she filled it with a composite which hasn't broken or anything. She didn't do my root canal, I went to a root canal specialist. He said I didn't need a crown either. I'm having some pain in the area, I feel like it's interproxim

I've been calling veterinarians and horse-people left and right, asking about the possible health problems my mare might have. From my previous posts about her being lame and recovering you may already know that she's shoed in the front, had an abscess below her knee/above coronet on both forelegs with two on her right fore. Resolved Question: Can I get away with wearing ankle-length riding tights in hunter shows?

I'm just a primadonna, I'll admit it. I think normal, thick, canvas-like breeches are unbearable and I absolutely HATE wearing them. Even in freezing cold weather (and I live in a really cold, snowy state, and will be moving to Canada next year for college) I wear riding tights with paddock boots. And this hasn't been a problem for the past four years of high school, since my horse (the horse I've leased for six years) has had so many health problems (everything from arthritis to diabetes to c

Resolved Question: Can having Diabetes and MRSA kill me?

I have Type 1 Diabetes and it is pretty poorly controlled. I just got out of DKA. I also have MRSA, and it seems to never go away for very long. I'm allergic to what the doctors say is the best way to treat it (Vancomycin), and practically immune to most other antibiotics they've prescribed to treat it (Bactrim, etc.). I want to know what the chances of me dying from this really are. I'm 18, I have a pretty nonexistent immune system, and I have two abscesses from the infection right now. The d

Resolved Question: Are you an indoor or outdoor cat person? I keep mine indoors...why take the chance?
(Sun, 17 Jul 2011 14:59:07 GMT)
Statistics indicate that the life span of an indoor cat is much longer than an outdoor cat. On average, an indoor cat lives twelve years but some cats can live for as many as twenty years. In comparison, an outdoor cat’s life expectancy is usually about 5 years. The pros of keeping a cat indoors out number the cons of an indoor cat. Most are directly related to the health and safety of the cat. The first valid reason to make a cat an indoor pet is traffic. Busy highways, roads, suburban stre

When I went to go see a horse I am looking at buying, I noticed that he was limping a bit, so the owner told me to come back in a few days to see if he would get better (he had a rock in his hoof that day). When I went to see him today, it was a lot worse! He was having a bunch of trouble walking, and he was babying his front left hoof. I ended up not getting to ride him because of his lameness, but I checked him out by picking his hooves and giving him a rub down. The owner suggests that it m

(Tue, 24 May 2011 02:54:09 GMT)
Hello horse section. Some of you may know that Noblesse got his vet check today, and I thought I should inform you on how it went (this comes with a question, don't worry). Luckily, Nobu is doing quite well for his age (fifteen). He has minor arthritis in one leg, but that is expected of a senior fourth-level dressage horse like him. While lunging him out of the arena, they found an abscess and it drained. That definitely helped his movement. News on his colic surgery a couple of years ago

Resolved Question: Need advice to diagnose my general head discomfort.?
(Sat, 21 May 2011 22:21:38 GMT)
I had a tooth abscess on extraction site # 17 (my lower left jaw, last molar at the back in my case )that was popped by an oral surgeon on Apr. 4. I had 2 and a half week's worth of CLINDAMYCIN 150mg/cap. to be taken every 6 hours. On the night of Apr. 19, I saw a circular pattern that wouldn't go away even if I close an eye, both my eyes or stare anywhere. I rested for a bit and it went away only to be replaced by a localized head ache on the left side of the head and at the back of my eye.

Voting Question: Health: Bumps in groin area below the waist?
(Wed, 18 May 2011 08:04:40 GMT)
Ok so I have what almost look like little white heads above my genital area. almost like boils i guess. They hurt when you touch them or apply pressure to them. I am only sexually active with my girlfriend of one year and we use condoms when we do have sex. She was my first girl to have sex with. Never had anything appear like this before. I did a little research and really dont think it could be herpes or genital warts. I found something called abscess which i think it might be. the symptom

Resolved Question: what kind of treatment for a reoccurring abscess near perineum?
(Mon, 16 May 2011 22:18:28 GMT)
Hi all, I am not a native English speaker and haven't used Yahoo Answers before, however I need an urgent advice so I am writing here, sorry for term or language mistakes from now. I had a painful lump on left side of perineum 2 months ago and it was so painful that I couldn't walk, sit or sleep one day and found myself in the emergency in the middle of the night, few doctors examined me and told that I should have the operation same day, or else it would get bigger or more painful. The treat

Resolved Question: abscess on vagina near upper thigh?
(Wed, 11 May 2011 23:25:10 GMT)
It started out as a bump, and i saw the head of the bump and so i decided to try and pop it. I googled and I am guessing it is an abscess. It is not very big, maybe the size of a mosquito bite, but it is hard now, and since i tried popping it, it now stings. Im a 22 year old, and I haven't been sexually active in a very long time...so im guessing its something else. Just an abscess. DO they pop on their own? I don't have health insurance so I cannot afford a surgeon. Its not that big and it d

Resolved Question: Im scared of the dentist...& anxiety & idk what to do?
(Sat, 16 Apr 2011 03:20:08 GMT)
So...this situation is tricky tricky. I had a panic attack like 4 months back & have never had one before. But i think i did because i have had an abscessed tooth for awhile. Last time i went to the dentist (like a week b4 that happened) i got a cleaning & they said my tooth was decaying but my dad rescheduled the apt. So anyways i had a panic attack & havnt been right sinse, i really think that what made my anxiety so bad was that i had an infection. Also i've never had an infection like this
