Wild animals usually avoid people. They might attack, however, if they feel threatened, are sick, or are protecting their young or territory. Attacks by pets are more common. Animal bites rarely are life-threatening, but if they become infected, you can develop serious medical problems.
To prevent animal bites and complications from bites
- Never pet, handle or feed unknown animals
- Leave snakes alone
- Watch your children closely around animals
- Vaccinate your cats, ferrets and dogs against rabies
- Spay or neuter your dog to make it less aggressive
- Get a tetanus booster if you have not had one recently
- Wear boots and long pants when you are in areas with venomous snakes

Open Question: Have you seen a vampire?
(Tue, 14 Feb 2012 08:29:34 GMT)
When I was 6 years old my parents had a dentist file my eye teeth down, because they protruded over my lip. They said I looked evil. Over my youth there were a few times when I asked myself if there were vampires and on occasion thought I may have caught the tiniest glimpse of them. There were a couple of times where I became spooked. I had a period in my life where I was fighting a lot at my high school, and was afraid of the bigger kids hurting me, and I used to day dream about biting onto

Voting Question: Can Health Department call & threaten to kill your animal, or else call CPS on you?
(Tue, 07 Feb 2012 16:11:58 GMT)
Our 3 year old daughter put her finger in the bunny cage after a trip, and the hungry bunny bit her finger. first time ever biting anyone. we hold the bunny and feed them by hand and never had fear of them biting, and still do not. Anyway, after a week from the bite incident her cut bled so we decided to have it checked by a doctor in case it needed a stitch or two, & to see if it was infected, as in not clean and such. Well, the next day the County Health Department called us and said they ha

Resolved Question: 1 and a half year old dog still having accidents?
(Tue, 24 Jan 2012 06:44:44 GMT)
I foster/rescue cats and dogs. I have 4 dogs of my own. 2 pitbulls, a min pin, and a lab/chow mix. I have no problem potty training my dogs, or my foster dogs. But this lab/chow mix just won't learn! I took her in when she was about 7 weeks old. A group of kids were beating on her, so I took her from them with the intentions of rehoming her, but I fell in love with her. She is a great dog, still play bites which needs to stop, but other than that she's great. Except the soiling issues. She kno

Resolved Question: My dog with fear aggressive tendency's bit me last Saturday while training, should I get the rabies vaccine?
(Fri, 20 Jan 2012 15:06:58 GMT)
The dog was current on all his vaccines and had not been in contact with wild animals. When he bit me I had three pairs of pants on due to the cold, but no hole or tears were in any of the pants. However, the skin was cut. The dog has since been euthanized for other issues (his fear biting was too much to risk with children around). I went to the doctor on Wednesday because the bruising had increased and they created a bite report. That doctor prescribed an antibiotic. Now because the dog is n

Resolved Question: How quickly does cancer develop in domestic cats?
(Sat, 07 Jan 2012 00:50:51 GMT)
I now know why my neighbours cat is poorly although I still question the diagnosis. I am not a vet and I don't pretend to know better. Towards the end of October I felt two small lumps at the side of her cats throat whilst stroking her. I mentioned this to my neighbour who two weeks later took the cat to the vet. She told me the vet said her glands were infected and she needed antibiotics. At the time she was also told her cat needed some teeth removed as they were rotten. This cat has a

Resolved Question: My cat is continuously attacking me?
(Wed, 21 Dec 2011 20:35:54 GMT)
Okay, so unlike all the other Yahoo! questions about attacking cats, my cat has not recently began to scratch and bite me, but rather had been after her first month with me. I've had her for about year now, and she continuously attacks me unless she's in her heat cycle (my dad doesn't want to 'waste' his money spaying a cat) or during times when I've just 'returned' from a period of time away from her, for example when I sleep, and when I wake up or when I go out of town for a short while with

Resolved Question: Why does my cat have such an attitude?
(Sun, 18 Dec 2011 02:39:32 GMT)
We got my cat at three and a half months old. She was meowing outside my mom's work trying to get in. They brought her in and she was there for a day until my mom decided to bring her home. She can be so sweet sometimes. She lets me hold, hug, and kiss her. She sleeps with me and my mom. She kind of goes back and forth to who she feels like sleeping with that night. We are really good to her. Honestly we treat her like a baby. lol. She is spoiled. She is very mean though. She has a very sassy a

Resolved Question: How are you suffering in this USA world?
(Mon, 12 Dec 2011 01:05:25 GMT)
Tell the world your story of how raising costs and a failing job mark, ect is making you suffer. Like so, I'm a stay at home mother on SSID, my husband brings home about $500.00 a week and I bring that in a month. We have tried everything to get help with rising food costs, heat cost, and heath care cost, and everywhere we go we're told he makes to much money a month. One place told us, he was over the limit by $3.00, and that those $3.00 would make ALL the differences each month when buying

Resolved Question: Are mixed breed dogs helthier than pure breed?
(Sun, 11 Dec 2011 22:31:57 GMT)
Do you think that's true ? I was reading this article and it said 'A Time magazine article on the effects of overbreeding reported that as many as 25 percent of the 20 million purebred dogs in the US are afflicted with a serious genetic problem. Mixed breeds, on the other hand, have something called hybrid vigor. When you mix two or more separate gene pools, the recessive genes that carry the health problems are buried. As a result, you get a healthier animal. Simply put, mixed-breed dogs

Resolved Question: Would MMA be in a different state of fighting if state comissions allowed a concept of no rules?
(Tue, 06 Dec 2011 15:52:26 GMT)
Everybody here is probably a UFC/MMA fan just like me, but what would it be if it did not have rules? Everybody talks about how wrestling is a good base to start off in the sport of MMA, but yet every fighter I see has no true essence to fighting. Not to say that they cannot fight or that they are not good at what they do, on the contrary they are very good at what they do. My point is, is that rules put a cloak over true fighting and shows audiences a watered down version of something so natu

Resolved Question: Am I expecting too much from my cat?
(Tue, 06 Dec 2011 13:35:10 GMT)
Over the years we have adopted several cats - house cats and feral barn cats - and had good success with the animals adapting quickly. We have two dogs that will both respect a cat that isn't interested and hisses and will listen when we tell them to leave the cat alone. We adopted her Friday night, 12/2. She spent the night hiding under the hutch in our dining room. I tried to force her out (food/water/litter box) and until I turned the light off she wouldn't budge. Once she got out I left h

Resolved Question: The right way to teach a baby the proper way to treat a dog?
(Tue, 06 Dec 2011 00:31:26 GMT)
My workplace is very child and animal friendly. Always has been. I have worked there for over 35 years and my husband over 30 years. My *right hand* super wonderful assistant brought her first born to work. She took 3 weeks leave and here she comes. Baby and all that goes with it. Cannon was raised at our plumbing shop. When he was close to 2 years, Chrissy got pregnant again, had the baby 5 weeks early, took 2 weeks off, Cannon started Day Care and tiny Ashlyn came to work. All of the

Resolved Question: What can I do to make my cat love me?
(Wed, 30 Nov 2011 16:26:22 GMT)
I got a kitty from someone who couldn't take care of her animals. The cat needed to be under severe treatment for ringworm and a bunch of health related stuff. Since I was the only one taking him to the vet every week, bath him twice a week, applied the medicines and all that, now he associates me with bad things, of course he doesn't get it that I'm not trying to hurt him but to help. I'm so very sad over this, because every time I try to pet him he tries to bite me and gives me a nasty upse

Resolved Question: Why is my cat so cuddly now? She never used to be like this?
(Tue, 29 Nov 2011 02:35:34 GMT)
My fiance and I rescued our cat, Luna, from the animal shelter. When we first got her, she was very sick and we nursed her back to health, but while she was sick she was very cuddly and slept all the time and never really played with anything. After she was better, she became very playful, and if you aren't careful you get pretty scratched and bitten up because she gets so excited. But the past 2 days she has been completely different. She isn't playing as much and she's extremely cuddly. She

Resolved Question: Kidney failure in Pomeranian...?
(Wed, 16 Nov 2011 04:04:47 GMT)
So last Christmas I adopted a Pomeranian from a rescue organization. They save animals from the pound that are about to be put to sleep. They told me that my puppy was in good health, had all his shots, and was 2 years old. Well recently my dog got very sick, out of no where. I had assumed he had gotten bitten by a snake. His back legs became paralized before I got the chance to take him to the vet. Well the vet told me that my pomeranian was 6 or 7 years old. He also said that he had a ki

Resolved Question: Delhezi Bichir is getting fat, problem?
(Mon, 31 Oct 2011 13:43:53 GMT)
I have a delhezi bichir name Bob (short for thingamabob), I've had him for about 8-9 months. When I got him he was about 3" he's now 7 1/2". Since I moved him out of my 67 and into a 125 gallon tank he has been pigging out on everything. He's gotten really fat, I can't really feed him less. I've tried, when I do he just stays by my oscars mouth waiting for food to fall out. Or when I'm feeding my eel he'll take his food, as well as 'accidentally' bite my fingers. His belly bulges out about 1

Voting Question: Vets refuse to put my dog down?
(Thu, 20 Oct 2011 19:50:50 GMT)
If you read my previous question you will see my dog has very many health issues. The vets wants hundreds of dollars worth of testing. I do not have the money to up keep this condition. My dog is aggressive and the spca said he is not adoptable and therefore wont take him. I called 7 vets today, all said "We will not put an animal down that has what we believe to be a treatable condition, its up to the owner to come up with the money be it $50 or $8,000". Basically they are saying this dog i

Resolved Question: Sexual Health with Flea bite like symptomns?

I havent had unprotected sex since May 2011... And all of a sudden 3 days ago got up and discovered a rash on my pubic area that looks like a bad razor burn. Not sore, no smell. I had been letting my pubic hair grow out due to busy lifestyle and my partner being overseas for 5 months... I work 11 hour shifts in a restaurant, and wear synthetic mix pants. But I have always worn different materials with no problem. When I discovered the irritation (which bled a little incidentally), I shaved off

Voting Question: Help..Why Is My Cat Acting Like This?
(Sat, 17 Sep 2011 12:32:04 GMT)
Hi, I foster cats for a charity called Cats Protection, basically we take in animals and look after them until they find a home. At the moment we have a cat who is acting quite aggressive towards us. Just a few minutes ago he jumped up on the kitchen side and grabbed a whole block of cheese, but when we tried to get it off of him he was VERY protective of it and hissed at us, even attacking my mum! I know most cats are quite protective, but this is way over the top. Sometimes if he's sitting o

Resolved Question: Height/weight vs. your horses' size?

I was reading and came across a discussion about the riders size vs. the horses size. This is the post that I came across and would like to know your views: "I find that "size chart" a bunch of hooey. In my experience, anything that's trying to give you mathematically equation to determine things like height and weight are just bogus because they do not take into consideration the outside factors. For example, the "20% of body weight" rule. How on earth does the horses weight determine how

Resolved Question: Have you EVER heard of anything like this, dog may get euthanized for biting a vet tech?
(Fri, 09 Sep 2011 10:09:28 GMT)
I think everyone that works with dogs in a professional capacity understands that at some point they are going to get bitten. Certainly in veterinary practices dogs are under great stress and pain at times and even the most gentle of dogs will bite. Below is story about a Dachshund in Colorado who may face euthanizing because he bit the tech at the Veterinary hospital. Have you ever heard of anything like this? What are your thoughts on this matter? Do you feel this is fair or reasonable?

Voting Question: Why is my nice cat suddenly mean to members of my family?
(Thu, 08 Sep 2011 02:26:36 GMT)
We have had a sweet, affectionate outdoor cat for over a year. She was 4 when we got her and we were told by a vet that she was already fixed, but then she had kittens. Now she and the kittens have been fixed (for real). She started to be nasty to the kittens right after they were weaned and right after she was fixed--going out of her way to attack them, scratching, hissing. We were told that was normal and that mom cats just try to toughen up their kittens by being mean to them. Now the

Voting Question: Is it really better to adopt?
(Sat, 20 Aug 2011 06:24:28 GMT)
I have had three rescue dogs. A Doberman when I was young, and two GSDs now. I guess it is good that you are "saving a life" although anyone else would have adopted our shepherds ( they look cute). But they also come with many risks! The dobe was abused and was pretty messed up due to that. She bit me and due to the liability she presented, my parent put her to sleep. Please don't get mad that we didn't "rehome" her because she also was older with life threatening health issues. We got the

Resolved Question: Why is my 9 year old cat always so angry?
(Fri, 29 Jul 2011 03:41:01 GMT)
Before answering, please take my posting seriously. My cat is a 9 year old female and we adopted her 8 years ago and she has always been angry. She has always been an indoor cat for all these years and she was spayed when we first got her. I know she did have kittens before that. Anyway, she gets mad pretty much over everything like when I pet her, go near her, when she is looking out the window, if she sees any animal in her line of vision or if she smells another animal. When she is angry,

Resolved Question: Los Angeles has become dangerous to dogs. Do you think this new law has gone too far?
(Wed, 27 Jul 2011 16:15:19 GMT)
This new law passed in Los Angeles County this weeks changes the definition of "dangerous dog". It also seems to skirt around our constitutional right of "due process" since there will be no trial, just a hearing by Animal regulation. As we all know Animal control will always stand by their own. There is an appeal process if done within 5 days, but remember lawyers are not free. People have to realize that loosely worded laws are open to the interpretation of the AC officer. A dog lunging at

I've had my rabbit for about a year now after re-homing her from and animal sanctuary where she'd been living for a year. When i got her home, I took time to build her confidence and settle her into her new home, and she's settled in really well, she has never bitten or scratched me and she's not easily scared. Hello. I have a 3 yr old Male Malti-tzu (half maltese/half shih-tzu) and he's the only house dog I've had. He's very active, loving, very protective of myself, as well as my family. For those that don't know about this type of animal, their fur is very long, and hard to manage. Even though he is brushed daily, and has a regular bath every two weeks, his fur still tangles into knots. He has been groomed about 3 times to rid him of his matted fur. Resolved Question: I have a question regarding chocolate poisoning in dogs?
(Wed, 13 Jul 2011 22:47:12 GMT)
I have read many many times on here that even a little bit of chocolate is fatal for dogs. This morning, I came home from a trip to the park with my kids and my St. Bernard mix had taken a bag of chocolate covered bite sized donuts off of the counter and had ripped the bag open and eaten the entire thing. There was at least 2/3 of the dough nuts left in the bag. I was so worried and I rushed him to the animal hospital here in town. They watched him for a while and there was not even the sl

Resolved Question: What can I do about horrible, violent neighbors?

Almost two years ago, my son was walking our dog on her leash. He was near our house coming home when a neighbors dog ( who is always outside alone with no leash) ran up and starting biting my dogs hind leg. My son tried to stop it and the dog bit him. Voting Question: Is a twenty minute walk really enough excersize for a dog?
(Sun, 12 Jun 2011 13:47:40 GMT)
Seriously! And what about the adult dogs that are done romping and bouncing around the yard for play, the older dogs that still enjoy wandering around and sniffing out the neighborhood- wouldn't they get excersize that is more suitable for a dog, as opposed to a human, if they were allowed to run free sometimes? Cats are allowed to run free, and being tiny they are hard for a driver to even see. I don't accept that we are protecting our pets from cars as a sound excuse. And most dogs don't bit

Resolved Question: What is the effects on human and animal health if you set off a flea bomb in your house?
(Wed, 25 May 2011 08:38:00 GMT)
My friend has kids, dogs, and fleas! She doesn't want to flea bomb her house because she is afraid of the dangerous chemicals. I don't blame her, because the flea bombs and treatments are poisons and toxic and can probably cause cancer. But the fleas are biting her even. Not just the dogs. The dogs are on flea treatment now (Frontline Plus) but still there are fleas. I have not seen fleas when I've been there, not even on the dogs, but they do know they have fleas because of the flea bites.

Voting Question: Why has my dog recently become very aggressive towards my other dog?
(Mon, 23 May 2011 19:09:35 GMT)
I have three dogs: Rosie, who is almost 3 years old and a Miniature Yorkshire Terrier, Max, who is almost 2 years old and the same as Rosie, and then we have Guido, who is about 5 or 6 years old who is a Miniature Italian Greyhound. The problem is Guido. We had gotten Guido last out of all the dogs from an Animal Rescue Shelter they found him on the street he was highly abused to the point where his tail looks like the Harry Potter Wand. Resolved Question: Ornery bloodhound puppy help ?
(Thu, 19 May 2011 02:39:37 GMT)
I recently took a bloodhound puppy from a family that was having trouble with her knocking down their baby. I gave no kids so no issues there and she loves my other animals. The trouble is she bites me jumps on me and howls at me constantly and I've tried everything I can think of to stop her. Is thus just normal for her breed to act like this? Besides being very thin the vet said she is in good health. We will have Ger fixed when the time comes. I want to play and be with her she is just a bi

Resolved Question: My 6 year old son just killed our pet cat. Should we be concerned about his mental health?
(Wed, 18 May 2011 22:28:13 GMT)
This isn't the first animal he has killed, but it is his first cat. He stabbed the cat a bunch of times and then bashed his head in with a rolling pin. Is this his terrible twos just a bit late, or some sort of phase, or does he have a serious problem? He has serious anger and behavoral issues, but we thought that it's normal for boys to be aggressive and to bite and kick and strangle other kids and his siblings. Should I start to get worried?

Stuff like that. I've never been able to properly explain to him that he has no sense of empathy and doesn't understand how to express himself properly. He still has the old fashioned views that SN kids are not hum

Resolved Question: Are we actually meant to eat meat?
(Sun, 08 May 2011 01:59:28 GMT)
I’ve been pondering this for a while... We have no big claws for taking-down prey; if we manage to catch-up to something (a lot of things on this earth run faster than humans; even than the fastest ever recorded humans) how would we take it out? How would we tear into it? Why don’t we have bigger & meaner teeth? Shouldn’t we have any ’tools’ required built-in in order to eat? (ie sharper teeth, sharp claws, etc.) Why don’t our jaws have a wider bite, like other carnivores? Why are we dis
