Bacteria are living things that have only one cell. Under a microscope, they look like balls, rods or spirals. They are so small that a line of 1,000 could fit across a pencil eraser. Most bacteria won't hurt you - less than 1 percent makes people sick. Many are helpful. Some bacteria help to digest food, destroy disease-causing cells and give the body needed vitamins. Bacteria are also used in making healthy foods like yogurt and cheese.
But infectious bacteria can make you ill. They reproduce quickly in your body. Many give off chemicals called toxins, which can damage tissue and make you sick. Examples of bacteria that cause infections include Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, and E. coli.
Antibiotics are the usual treatment. When you take antibiotics, follow the directions carefully. Each time you take antibiotics, you increase the chances that bacteria in your body will learn to resist them. Later, you could get or spread an infection that those antibiotics cannot cure.

Open Question: I am bleeding and I am not on my period nor pregnant. Whats happening?
(Mon, 13 Feb 2012 23:55:27 GMT)
I don't know what is going on with my body. I'm almost sixteen, I have never had sex, nor have ever been fingered, eaten out, or such. I do sometimes masturbate with a pillow, but that's about it. But when I did it, I never did it hard enough to hurt so... I'm kind of embarrassed admitting that but if it is something to do with my health, then I figure I might as well tell all the truth. Ever since I was younger, around 10-now, I've always had the kind foul odor down there. I've always been e

Open Question: What will happen to my budgie?
(Sun, 12 Feb 2012 22:55:08 GMT)
My budgie being very curious flew to the dirty cage that used to hold another budgie. The problem is, is that this cage carried a bird with a bacterial infection. I quickly got him off of it and gave him a bath. I am worried that the disease might spread to him and he might die. I already had another budgie die before. Will my budgie be okay? Is there anything I can do to ensure his health? well i brought the budgie into one of my siblings' room and he flew to it. The other bird did not die in

Resolved Question: is this candida or worse?
(Sat, 11 Feb 2012 22:19:38 GMT)
From closely inspecting my tongue I see that I have a slightly white covering that progresses to a slightly thicker consistency near the bridge [or end] of the tongue. I am not sure how long I have had this whiteness of the tongue whether it be from years back or from over a period of months or weeks, because the suggestion of inspecting one’s tongue had never arose to my mind before I had looked at the data on several physical health websites to do with constipation and bowel problems. Resolved Question: Can a healthy adult recover from pneumonia without treatment?
(Fri, 03 Feb 2012 08:00:34 GMT)
To be more specific, although not fully grown, I'm sixteen and in good health. I began getting sick two weeks ago. At first, it seemed to be the flu, but it quickly got worse. I tend to get pneumonia fairly often (two or three times a year), and I'm exhibiting all the usual symptoms (fever, swollen throat, cough with mucus, chills, headache, nausea, etc.). I missed one day of school earlier this week because I was so weak and fever-ridden that I could barely walk, and though those symptoms hav

Voting Question: Future pregnancy risk?
(Mon, 30 Jan 2012 21:48:51 GMT)
I have had one child. There were complications with my pregnancy. I had preclampsia. The only real symptom I showed was MAJOR swelling. My blood pressure was always on the high end of normal. My swelling was so bad that the process of getting my epidural was horrible. When I went into labor, my blood pressure shot up. I had to be on medication for high blood pressure. I also had to be put in ICU overnight after I gave birth to my son so that I could be monitored. Fast forward a bit into the f

Resolved Question: Is this a sexual infection?
(Sat, 31 Dec 2011 21:19:08 GMT)
A few months ago I had unprotected sex with new partner that was a virgin. About a week later had pain down there and slight soreness when I went to toilet. Went to sexual health clinic to get it checked out and the doctor thought it was herpes as she said there were small cuts and ulcers or sores. When the results came back from the swab and blood it wasn't herpes, they said it was either the cold sore virus, thrush or bacterial vaginosis. I can still feel something down there but no pain. Wh

Resolved Question: Is there anything I can for my fish with dropsy?
(Thu, 15 Dec 2011 19:46:33 GMT)
I was told that my fish is a convict cichlid and we just put him into a new tank. In the old tank, he looked fine. Once we moved him into the bigger tank, he started sitting on the bottom and stopped eating. I think he's weakening because he hasn't eaten as he has a tumour on one side and now when he sits on the bottom, he leans to that side. He wasn't doing that before even when we first put him in the tank. (Also, he's had the tumour for about two months and it hasn't affected his health. I

Resolved Question: Worried about having lymphoma or leukemia. ?

To say I've been a little concerned would be a major understatement! My symptoms started about a week ago and I know I'm probably being overly paranoid but I have good reason to. My mom passed from lymphoma. Last week out of no where I had a high fever and I noticed that my lymph nodes were swollen on both sides and my neck was stiff it hurt to move it. I went to the ER and they told me I had some form of strep so they gave me antibiotics. The swelling went down on one side but my right side w

Resolved Question: Are yeast infections, urinary tract infections and antibiotics related?
(Thu, 10 Nov 2011 15:50:30 GMT)
My girlfriend and I disagree on how she should approach getting health care for a recurring yeast infection problem. There was a period of about 3 years, in Iran, where she was treated for a constant urinary tract infection and was treated with a barrage of antibiotics. The problem did not surface for another 3 years or so. Since then, she has become sexually active and has had numerous issues with yeast infections, bacterial infections, pain during sex and nearly continual discomfort. She h

Voting Question: My girlfriend has a suddenly numb vagina. There's been no problems for 7 months and as of yesterday its numb?
(Mon, 10 Oct 2011 22:54:30 GMT)
Quick history - she's in her late teens - had bacterial vaginitias and trichamonas but got that cleared about a month or two ago, had urinary tract infection and she's finishing up the meds on that today. There were no problems until this weekend when she had some time with another girl. The other girl "pinched" her inside her vagina - it hurt a little. Since that point she has had no feeling in her vagina. This has never been an issue before. Did the other girl pinching her cause this?

I have had minor itching in my jock area for nearly a year. It doesn't look like anything. There are no bumps, no scaling, no redness, no visible signs whatsoever. It just itches a little, and if I scratch too much, it does get raw (obviously). I saw a doctor after about 6 months, and he didn't know what it was, as he couldn't see anything.
