Breast feeding offers many benefits to your baby. Breast milk contains the right balance of nutrients to help your infant grow into a strong and healthy toddler. Some of the nutrients in breast milk also help protect your infant against some common childhood illnesses and infections. It may also help your health. Certain types of cancer may occur less often in mothers who have breastfed their babies.
Women who don't have health problems should try to give their babies breast milk for at least the first six months of life. There are some cases when it's better not to breast feed. If you have HIV or active tuberculosis, you should not breast feed because you could give the infection to your baby. Certain medicines, illegal drugs, and alcohol can also pass through the breast milk and cause harm to your baby.

Voting Question: Law and order viewers, doesn't it seem like Law and order is against most libral groups?
(Fri, 03 Feb 2012 01:18:35 GMT)
I mean they have episodes that seem to be against breast feeding, healthfood nuts and envoronmentalists. I understand there are extremes in all groups and beliefs, but they just seem one sided. For example, they had this episode where this mom starved her babies and they seemed to blame it on breast feeding advocates acting like they are a hippy cult. I am not a mother, but unless milk is dried out, if breast milk is avaialbe, I have heard sucking in a natural reflex, plus it seems breast feed

Voting Question: I'm worried I'm on a downward spiral after supplementing my breastfed baby with formula?
(Tue, 31 Jan 2012 19:06:00 GMT)
My Health Visitor suggested I start supplementing with a few ounces of formula per day as my baby had only put on 3oz in 2 weeks. He was 8lb at birth and is now 10lb 13oz at 14 weeks. I went back the next week and he'd put on 3oz which she said was good but not enough. I also had to pump when I could, focussing on the left side as I was having problems with the supply and flow on that side. I have 2 other children and found it increibly hard to feed every 2 hrs (as they suggested) as well as s

Resolved Question: Do missed periods protect against breast cancer?
(Wed, 18 Jan 2012 23:20:25 GMT)
I know there's a link between pregnancy / breast feeding and lower rates of breast cancer, because being pregnant and breast feeding stop the menstrual cycle, and the hormones from that cycle can, over time, contribute to breast cancer. So I wondered, if a woman missed a significant amount of periods through anorexia or being athletic, would this protect her too? I know anorexia has its own serious health problems, but if a woman missed, for example, 30 periods due to anorexia (or athleticism

Since she left the hospital. At birth she weighed 8.1 and when we left the hospital she was 7.9 but at her first appointment she was 7.14. Voting Question: Breast feeding and pumping?
(Thu, 12 Jan 2012 19:51:52 GMT)
My little guy is only 5 days old. He has recently stopped taking my breast. My nipples are quite flat and he can't get latched on properly. He tries and tries but can't get it and ends up getting himself all worked up and frustrated over it. So, I would like to start pumping and feeding him from the bottle (which he takes no problem). I pump every time he is sleeping so I always have plenty available for him. When I mentioned this to my public health nurse she seemed very upset at the fa

Resolved Question: Is it SAFE for me to get a industrial bar (ear peircing) while pregnant?
(Thu, 12 Jan 2012 05:33:32 GMT)
I've had different piercing(s) before and all healed. Very well I might add, but I've been wanting to re-open my monroe and I want to get an industrial. But I'm currently 7 MONTHS PREGNANT and I don't want to do anything to jeopardize my little baby girls health. And reason for me asking is because I'm also going to breast feed so I figure if its not safe now then it wouldn't be safe then, and I really am hoping I get some direct answers!

I am three months pregnant and I'm thinking about whether to breast or bottle feed when the baby comes. There are so many arguments for and against. I've also heard that breast feeding is painful but then it's better for my baby and I should put my baby's health first. Im just wondering what people's views are on this.

Resolved Question: Why do breastfedeing moms harp on bottle feeding mothers?

I was looking for support because I chose to give up breastfeeding because it was taking up too much time with my oldest son (2 years old and wanting attention) and I got the "well why'd you spread you legs?" "Well it takes longer to make a bottle." "Well breast is best and you're sacrificing your babies health for your convienence." I've seen other moth

Resolved Question: Do you believe that breast feeding prevents infections and other problems in children later in life?
(Thu, 05 Jan 2012 18:40:11 GMT)
I think so. My brother was breast fed and he has no problems whereas I wasn't breast fed at all and I have everything wrong with me. Skin problems left right and centre with infections, dry skin, diseases. I have knee problems for no reason and other things. The rest of my family I'm pretty sure was breast fed and they're fine. My niece wasn't breast fed and she's like me with many health problems. Coincidence or do you think everyone should breast feed for this reason?

Resolved Question: My baby will be one week old tomorrow and I very much wish to breastfeed...?

However, due to a difficult childbirth experience she wasn't able to drink from my breast right away, and the nurses fed her formula from a bottle. She is in perfect health (scored a 9 on the Apgar), but never had an opportunity to latch on properly. When I pump only a small spot of liquid comes from my breast. I'm assuming my milk hasn't come in, and at this point probably won't. I pump every time she bottle feeds in the hopes my breasts will start working. She WILL suckle if I use a nipple s

http://www.wusa9.com/news/article/181647/283/Breast-Feeding-Mom-Target-Employees-Harassed-Me Ok, my little rant. If every doctor, hospital and health organization is going to promote breastfeeding (though they don't do as good of job with education), we have to allow women to nurse anywhere their babies are allowed to be. Babies eat frequently. Around the clock as newborns. Nursing is damn hard and while I don't begrudge women in the least to "selfishly" supplement or even replace with th
