What is Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery?
If you have coronary artery disease (CAD), the arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the heart muscle become hardened and narrowed. If lifestyle changes and medicines don't help, your doctor may recommend coronary artery bypass surgery.
The surgery uses a piece of a vein from the leg or artery from the chest or wrist. The surgeon attaches this to the coronary artery above and below the narrowed area or blockage. This allows blood to bypass the blockage. Some people need more than one bypass.
You may need bypass surgery for various reasons. Another procedure for CAD, angioplasty, may not have widened the artery enough. In some cases, the angioplasty tube can't reach the blockage.
A bypass also can close again. This happens in more than 10 percent of bypass surgeries, usually after 10 or more years.

Resolved Question: three bypass surgeries? what is the severity?

My grandma had a heart attack this weekend and has to get three bypass surgeries because 3 of her 7 coronary arteries are completely blocked. I am not really familiar with medical terms but i know what all of this means i just don't really know how serious it is. And i know bypass surgery is a big deal so is it a really big deal that she's getting 3 done? She is 81 and has been in good health her whole life i am just really worried. Any insight? Thanks a bunch in advance.

he has become depressed about the risks associated with angina,,. and he postponed the operation due to fear of the risks associated with it. also he said he didnt feel able to cope with the lengthy recovery period after the op. also i think he is becoming afraid of death/disability associated with advancing age. i don't know what to advise him or how to support him in this., apart from to "be there" for him. but sometimes i feel he wants me to help him make a decision on whether or not to go

Resolved Question: What tests are there to diagnose coronary artery blockage?

My mom who is 65 had a thallium stress test recently and the doctor stated he wanted a more conclusive test, since he thinks there may be blockage in 2 of the artery's. He recommended what he called a 10 minute procedure involving a catheter, from what i have been reading is called a Angiogram.
My mother is really reluctant, when it comes to anything sounding like heart surgery as my father also passed due to complications when he had his bypass surgery.

A recent study of health service costs for coronary angioplasty versus coronary artery bypass surgery at a London hospital (The Lancet, October 1, 1994, page 929) showed an average cost of 6176 pounds with a standard deviation of 329 pounds for 231 angioplasties and an average cost of 8164 pounds with a standard deviation of 264 pounds for 221 bypass surgeries. Is this sufficient evidence to say that the average cost of angioplasty is less than the average cost of bypass surgery?

Sorry I put this in the wrong category ….so I’ll try one more time….. My brother will be having this procedure this coming Tuesday…if any of you guys know of someone or has experience this yourself…can you please tell me…..just how serious this is and what will happen to his health after its done….the doctors gave some information but it was mostly statistics….I kind of one to know from individuals who lived with it …thanks for taking the time to reply
