Ear infections are the most common illnesses in babies and young children. Most often, the infection affects the middle ear and is called otitis media. The tubes inside the ears become clogged with fluid and mucus. This can affect hearing, because sound cannot get through all that fluid.
If your child does not yet talk, you need to look for signs of an infection:
- Tugging at ears
- Crying more than usual
- Ear drainage
- Trouble sleeping
- Balance difficulties
- Hearing problems
Often, ear infections go away on their own, but your health care provider may recommend pain relievers. Severe infections and infections in young babies may require antibiotics. Children who get frequent infections may need surgery to place small tubes inside their ears. The tubes relieve pressure in the ears so that the child can hear again.

Voting Question: Why am I sick EVERY day off?
(Wed, 08 Feb 2012 02:52:08 GMT)
First a little background information: I used to never get sick, except for once or twice a year when I came down with the cold or flu. Then a few years ago, I developed an allergy specific to the dust in my old workplace, which had me having ear infections almost constantly, but that got better as soon as I left that job. Then, I moved to the UK from the US back in August 2010 and had a very difficult pregnancy which had me house and bed bound for 7 months. My mental health suffered from

(Tue, 07 Feb 2012 23:25:57 GMT)
In December I had 3 ear infections, but I didn't go to a doctor, I just waited 5-7 days and the pain/swelling went away. Now I have another ear infection. I can't go to a doctor right now because I moved and am between provincial health cards. My new health card hasn't come in the mail yet. Am I getting infections because they weren't treated?

Voting Question: What can I do to cure my pitbulls itching/allergies? She is constantly itching her face and behind her ears?
(Mon, 06 Feb 2012 01:16:04 GMT)
Rajah, my pit bull, is a little over a year old and I have been dealing with this skin issue since we first got her. We have been feeding her Blue Buffalo Basics the Turkey and Potato formula, as well as giving her 2 benadryl tablets in the morning and 2 at night. I've tried using claritin 24hr 10mg but it seems like she itches less when I give her the benadryl twice a day. But just by doing these two things alone has helped a tremendous amount but I can't seem to find anything that will help

My boyfriend has a double ear infection plus the flu. Sad thing is he doesn't have health insurance, so the medicine he needs he'll have to gather up money for. Resolved Question: Just how bad does my ear infection sound?
(Wed, 01 Feb 2012 05:22:03 GMT)
I woke up after being sick with the Upper Respiratory infection (cold). My right ear was getting little to no decibels of sound. It was like having all the sound going to my right ear. I cant hear much, I would say 50% of my hearing is gone. If I lay on my right shoulder after awhile a yellowish liquid comes out a little and at first I thought it was wax and I attempted to clean out my ears the the ear drops but my parents said "If it is an ear infection ear drops will make it worse". I have a doctor's appointment for Friday, but I'd like to get some opinions before then.Anyway,in mid-December,I began worrying about my heart. Now,I'm a hypochondriac-not yet diagnosed except by myself-and eventually these worries somehow led me into the habit of almost incessantly picking at my ribs, especially my left ones but also my right ones.Well, today I noticed a bruise around the center of my left chest. The bruise LOOKS normal,as far as I can tell, but since I know heart problems can caus

Resolved Question: getting a tattoo with a compromised immune system?
(Sat, 28 Jan 2012 08:15:43 GMT)
I have a blood disorder that makes me immune system very weak. I take medicine every day to ensure that my health stays on the up and up. If I take my meds consistently, I hardly get sick. But if I slack, I get skin/ear infections. My question is, do you think getting a tattoo will be okay? I'd hate to get this full-blown huge tattoo and then have some crazy infection develop.

Voting Question: HELP! What could have fallen out of my ear?
(Mon, 23 Jan 2012 20:38:02 GMT)
Today I was walking along at work when I felt and saw something fall from my right ear. I wasn't sure if I imagined this so I went to look if it was on the floor and it was true. It was a big reddish dark brown ball of wax or dried blood or both! It was the size and shape of an earbud cover that fits into the ear. (Not the round kind of ear bud). It was hard but I was able to pull it apart when I went into the bathroom because I was freaking out that maybe there was a bug in it (nope, no bug)

Voting Question: Guinea Pig Help Please!!!?
(Wed, 18 Jan 2012 05:36:42 GMT)
Please help my little Guinea Pig...Long story short, I noticed white flaky ears that I tried to treat with fungal cream (after some research) but within a few days her one ear looked full of gunk and is now deaf. She does not tilt her head and appeared normal other then the ear. Her ear was in so much pain that the vet had to sedate her in order to examine and clean. There was no sign of mites but we treated for that anyways. She received a shot of the ivermectin and was given antibiotics...a

So I've been experiencing some annoying problems for a while. I think it was mostly me making them worse then they really are by stressing out about them, but here goes. I've been kind of dizzy randomly, haven't noticed any particular trigger, except maybe when i'm playing video games or looking far away. Resolved Question: my ear temperature is very different on each side what's going on?
(Sat, 14 Jan 2012 10:08:11 GMT)
Ok first off, I haven't had health insurance for about a year and in that time I have had several ear infections. I currently have one and now have insurance. I just want to ask if anyone knows or has a general idea of what's going on before I go to a dr. and pay the $45 copay then the medication fee. I KNOW it's a ear infection I've had them enough but I my temperature is about 96 in one ear and in the infected ear it's been getting up around 104.6 f I feel fine other than a little ear pain.

I first jogged 1/4 of a block, walked 1/4, ran 1/4, walked 1/4, and sprinted 2/4. I'm out of shape really badly an was huffing and puffing and my side and chest hurt. Also my ears felt like they were about to burst- I wasn't wearing a hat, stupid little me. :( (if it makes any difference I'm not overweight...) I went into my hous

Resolved Question: Possible ear infection, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
(Wed, 11 Jan 2012 18:54:27 GMT)
I don't have health insurance, and my right ear feels strange. The last time I went to my college's health center, I got anti-biotics for my ear infection. Thing is, my appointment for my college's health center is NEXT TUESDAY afternoon. By that time, I can go deaf! Is this a serious issue? Can I just buy anti-biotics over-the-counter? I can see my local doctor, but I don't really have $50 for consolation PLUS expenses for medicine. I'm desperate.

Resolved Question: Will they finally take my tonsils out?

I haven't been on insurance for a few years now. However, since I'm a college student, I wasn't completely denied medical coverage, as I usually just went to our campus health center. In the past 5-6 years, I've had roughly 3-6 throat problems per year, usually revolving around severe tonsil pain. Of the times I actually went to the doctor, it always ended up being either strep or tonsillitis. A couple years ago, a curious thing began to happen. I would get sick and stay sick for months. I am

I have an abscessed tooth (#30) and cannot afford to have it pulled until February. The dentist said he'd only prescribe me one week of antibiotics. I used the last of it today and have a whole month to go before I can have it surgically extracted (it has had two root canals so requires an oral surgeon to pull it) I just know the infection will come back again and spread into my ear like it did a week ago. Is there a natural antibiotic I can get online or at the health-food store? If I cannot

Resolved Question: Question about ear infections?
(Wed, 21 Dec 2011 00:24:04 GMT)
So, two weeks ago I had an ear infection in my right ear that cleared up after taking antibiotics. It left a hole in my ear and still can't completely hear properly from my right ear because of it. Does anyone of you know if the hole heals up by itself? I had an ear infection when I was little too (in both ears) and the holes in my ears healed up. Resolved Question: Is Exposure to Breastmilk just as Important as Exclusive Breastfeeding?

My son was born prematurely, and he would not latch, so I have been expressing all of his milk. Resolved Question: Is Marbofloxacin/Clotrimazole Ear Drops Ok for Kittens?

My kitten has ringworm. It's all around her head. The fungal/yeast infection is also inside her ears. The vet gave me oral itraconazole liquid for her to take with her food, and clotrimazole cream to rub on her head, but he didn't give me anything to put on the inside of her ears. The inside of her ears look really disgusting, clearly a yeast/fungal infection, but I read online that you should NOT put clotrimazole cream in a cat's ears. Hi, So today finished a 2 hour workout session and I was listening to music using earbuds. When I took them out, I realized that I couldn't hear too well in one ear.
