A hernia occurs when part of an internal organ bulges through a weak area of muscle. Most hernias occur in the abdomen. There are several types of hernias, including
- Inguinal, the most common type, is in the groin
- Umbilical, around the belly button
- Incisional, through a scar
- Hiatal, a small opening in the diaphragm that allows the upper part of the stomach to move up into the chest.
- Congenital diaphragmatic, a birth defect that needs surgery
Hernias are common. They can affect men, women and children. A combination of muscle weakness and straining, such as with heavy lifting, might contribute. Some people are born with weak abdominal muscles and may be more likely to get a hernia.
The usual treatment for a hernia is surgery to repair the opening in the muscle wall. Untreated hernias can cause pain and health problems.

Jeez, my problems never stop. I just almost got fine with my other health problems and now this. Yesterday I went lifting with a friend of mine and today when I went to shower I saw that the left part of my abdomen is sticking out. I immediately thought it might be a hernia and pressed on it, but it didn't hurt. It isn't swollen anymore, but I'm freaking out. I have had 3 surgeries!!! 3 GOD DAMN SURGERIES and I am 14 years old. My life is so miserable.

Resolved Question: Can my old appendicitis operation cause a hernia?

I've been to 3 doctors in the past (about 5 years ago). I got 3 different theories. One Dr. didn't have a clue, the other said that it was caused by the scar/operation I had when I was 13 years old (appendicitis). And the last one had this theory about how since I was overweight my whole life from 12 to 31 that my stomach muscle lining had stretched so far that (though I had lost 100 pounds) that it was still weak and compromised. Before surgery my pup had no known health problems and was a very happy playful guy. The day after surgery we noticed a lot of swelling so I immediately brought him back to vet to be checked. She agreed that yes he was quite swollen and a little red so gave me instructions for orally giving him aspirin
