Every year, many lives are lost because of the spread of infections in hospitals. Health care workers can take steps to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. These steps are part of infection control.
Proper hand washing is the most effective way to prevent the spread of infections in hospitals. If you are a patient, don't be afraid to remind friends, family and health care providers to wash their hands before getting close to you.
Other steps health care workers can take include
- Covering coughs and sneezes
- Staying up-to-date with immunizations
- Using gloves, masks and protective clothing
- Making tissues and hand cleaners available
- Following hospital guidelines when dealing with blood or contaminated items

Open Question: Wondering if my Mom's end is near?
(Mon, 13 Feb 2012 20:34:34 GMT)
I posted a little while ago asking about my mom. She's a longtime diabetic and has had Multiple Myeloma for close to 8 years now. Just after the new year she was hospitalized with pneumonia. We were told to be on standby for her to pass, amazingly, she recovered only days later to be told a diabetic infection in her leg was out of control and would require amputation. She had her right leg cut off above the knee. At this time, I traveled to her fearing she wouldn't survive the surgery or h

Open Question: I am 30y/o diagnosed with COPD? Should I consider getting tested for Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency?
(Sat, 11 Feb 2012 20:08:35 GMT)
I am 30 years old. I have been having shortness of breath and difficulty with mild/moderate activity, since I had the bird flu a couple of winters ago. That flu did permanent damage to the lungs of everyone I know that caught it. Examples: Male 32 endurance athlete had a significant reduction in his athletic performance. Super morbidly obese women in her early 50’s now can barely walk across the house (she had already been short of breath considering her weight and other health problems, but I

Open Question: Is anal intercourse dangerous or damaging?
(Sat, 11 Feb 2012 02:40:31 GMT)
Several individuals regardless or gender or sexual orientation enjoy some form of anal intercourse or stimulation. I am curious about the health risks of the action beyond the same as regular intercourse (meaning STD's). It is my understanding that if done with protection or kept relatively clean the risk of any infection would be drastically reduced but I've heard horror stories of rectal failure and damage causing permanent loss of bowel control and stuff like that. Is that truly the case or

Resolved Question: Is the VA indicative of the quality of care we would receive under govt sponsored healtcare?
(Thu, 02 Feb 2012 08:06:03 GMT)
My 56 yo brother is a disabled veteran. He has had gross pain for the last year in both the upper abdomen and hip area. He has been awfully sick on top of it - vomiting, unable to eat, he lost 50 pounds in the last 3 months. He has been to the doctor regularly - almost weekly - and been hospitalized a number of times in the last year and a half at the VA. When he was in the hospital they gave him enough meds to keep him somewhat comfortable. When they sent him home, he was subjected to

Resolved Question: How do I ask my mom about going to the gynecologist?
(Mon, 30 Jan 2012 22:48:02 GMT)
Okay, I'm really shy talking to my mom about these things. I started my cycle 2-3 years ago. Since then I've worried about things that all girls probably worry about. Looks, smell, and such. Anyways for the past month or so I've noticed that I've gotten a lot more discharge, and it smells a lot more strongly than it did before. I'm worried I might have a yeast infection, but I don't know how to tell my mom. I'm also worried because I've been getting more sexual with my boyfriend and it's emb

Voting Question: dr left gauze in me after childbirth with vacuum extraction 15 months ago. What can I do?

I had my daughter 15 months ago. During labor she was vaccum extracted. This caused me to tear and require stitches. A week or so after birth I was still feeling extreme vaginal and abdominal pain causing me to have difficulty in every move I made. I also had a aweful foul odor which being this was my first child I was expecting this to be normal. I called dr two or three times for pain meds because I thought the pain was normal also. Resolved Question: On watson pharma low ogestrel, should I switch or wait it out.?
(Mon, 02 Jan 2012 23:51:04 GMT)
3 months ago the health department put me on watson pharma low ogestrel birth control. I was previously on the Nuva Ring (which I loved), but had problems with during sex. Since I started low ogestrel I have bled for three months strait. I get one week off (right after my period) then I bleed again. I have to wear a pad, liners are too wimpy for this kind of break through bleeding. Everytime it starts out light pink then grows heavy and dark brown. It's kind of thick. Then ever since I have

Resolved Question: Is there a legal resource to charge gays with with murder/reckless endangerment for spreading HIV/AIDS?
(Wed, 28 Dec 2011 23:54:46 GMT)
Data from the Centers for Disease Control: http://www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/newsroom/docs/fastfacts-msm-final508comp.pdf The data is conclusive, outside of sub-Sahara Africa, the gay male community continues to spread the disease at dramatically higher rates than the general population. The politically correct response to the epidemic has not been effective. Certain people who endanger public health belong in Jail. San Francisco specifically has an HIV infection rate that is highly problematic and

Open Question: Should I stay on birth control?
(Wed, 21 Dec 2011 00:30:36 GMT)
I started Loestrin in August just for birth control reasons. My boyfriend and I have sex and I noticed that since starting the pill, I'm not as wet or as excited. I seem to be more volatile as far as moods go. I have also been battling a terrible yeast infection which comes back after every period. My doctor told me that the birth control was probably causing the infections because of the hormonal changes, but that it will balance out. I went through a period that lasted over a month and that

Resolved Question: More Canadian teenagers testing positive for HIV! thank you Jesus!?

Overall, the number of people testing positive for HIV in Saskatchewan is stabilizing, but health officials are noticing a disturbing increase in the number of teenagers who are contracting the disease. What's more, the teens are not developing HIV from the more common source — intravenous drug use. Instead, they are contracting it from unprotected sex. "These individuals that we're talking about are 14-, 15-, 16-year-olds," said Nicole White, executive director of AIDS Saskatoon. "It's some

Resolved Question: Is Marbofloxacin/Clotrimazole Ear Drops Ok for Kittens?
(Tue, 13 Dec 2011 19:35:48 GMT)
My kitten has ringworm. It's all around her head. The fungal/yeast infection is also inside her ears. The vet gave me oral itraconazole liquid for her to take with her food, and clotrimazole cream to rub on her head, but he didn't give me anything to put on the inside of her ears. The inside of her ears look really disgusting, clearly a yeast/fungal infection, but I read online that you should NOT put clotrimazole cream in a cat's ears. I found an ear drop medicine in my local pet shop that

Resolved Question: Clinically depressed and failing college. What do I tell my parents?
(Thu, 08 Dec 2011 02:30:07 GMT)
I'm in my senior year in college and I have not really been myself this entire semester. I used to be at the top of my class, on Dean's list, loved my major, and was extremely involved on campus. I'll have to admit that I've always been somewhat of a procrastinator, but I was always able to get my work finished on time and done well. Last year, I had failed a class for the first time in my life. It wasn't entirely my fault, but I still could've avoided it. My parents were furious but I learne

Voting Question: Implications of having no immune system?
(Wed, 30 Nov 2011 05:19:39 GMT)
Besides the obvious: rampant infection. I'm wondering more about internal implications of having no immune system. I've read that it is vital for precluding and controlling the growth of tumors, that kinda thing - so, I'm not exploring health complications from infection by an external agent, but from the absence of the functions the immune system serves internally. I'm working on researching this myself, but wouldn't mind input from someone who might know more about this than I do. Examples

On and off I have been having yellow or sometimes brown-ish watery like discharge. This has been going on for about three months now. It first started after I lost my virginity and I went to get it checked out and they treated me for BV. Then it didn't go away but they treated me for a yeast infection. Now this discharge is still there and I've gone in three times and been checked for BV/yeast and tested for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. It's none of these?! I don't have health insurance so I've

Resolved Question: Possible kidney complications?
(Thu, 17 Nov 2011 03:13:06 GMT)
I need opinions from either doctors or people who have gone through similar troubles. A few years ago, a duplicated system caused Sirius infections, causing myself to become extremely sick and nearly, um, go 'beyond the veil' XD. I had an operation to remove what I believe was a majority of the kidney. Post-surgery years went quite well, and gradually the ultrasounds showed a fully healthy kidney. I was shortly dismissed from further checkups. Lately, for about the past three years or so,

Voting Question: why were the antibiotics not effective in controlling sandra's condition?

Sandra is a sophomore at Bay State University. About a year ago, she began having constant fatigue. She would nap during her breaks between classes but still felt tired. She figured that her busy schedule was wearing her out. She was taking five classes, holding down a work-study job, and playing on the school tennis team. She then developed a persistent itchiness over her entire body 3 months after the exhaustion began, and she often woke up sweating at night. Shortly afterwards, Sandra

She's only 15 years old. She comes from a tough homelife (her dad lives in Russia and hasnt seen her in 8 years. and her mom has cancer :( the kind that doesnt have a cure so all the doctors can do is give her antidepressants). her mom doesnt work because of the illness.(her grandparents pay for most things) BTW she goes to a really strict private school. anyways she's been doing drugs (started just with booze and weed) since she was like 12 years old. Like a year ago shes been doing a lot o
