Metabolism is the process your body uses to get or make energy from the food you eat. Food is made up of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Chemicals in your digestive system break the food parts down into sugars and acids, your body's fuel. Your body can use this fuel right away, or it can store the energy in your body tissues, such as your liver, muscles and body fat.
A metabolic disorder occurs when abnormal chemical reactions in your body disrupt this process. When this happens, you might have too much of some substances or too little of other ones that you need to stay healthy.
You can develop a metabolic disorder when some organs, such as your liver or pancreas, become diseased or do not function normally. Diabetes is an example.

Resolved Question: Smokers pay taxes on cigarettes to subsidize their health problems. Should we do the same for the obese?

Obesity increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, metabolic disorders, reproductive disorders, thyroid condition, and a host of other problems. Over 85% of all hospital visits are complicated by obesity. The CDC estimates that 70% of Americans over age 20 are either overweight or obese (a technical distinction). Resolved Question: How can I make my chubby rabbit exercise instead of being lazy?
(Tue, 27 Sep 2011 22:55:10 GMT)
One of my rabbits, a neutered 4-5 year old mini rex, has recently become pretty sedentary which has made him become a bit hefty. As adorable as it is that he loves to snuggle up on the couch with me and watch tv, I need him to exercise so he doesn't develop any health problems. His diet hasn't changed, except for the fact that I took away his daily apple slice (or other fruit treat) when I noticed the weight gain. He still only gets 1/2 cups of pellets and always has access to hay (of course).

Voting Question: Trying to gain weight and muscle?
(Tue, 13 Sep 2011 22:33:50 GMT)
I have a rare metabolic disorder known as Galactosemia. I'll sum it up, but if you want the whole story, I welcome you to google it. Galactosemia prohibits me from intaking milk or milk products. Much like lactose intolerant, except it's a more strict diet, and I can't lose it or grow out of it. I've been real tall and skinny my whole life, and it's endangering my health (normal BMI is the target for everyone; below normal can be just as bad as obesity - I'm 6'3" 148 lbs). Nutrition and

Resolved Question: Any physicians on here who could explain a metabolic question?
(Sat, 04 Jun 2011 22:55:03 GMT)
This has interested me for a long time, but I can find no studies that directly explain what I want to know. I was a purging anorexic for almost a decade. VERY serious eating disorder. I was horrifically emaciated. I really wouldn't eat unless I could purge, and when I did eat I would binge. I ate huge amounts of sugar in a short period of time, which would cause a huge dumping of insulin, correct? After I would purge, I would often faint and have to eat something, anything, even an apple wit

Resolved Question: If the FDA, CDC, and health organizations like AAP say to not give kids under 2 cow milk, why not people older?
(Wed, 23 Mar 2011 15:21:25 GMT)
Too? If cow milk can cause iron deficiency, maldigestion and malabsorption, leading to malnutrition, and orher metabolic disorders, why can't it do it for not adolescents too? Cow milk is a big contributed to the nation's #1 killer: heart disease. There are numerous studies about milk. What is particularly interesting is, in SEVERAL of these studies it has been found that populations which consume more dairy products have consistently higher rates of bone disease. Wait, wasn't milk supposed

Resolved Question: Should obese individuals be denied healthcare under reform unless enrolled in an exercise and diet program?
(Tue, 13 Apr 2010 04:29:11 GMT)
So according to research.. "Medical Problems - Less than 2 percent of all cases of obesity can be traced to a metabolic disorder, such as low thyroid function or hormonal imbalances." That means the 98% of the obese in this country have no excuses other then they eat more then they should and are too lazy to exercise to stay in shape. So, us as taxpayers are basically paying extra because these people refuse to take care of themselves. We will have to foot the bill when they are hospitalize
