A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder. It is a strong, irrational fear of something that poses little or no actual danger. There are many specific phobias. Acrophobia is a fear of heights. You may be able to ski the world's tallest mountains but be unable to go above the 5th floor of an office building. Agoraphobia is a fear of public places, and claustrophobia is a fear of closed-in places. If you become anxious and extremely self-conscious in everyday social situations, you could have a social phobia. Other common phobias involve tunnels, highway driving, water, flying, animals and blood.
People with phobias try to avoid what they are afraid of. If they cannot, they may experience
- Panic and fear
- Rapid heartbeat
- Shortness of breath
- Trembling
- A strong desire to get away
Treatment helps most people with phobias. Options include medicines, therapy or both.

Resolved Question: I have to get over my fear of blood tests. How?
(Thu, 09 Feb 2012 16:42:21 GMT)
Enough is enough. After 25 years of being teriffied of needles I MUST conquer this! It is a real phobia of mine, and unfortunately I have to have blood tests fairly frequently due to several health problems. Today I was so anxious that they couldn't get blood from my veins, not enough for a full sample anyway. Two different nurses tried, they ended up sticking me four times in two arms. Blood actually spurted out of one at the end (the one that actually gave them a bit). I have had blood ta

Resolved Question: Atheists, why do so many atheists act like radical Christians when the truth about homos is mentioned?
(Sat, 04 Feb 2012 17:34:46 GMT)
Even though I'm an atheist, i'm starting to see that something is wrong with many atheists because for some reason, they HATE for anyone to mention the truth about gays..if not, they are most definetely BIAS against any information that puts gays in a negative light regardless of how truth it is 1. Study shows 20% of gay and bi men are infected with hiv source CDC 2. Study shows homos are disproportionately more likely to suffer from mental disorders even in the most pro gay nation on earth

Voting Question: Is it worth it? I need help...?
(Sat, 04 Feb 2012 12:15:55 GMT)
Currently I'm studying fashion design; I'm in the end of my 2nd year and would be going into my 3rd year in a few months. I have to meet deadlines every few days and often sacrificed my sleep just to meet these deadlines. This has took a toll in my mental and physical health; I think I am going through depression and due to the lack of sleep, I have had fever, and it got so bad I had arthritis. It is very demoralizing, especially when I am hit with idea blocks and I have mini panic attacks wh

Resolved Question: Small painless lump on inside of mouth?
(Tue, 31 Jan 2012 17:44:00 GMT)
I am 15, I don't smoke and I don't drink. However, I have this lump, about the size of an average mouth ulcer. About 5 weeks ago I got like 4 - 5 of these small pin-head mouth ulcers on my lower lip. I then got like this small burning sensation on the roof of my mouth a week later, the same place where my "night teeth holder" (after braces, looks a bit like a gum shield) meats the roof of the mouth. it lasted about 3 days. But now, this? It looks like a small zit, its red with a dim white dot

I'm dyslexic - my memory and concentration are terrible, and i've always been a bit of a black sheep - i've had a never ending stream of conflict in my life with people, mental health issues long term (social phobia, anxiety, depression, nervous breakdown) and people who know me always seem to say 'i dont know anybody else like you mate'. so, could it be that i'm a bit special and all this relates to my dyslexia?

Resolved Question: Does my 15 year old suffer from psychosis?
(Mon, 23 Jan 2012 16:04:49 GMT)
So recently, my 15 year old daughter has been acting differently. We're open about everything - I like to think we're friends. We treat each other that way, at least. We have a stable relationship. Only, recently, my daughter told me one night that she was hearing voices in her head after having shut and locked all the doors and windows in our house, turned most of the lights off, shut all the curtains and told me we had to pretend we weren't home. Even before that I'd noticed a change in her;

I will do my best to keep it simple (no-one wants to read an essay) I have mental health difficulties and this means i'm regularly unable to leave my home due to me having acute social phobia, I also have a child with severe autism so again walks are not the easiest thing to achieve, due to child not coping very well when we are out. We would like a dog for companionship for me but it needs to be able to keep up with a lively 9 year old. Does such a dog exist? I will be home everyday with the

Resolved Question: Why did God make me so pathetic?
(Wed, 11 Jan 2012 19:21:58 GMT)
My earliest years were really shaky as my mum was an alcoholic and my parents divorced when I was 1/2. I was in foster care for a couple of years then mum died and my dad took us in, then he neglected and hit us. My aunt took me in and I felt relatively normal. I did OK and got into a decent school. But as a child I always took myself and life far too seriously. I'm not sure if that is just the way I am or if it was a survival mechanism. As I went through secondary school (11+) I didn't really

Resolved Question: What IS intelligence?
(Fri, 06 Jan 2012 12:50:49 GMT)
I believe that true intelligence will always be impossible to measure. IQ tests measure only a person's processing ability and problem-solving skills, which is a limited measure of overall intelligence. A person may be slightly slower than another, but that doesn't mean that if he focuses his energies he cannot achieve more than the person who is considered to be smarter. IQ is like a processor inside of a computer... our brains run at different speeds but can perform the same tasks given time

Voting Question: Having trouble with anxiety?

The reason I am going to explain this stuff and ask the question over the internet is because I do not wish to pay the money to see a psychologist or doctor and get help that way. My motivation for posting this is because of the stage in my life and the psychology class I am taking is helping me understand more about myself. Resolved Question: My mental health and my cruel mother...what to do next?
(Fri, 23 Dec 2011 00:11:19 GMT)
So, right now I'm feeling pretty low. Around 6 months ago, my mum said: "I wish I hadn't had kids!". Last week I had gone home to visit her and in a rant, she said she still feels the same now. My family history is rather difficult. My parents split up around 8 years ago and since then my mum has treated me pretty badly. Thankfully, now I am uni so I don't spend much time living with her. I am generally an un-confident person and I also have a mental health condition called social phobia.

I never thought I would have to resort to yahoo answers for this, but this is basically what is going on. You don't have to read all of it, but I seriously need any sort of help. Everything was pretty much fine a few years ago, but problems kept piling up, and I've lost control of my life. First of all, my mental health has gone from fine to terrible in the past few years. In high school, I self-diagnosed myself with depression, and I had no one to talk to and no help with anything. Last summe

I mostly sticked to this but I have this phobia of granulated food, because you never know what is inside and you have to stick with what your dog wants to eat or not (this one eats like a blizzard but that doesn't mean he should eat everything) I take good care of my
