Psychotic disorders are severe mental disorders that cause abnormal thinking and perceptions. People with psychoses lose touch with reality. Two of the main symptoms are delusions and hallucinations. Delusions are false beliefs, such as thinking that someone is plotting against you or that the TV is sending you secret messages. Hallucinations are false perceptions, such as hearing, seeing or feeling something that is not there. Schizophrenia is one type of psychotic disorder.
Treatment for psychotic disorders varies by disorder. It might involve drugs to control symptoms, and talk therapy. Hospitalization is an option for serious cases where a person might be dangerous to himself or others.

Open Question: Not guilty due to mental disability?
(Fri, 10 Feb 2012 21:40:56 GMT)
It seems many people are not familiar with this concept. This does not include people who happen to have a disability, yet know right from wrong. This includes people who may be having a delusional/psychotic episode and are not in touch with reality. For example, someone with schizophrenia starts having delusions that the garbage cans are actually space ships with aliens coming to kidnap them. They start screaming at the garbage can and go through motions to protect themselves...doing a rit

Resolved Question: Threatening to get social services called?

My family comes from a long line of mental illness. My mom is agoraphobic, and schizophrenic amongst other manic disorders. I also have 7 aunts and an uncle, all whom have their own problems as well. I am 27 now, but I remember growing up my mom and aunts threatening to call social services when they would become upset or have a falling out, as a way to 'punish' or get revenge. As when they were on good terms, they would never call. I remember our home being investigated several times as a chi

Resolved Question: I feel depressed and angry and feel manipilated..?
(Tue, 27 Sep 2011 14:35:49 GMT)
The reason of this depression and anger is because of the feeling that I've been abused by the medical industry. I believe now that in some sort of way I must have got intoxicated or something. Be it by a vaccine, be it something else, the only thing I strongly believe in is that it is caused by something outside of my own doing. The thing is when I was very young I always had to throw up and my heart was racing and extreme anxiety, also a lot of stomach aches I kept complaining about, but fo

Resolved Question: Am I schizophrenic, schizoaffective, schizoid, schizotypal or just odd?
(Mon, 08 Aug 2011 20:34:21 GMT)
I'm a guy of almost 16 years of age. I told my therapist the other day about my mental health problems. I often get a feeling not unlike bugs crawling up and over my shoulder, I see dark obscure figures running away to hide and I hear talking and whispers, though I usually can't tell what they are saying. I am always being watched and traced--I don't know why--but the obscure figures are their spies. I do not know what they want. I also have an enormous fear of being locked up in a mental hosp

Resolved Question: Can spending excessive time alone cause psychotic-like symptoms, even if you're asocial?
(Fri, 24 Jun 2011 01:38:47 GMT)
I have the schizoid personality disorder, so I'm naturally asocial. I spend a lot of time alone in my room. I barely have a social life. I almost never leave the house, especially now that I'm on summer break. Lately I've been getting strange thoughts, and seeing strange things. They're psychotic symptoms and they've made my life a little frustrating. I don't think that spending time alone has caused these symptoms though because I choose to live like this and I feel happy living like this.

I'm having a hard time atm trying to figure out what's "normal" and what's "not normal" about me and my mental health. I've been under CAMHS microscope for a while now and atm I a have very low self esteem, I hate being me. Resolved Question: is there ANY possible way of me seeing a psychologist without parents knowing?
(Sat, 28 May 2011 05:46:30 GMT)
I have really bad social anxiety and I'm mildly depressed most of the time. I have always thought about getting help but my parents are very closed minded about the whole situation and say that I don't need it because I'm not "crazy" as though having some type of mental disorder means I'm psychotic. Trust me, I tried explaining to them why I needed help and what I need it for but they simply don't understand. Something happened today that just threw the anxiety over the edge though. And I real

Voting Question: Could I have Bipolar Disorder?
(Wed, 18 May 2011 04:58:43 GMT)
I'm not looking for a diagnosis, just some opinions. Well, My family has a history of bipolar disorder. Mostly men, and all of them have psychotic features, which I don't have. But I do tend to go through these episodes of highs and lows. The depression lasts longer than this "high" or "elated" feeling. (I don't want to necessarily call it mania at this point.) It started about three or four years ago in high school. I started having these ups and downs that are not quite fitting to just teena

Resolved Question: Amygdala - does this a potentially go some way towards explaining a few things?
(Wed, 11 May 2011 08:30:33 GMT)
I was looking up psychopathic disorder, because I was interested in the parallels with views and behaviours which seem prevalent amongst people involved in work in the mental health field. In passing I found this as an explanation of cause of a "psychopathic disorder". "The amygdala is crucial for stimulus-reinforcement learning and responding to emotional expressions, particularly fearful expressions that, as reinforcers, are important initiators of stimulus-reinforcement learning." It's

Resolved Question: why do pot heads say Pot is good?
(Sat, 01 Jan 2011 08:37:29 GMT)
Marijuana and Mental Health A number of studies have shown an association between chronic marijuana use and increased rates of anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. Some of these studies have shown age at first use to be an important risk factor, where early use is a marker of increased vulnerability to later problems. However, at this time, it is not clear whether marijuana use causes mental problems, exacerbates them, or reflects an attempt to self-medicate symptoms already in existence.

I have a serious disability. I have schizoaffective disorder. It's difficult ,because it was hard to put me on another kind of med because ALL the meds in the class of medicine that I am required to take ALL pose a diabetes risk.

(Thu, 23 Dec 2010 16:00:58 GMT)
