Rabies is a deadly animal disease caused by a virus. It can happen in wild animals, including raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes, or in dogs, cats or farm animals. People get it from the bite of an infected animal.
In people, symptoms of rabies include fever, headache and fatigue, then confusion, hallucinations and paralysis. Once the symptoms begin, the disease is usually fatal. A series of shots can prevent rabies in people exposed to the virus. You need to get them right away. If an animal bites you, wash the wound well; then get medical care.
To help prevent rabies
- Vaccinate your pet. Rabies vaccines are available for dogs, cats and farm animals
- Don't let pets roam
- Don't approach stray animals. Animals with rabies might be aggressive and vicious, or tired and weak

Voting Question: Found a stray kitten...worried for her health.?
(Thu, 09 Feb 2012 17:20:19 GMT)
I found a stray kitten that followed me home. I don't know if it had a owner before or not. But she was really clean and friendly. But for the first day it didn't go to the bathroom. Next day when I bought a litter box it automatically stepped in and peed. It continued to use the litter box on it's own without ever being taught by me. She also likes to be pet and follows me around and purrs a lot. Are these signs that she had an owner before? I wanna know because I'm worried for her FELV testi

Voting Question: Cat, 3 yrs old, stiff back legs and afraid to go to vet. 'sways' her hips to walk. Unsure if this is normal?
(Wed, 08 Feb 2012 02:19:31 GMT)
My female cat, Rini, is almost 3 years old. She is a happy cat, if not a little scared of her bigger brother. Plays a little bit. But eats well, her eyes are always alert, and she is relatively a petite cat. I always noticed her hips 'sway' when she walks. I always thought this was adorable, because her tail is straight up and curls at its end (it looks like she is doing a dainty little walk). But lately I've been wondering if something is wrong with this? Her back legs... they seem.. stiff

Voting Question: Can Health Department call & threaten to kill your animal, or else call CPS on you?
(Tue, 07 Feb 2012 16:11:58 GMT)
Our 3 year old daughter put her finger in the bunny cage after a trip, and the hungry bunny bit her finger. first time ever biting anyone. we hold the bunny and feed them by hand and never had fear of them biting, and still do not. Anyway, after a week from the bite incident her cut bled so we decided to have it checked by a doctor in case it needed a stitch or two, & to see if it was infected, as in not clean and such. Well, the next day the County Health Department called us and said they ha

Resolved Question: Cat throwing up after vet visit?
(Sun, 05 Feb 2012 02:40:43 GMT)
I took my cat to the vet last Thursday and she had her rabies shot as well as a clean bill of health. Ever since then she has been acting very abnormally. She seems rather "itchy" and is constantly grooming. She also throws up just about every night around 8 and can't seem to keep any food down 'till the next day when it starts all over again. She's very slight; less than 6lbs and is just generally (naturally petite). Could the rabies shot be causing her problems? I've tried everything to try

Voting Question: What are the causes of pet overpopulation?
(Mon, 23 Jan 2012 02:42:41 GMT)
Okay, I know most people will respond to this question by saying something like: "because of all the irresponsible, morally repugnant MORONS who don't spay/neuter their pets!!!" But think about it, up until the 1960s, NOBODY spayed/neutered their pets. So for all these thousands and thousands of years, cats and dogs were allowed to be as promiscuous and prolific as they pleased, and seemingly no one ever really considered this to be a problem. I'm sure that stray animals (and their offspring)

Resolved Question: My dog with fear aggressive tendency's bit me last Saturday while training, should I get the rabies vaccine?
(Fri, 20 Jan 2012 15:06:58 GMT)
The dog was current on all his vaccines and had not been in contact with wild animals. When he bit me I had three pairs of pants on due to the cold, but no hole or tears were in any of the pants. However, the skin was cut. The dog has since been euthanized for other issues (his fear biting was too much to risk with children around). I went to the doctor on Wednesday because the bruising had increased and they created a bite report. That doctor prescribed an antibiotic. Now because the dog is n

Resolved Question: Is safe to drink tap water and eat vegetables in the US?
(Sat, 14 Jan 2012 16:44:08 GMT)
My company is sending me to a business trip in the US, and I don't know how many vaccinations I need in order to be safe in the US. I am up to date with the French vaccination scheme, but I am still concerned about Rabies, Dengue fever, Malaria and Reston Ebolavirus, you know all those weird diseases. Also I don't know how clean is the water and if is safe to eat vegetables. I also have noticed that the health scheme in the US is quite medieval, so even my company insurance cover all eventual

Resolved Question: Trying to register my APBT as a show dog in San Francisco, but...?

I asked this already, but i really would love more people to answer this... I am trying to gather information as a responsible APBT owner living in SF. Our dog is has Purple Ribbon lineage with the UKC. He is still a puppy (7 months), and we are training him to be entered into shows, with the possibility of eventually studding him. He is completely vaccinated (rabies too), and micro-chipped. I have been doing research on applying for the Breed/Show Permit Exemption, but i think i have come to

I was browsing the internet and came arcoss the website, itsfortheanimals.com. I was really just gathering info for my dogs upcoming vet visits, well I came across this, Vaccines - Are They Safe for Your Dog? by Dee Blanco, DVM, a holistic veterinarian. Voting Question: 13 year old cat and vet help/advice?
(Sun, 25 Dec 2011 21:16:11 GMT)
She has never been to the vet. When she was a kitten she got vaccinated for rabies and a couple shots to protect her from illness. After that she lived outside for three or four years and then became an inside cat again. She sleeps and lives in one room and only ventures out at night. (We have a dog that she doesnt like) Shes seemingly very healthy, except her back legs make a clicking sound when she walks. I want to know if I should get her to the vet or if I should just stand there and w

Resolved Question: My cat is continuously attacking me?
(Wed, 21 Dec 2011 20:35:54 GMT)
Okay, so unlike all the other Yahoo! questions about attacking cats, my cat has not recently began to scratch and bite me, but rather had been after her first month with me. I've had her for about year now, and she continuously attacks me unless she's in her heat cycle (my dad doesn't want to 'waste' his money spaying a cat) or during times when I've just 'returned' from a period of time away from her, for example when I sleep, and when I wake up or when I go out of town for a short while with

Resolved Question: Can you get Rabies from a handshake?
(Sat, 26 Nov 2011 14:37:26 GMT)
I had a meeting with someone who has just come back from Russia in the last few hours, where there is a lot of Rabies. As I have dry hands with cracked skin and some cuts, I was wondering if it is possible to catch rabies from him if he had a rabies bite or rabies saliva on his hands. I do get a bit paranoid around everything regarding health so your answers will be helpful to give me some reassurance.

Resolved Question: Is it normal for a dog to vomit after receiving a rabies vaccine?
(Fri, 18 Nov 2011 01:11:45 GMT)
We got our 6 month old Golden Retriever his rabies shot and a health check from a mobile vet. The mobile vet comes through our rural community sometimes and we had gotten all of the puppy's other shots from the same vet. On our way home he vomited in the car. I know it wasn't just car sickness because he rides in the car all of the time and has never gotten sick on a car ride before. So, is it normal for some dogs to vomit after getting a rabies vaccine? Other than vomiting once and being abno

Resolved Question: Cat's third eye showing while in heat?
(Wed, 02 Nov 2011 19:17:51 GMT)
This is not my cat, but my fiance's. I am urging him to sign her up to get her fixed ASAP. Anyway, onto the concern. We just noticed today, that the cat's third eyelid was showing in both eyes. She's an indoor only cat. She is under a year old. This is her third or fourth heat, but I believe third. Is there any reason her third eyelids are showing? Is it just because she's in heat? I know heat isn't good for a cat's health, and I was thinking that may be the problem. She has her shots, but she

Resolved Question: Cat Scratch and then? (afraid of rabies-disease)?
(Mon, 31 Oct 2011 22:57:44 GMT)
Hello guys, I know there are so many questions and answers about it but my question is little different. On my street, there is a cat which I see it very often. Today, it scratched me from my hand and the cut was filled with blood but it did not bleed. I am afraid of having infected '' bacteria or rabies'' from the scratch. 2 hours later, my body is not quite well, I feel terrible. I mean, I have an ache in my right back of my head which worries me a lot. Also, started to remove gas from my b

Voting Question: Worried about having male dog neutered?

I have an appointment in about 6 hours to get my 2 year old male Black Lab neutered. Everyone has been suggesting to get him neutered, so I made the appointment a few days ago at a local Orphans of the Storm (Pet h

Voting Question: Does your pet have to be in quarantine-Orders to Japan?
(Tue, 25 Oct 2011 12:39:22 GMT)
My husband got web orders today. We will be moving to japan next year. I keep getting conflicting stories. I've heard you have to quarantine your dog at a vet for 6 months. I've also heard you could quarantine your dog from home as long as you guarantee your dog hasn't been outside. I've also heard as long as your dog has a health wellness check up and rabies shots they don't need to be quarantined at all. Anyone know the process? The vet on base where we are currently stationed doesn't answer

Resolved Question: Is it ok for a dog-bitten person not to get his shots until he knows (within 2 weeks) the dog is sick?
(Sat, 22 Oct 2011 05:35:56 GMT)
I've been bitten by a dog a long time ago, got my 2 shots from the doc and I was advised to observe the dog's behavior and health status for 2 weeks if I wanted to skip my 3rd (final) shot. So when I found out that the dog that bit me was alive and well, I skipped the final shot. I was bitten by a dog again yesterday and anti-rabies shots are so expensive here and I don't have the money, so I'm wondering if it's ok to observe the dog first and if his condition is still normal after 2 weeks, wi

Resolved Question: Bitten by an outside cat?
(Fri, 21 Oct 2011 23:27:03 GMT)
I was holding a cat, and taking it out of the street because a car was coming, and it was rolling around in the street. Keep notice that this is NOT my cat. I have two cats inside, and I don't like outside cats, and there should be something against it. This cat in particular is my neighbor's cat, and they let it roam around the streets. Well, it's a ragdoll, so it doesn't really give a crap about anything. I was taking it out of the street so the car could pass by, when it turned around, and

Resolved Question: Help with a possible rabid cat? ?
(Wed, 19 Oct 2011 22:06:18 GMT)
My younger brother was attacked by a stray cat. He insists it didn't bite him and that he only got scratched. We called the health department and they told us to get a trap and trap the cat and observe it for 10 days, and that if it had rabies it would be sick or dead by then. We caught the cat and I'm wondering if we should do anything else. Also I don't know what to do with the cat if it is fine. Our local humane society won't accept any more strays and we already have a catch and we don't

Resolved Question: Possibility of a lawsuit after dog bite.?

A little background before the question: I was walking my two dogs (A Beagle and A Chocolate Labrador) when three dogs ran out of their fenced in yard due to the gate being left open. The smaller dog pinned my Beagle down by the scruff while my Lab and his larger dog tussled. While attempting to free my pinned down dog, his Boxer mix bit me several times (neck, back, legs, arm, and butt). Resolved Question: This town needs dog care education; How can I help spread it?
(Sat, 10 Sep 2011 03:01:38 GMT)
I go to school/spend most of my time in a tiny town of less than 300 in population. A lot of people have dogs. Leash laws do not exist (but there has never been a problem) and nor does any sort of dog licensing system, and there is no vet. The ranchers' dogs are usually well cared for and up to date on vaccines, but not the average townsperson. I live in an actually smaller town that has less that 100 people, but people here seem to me more educated about dog health/care/etc. Sure there aren't

I've had her for about 2 months now. She's about 3-4 months old. She was a stray. She checked out at the vet's with a good health bill and I'm going to take her to get her rabies shot soon. I noticed her nose is always dry. She doesn't lick it at all. She's acting fine and energetic so I'm pretty sure she's not sick. Is there a way to teach her to lick her nose more often? Last week, my eight year old 120+ pound GSD mix was rushed to the emergency vets because she had a seizure and was yowling in extreme pain. They got us in right away and sent in a technician to give her a pain medication/sedative to help relax her, and told us it would take about twenty minutes to fully set in. During her seizure, she fell and broke one of her teeth. We informed the nurse of this, she was fully aware that she had a open, painful nerve in her mouth. The nurse asked if she bit,

Resolved Question: My 5 month old puppy has Demodex mites?
(Fri, 02 Sep 2011 23:58:09 GMT)
I think my 5 month old puppy has demodex mites (red mange/puppy mange). She needs to go to the vet to get diagnosed for sure, but I've noticed a bald spot growing inbetween her eyes and around her eyes, it seems the hair is thinning. I've looked this up online, and all sites point to localized demodex. It seems there is little treatment available for this (so long as it doesn't become generalized) because the mites are common on all dogs (although they rarely cause a reaction) and that 90

Voting Question: Is my vet at fault? Please help!?
(Tue, 30 Aug 2011 01:05:26 GMT)
So both my dogs are raised without vaccines (natural rearing). Rabies is NOT required here. I have found as a dog owner there are many autoimmune and other reactions that can be caused by vaccination. I've had two cats get vaccine associated sarcomas and a dog get epilespy. Anyway. I brought my pup in to get neutered today at 9 months and had to fill out a questionnaire on my dog's health- one of the questions was vaccines. I ticked 'never' for rabies, DHPP, Lyme, Leptospirosis, Bordatella. W

Resolved Question: What should I do with my kittens?
(Mon, 29 Aug 2011 21:45:54 GMT)
I got one from a humane society with first set of vaccine (FVRCP) and FeLV/FIV test at 8 weeks of age. But I just realized he needed booster shots every 3 weeks until he is 15 weeks old. He has been kept indoor with other kitten that was given to me since they found him as a stray. This stray kitten ha no health check nor shots. Both are about the same age going on 12 weeks. Both of them now are sneezing and having some eye discharge. I was just going to give my kitten from the humane Societ

Resolved Question: what do I do with this situation.. I have two kittens?

I got one from humane society, all shots, neuter, Microchip and health check is done all for $15. He is now just about going on 12 weeks and will get his first shot of rabies. Resolved Question: If I was dog bit on July 20, and the dog did not have rabies shots, can I have rabies, dog is alive today?
(Tue, 23 Aug 2011 00:01:39 GMT)
I went to the Dr. on Aug, 5th, he said since the dog is alive and he could find nothing wrong with me, I shouldn't have rabies, but take the dog to my Vet, and it checked out. The vet said the dog does not have rabies, and neither do I, since it had been 20 something days since the dog bite you and the dog is in great health, do not worry. by the way neither the Dr. or vet could see any bite marks on my leg.

(Mon, 22 Aug 2011 05:10:23 GMT)
I have a 2.5 year old male akita. He has flea allergies, so he's reduced to wearing a cone until we have them gone due to chewing himself, and a grade one luxating patella in his right knee (injury, not genetics as he had had his patellas cleared at 1.5 years of age, vet confirms) However, he had also dropped down to 78lbs from 100lbs. We had this vet appointment with the new vet (due to moving) last Monday, in which he had his exam, 3 year rabies, heartworm test, and deworming. The vet sim
