Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria. It infects the genital area, lips, mouth, or anus of both men and women. You usually get syphilis from sexual contact with someone who has it. It can also pass from mother to baby during pregnancy.
The early stage of syphilis usually causes a single, small, painless sore. Sometimes it causes swelling in nearby lymph nodes. If you do not treat it, syphilis usually causes a non-itchy skin rash, often on your hands and feet. Many people do not notice symptoms for years. Symptoms can go away and come back.
The sores caused by syphilis make it easier to get or give someone HIV during sex. If you are pregnant, syphilis can cause birth defects, or you could lose your baby. In rare cases, syphilis causes serious health problems and even death.
Syphilis is easy to cure with antibiotics if you catch it early. Correct usage of latex condoms greatly reduces, but does not completely eliminate, the risk of catching or spreading syphilis.

Voting Question: Would like some ideas for how to proceed for treatment, any ideas?
(Tue, 17 Jan 2012 21:45:22 GMT)
Hey, to start off with a little information about myself, I'm 20 years old and currently reside in the Netherlands. I moved here about 6 months ago from the United States. It's important to note, that I very rarely drink, and I hadn't been drinking at all around the time the tests were done. Nor had I been using illicit drugs, smoking, etc. I've had chronic pains for almost as long as I can remember. Although chronic pain has definitely made me less active than I should be, I am not obese.

Resolved Question: Is this lump a sign of syphilis?
(Wed, 04 Jan 2012 20:49:34 GMT)
I have a lump on my penis that has lasted around 2 weeks, but is starting to go away now. Frightened, I researched it online and since it's painless, I think it may be a chancre, which is a sign of syphilis. I have never had any kid of sex before, nor have I came into genital contact with anyone. I'm only 15 and I'm learning about this in health and this lump matches the symptom. I really don't want to tell my parents about this if I don't need to, but I may go ask my health teacher. If it is

Resolved Question: I believe I have an STD, does someone know what it is?
(Sun, 18 Dec 2011 12:57:45 GMT)
A little under two months ago, I noticed red scaly patches appear around my elbows on both arms. I thought nothing of it, and attributed it to eczema. (They are still around in exactly the same form) About two weeks ago I noticed a small red spot begin to grow on my penis, and ignored it due to my hope that it was a mere skin condition that will go away, and now it does appear to be gradually receding. I nevertheless looked it up, and it sounded close to a primary stage of Syphilis. Only a few

Resolved Question: What should I do? Should I sue the doctor?
(Wed, 14 Dec 2011 23:45:01 GMT)
In March of this year I was raped. I went to the doctor to get STD blood work done. I was verbally told by the doctor that my lab came back clean. Last Friday I got a call from a health department stating that the test I took 8 MONTHS AGO tested positive for Syphilis. I explained that the lab work had come back clean that day (including the work that was sent off) and that there was no way I could have it. He recommended I go get another test done. I did and sure enough it came back positive.

Resolved Question: What are my chances of having a STD?
(Fri, 09 Dec 2011 04:40:36 GMT)
Ok its been two months since I've had unprotected sex with a girl and it was a one night stand. I didnt ejaculate in her, but two weeks after this encounter my testicles started to ache real bad. It got to the point where it was real painful and I notice I had 4 knots and I massaged my testicle region for awhile and the pain started going away. One week later the tip of my penis started to become very sensitive. It did not hurt at all. It was just sensitive to the touch. It would get irritated

Voting Question: Comments on sexual health screening (Service wise)?
(Mon, 05 Dec 2011 12:38:48 GMT)
So I just got back from a gum clinic in the UK. Can't say I'm content with the service.. I was expecting a full screening/examination but walked out 10minutes later having just gave blood & urine to test for Hiv, Syphilis, Chlamydia & Gonorrhea.. No swabs or visual inspection took place more importantly why only test for FOUR infections out off countless 1000's ?. no hepatitis, HPV, just Four ? What did they test you for & was you happy with the service ?

To try and cut a long story short, i had unprotected oral and full sex with two different girls more than ten years ago now. They were both sexually active i think. I was using cannabis at this time in my life and suffered a psychotic episode and i suppose a kind of amnesia a few months after these sexual encounters. But now i'm wondering and dreading wether this was caused by syphilis and not the dope. I don't remember having the other symptoms of the disease. The thing is when i was sectione

My right big toenail hasn't looked too healthy for the past couple of months. First of all I noticed ridges in the nail, then a dry whiteness overcasting the nail and when I just took my nail varnish off my toes the bottom corner is green, and looking down from the top of the nail it has come away from the nail bed. Resolved Question: Can Chlamydia and Gonorrhea be detected in a blood or urine sample?
(Tue, 18 Oct 2011 16:35:52 GMT)
Reason I am asking.....I went for my semi annual STD check up. Normally when I go down the Dept. of Health they draw blood for HIV and Syphilis and a pelvic exam for everything else. Well this time, only a blood and urine was taken and they sent my on my merry way. I don't have any signs or symptoms but I know sometimes STD's don't have any signs. I just like to be extra cautious. I was thinking about making an appointment to my ob/gyn just to be on the safe side.

United Healthcare came back denying payment because "testing was not medically justified," i.e. they have no notes that I was displaying symptoms that would warrant this testing. For my own peace of mind, I recently submitted bloodwork for a myriad of STDs--HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis C, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2). Everything came back negative (non-reactive). At first I was relieved, until I heard about how tricky the herpes virus is. For those who don't know, white people can be very evil. In the past, (maybe in the future) White health officials used human beings as test dummies. For 40 years, they used Black men in Alabama to test for syphilis. They purposely infected these men with the infection, to test how the disease ravages the human body. They infected over 399, lying to them saying they are being treated for bad blood. The men, 100 men died from syhilis related illnesses, and 28 died from the disease alone, 40 wi
