What is Syringomyelia?
Syringomyelia is a rare disorder that causes a cyst to form in your spinal cord. This cyst, called a syrinx, gets bigger and longer over time, destroying part of the spinal cord. Damage to the spinal cord from the syrinx can cause symptoms such as
- Pain and weakness in the back, shoulders, arms or legs
- Headaches
- Inability to feel hot or cold
Symptoms vary according to the size and location of the syrinx. They often begin in adulthood.
Syringomyelia usually results from a skull abnormality called a Chiari I malformation. A tumor, meningitis or physical trauma can also cause it. Surgery is the main treatment for the disorder. Some people also need to have the syrinx drained.

Resolved Question: Don't you think that the Kennel Club is a load of crap?
(Sat, 11 Feb 2012 18:15:58 GMT)
I've seen this documentary 'Pedigree Dogs Exposed' and I'm wondering what your opinion is on THIS:
- The Kennel Club allows dogs with extreme health issues to still be shown in the ring and even win first place.
- Half of King Charles Spaniels will suffer from heart murmers by age 5, and many suffer from Syringomyelia which is where the brain is too big for the skull and causes severe pain.
- Many boxers suffer from epilepsy.
I'm not a dog breeder or anything, I'm just a normal person, and I

Resolved Question: Am I smart to buy a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy?
(Thu, 05 Jan 2012 13:38:05 GMT)
My family are buying a puppy soon. We have briefly looked at some dogs, and we have all agreed that our favourite is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
We hadn't looked into the dog in detail, but I did tonight and I found loads of articles on 'Heart Mitral Valve Disease (MVD) which is stated that is extremely common in Cavalier puppies, and can lead to heart failure.
It also says other health concerns are Syringomyelia, Hip and knee disorders, and Eye Problems.

Resolved Question: Cavalier King Charles, are they all sick? Please Help?
(Tue, 01 Feb 2011 16:11:10 GMT)
I have been really looking into getting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (I love them sooo much) but all of the information I find states they are prone to many health problems and I am wondering if it is fair to buy one after all. Mainly a really nasty illness called Syringomyelia, I can honestly say after seeing videos on youtube of dogs suffering it is the most appalling illness in an animal you can imagine. It basically means their brain is too big for the skull and every heartbeat causes i

Resolved Question: Why can unhealthy or deformed dogs win shows?
(Sat, 22 May 2010 05:17:46 GMT)
Seeing as show dogs are very commonly used for breeding, I do not understand this. I have seen a Cavalier with syringomyelia win, and a Pekingese that had to sit on an ice pack to even have it's picture taken due to breathing difficulties. The Cavalier went on to sire DOZENS of puppies, although syringomyelia is genetic and horrifically painful. It is when the skull is too small for the brain and it had been described as trying to shove a size 10 foot into a size 6 shoe. I sometimes have to sh

Resolved Question: What makes you think the Government cares about your health?
(Fri, 19 Mar 2010 22:22:40 GMT)
I see in on here evey day that thousands die every year because they don't have insurance, or they got sick and lost their job and insurance.
I thought that was the reason you pay for Social Security. I lost my job and insurance a year ago due to a disk pressing on my spinal cord and Syringomyelia.

Resolved Question: would you be mad and upset with the breeder?
(Mon, 25 May 2009 13:23:58 GMT)
if you found out your cavalier king charles spaniel had syringomyelia and you were never told.. but trusted the breeder 100% because you knew them well and promised good health/no health problems and even seeing the mum/dad dogs.....
oh and syringomyilia is a neurological disorder where the dogs skull is too small too support the brain so it is squished through the back of the skull leaking fluid into the spinal cord....causing he dog to scratch alot particularly one side of the body...causes

Resolved Question: Are there any problems with Cocker spaniels cross Cavalier king charles spaniels?
(Mon, 20 Apr 2009 13:30:30 GMT)
I really want a Cocker spaniels cross Cavalier king charles spaniels but I'm not sure if it has any problems. I've heard that Cavalier king charles spaniels can get Syringomyelia- a condition affecting the brain and spine. I also know that common health issues with Cocker spaniels are bite problems, skin allergies, shyness, cataracts, deafness, aggression towards other dogs, and benign tumours.
So altogether is this hybrid a good breed of dog to get. And can it form any health problems?

(Tue, 10 Feb 2009 04:11:15 GMT)
My friend is handicap (paralyzed from the waste down) and cannot sit down for long periods of time due to back pain. He needs to attend a court hearing. The court told him that if he gets a letter from his doctor, the court hearing could be done at his place or over the phone.
The problem is that his doctor not being a good English writer, asked him to write the letter and he'll sign it.
Here is what we have so far:

Resolved Question: Cavalier King Charles Spaniels? $2000-$3000?
(Sat, 17 Jan 2009 01:11:35 GMT)
I have been looking to buy a Cavalier from a Reputable breeder. But, all of the breeders are selling their puppies for $2,000-$3,000. Most of the puppies come with a 1 year health guarantee, and AKC papers.
Is the price range I listed above about the right price range? I was expecting $1000-$1500, but not $3000.
I only want this puppy to be my pet. I will not be breeding, or showing. PLus, the puppies are sold on a Spay contract.
What do you think--Is $2-3,000 a fair price?
PS: I have cons

Resolved Question: RSPCA BOYCOTTING CRUFTS! - what are people's opinions on this??? ?
(Thu, 18 Sep 2008 13:38:01 GMT)
this was from a guardian article:
The RSPCA is to boycott Crufts because of concerns within the organisation that the show's judging criteria encourages the breeding of "deformed and disabled" dogs. The animal welfare charity, whose patron is the Queen, said the competition promoted breeding methods that were "morally unjustifiable", and announced yesterday that it would no longer hire a stand at the world's biggest dog show, as it has done for the past four years.
The move comes after a BB
