If you spend time outdoors or have pets that go outdoors, you need to beware of ticks. Ticks are small bloodsucking bugs. Many species transmit diseases to animals and people. Some of the diseases you can get from a tick bite are Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia.
Some ticks are so small that they can be difficult to see. Ticks may get on you if you walk through areas where they live, such as tall grass, leaf litter or shrubs.
Tick-borne diseases occur worldwide, including in your own backyard. To help protect yourself and your family, you should
- Use a chemical repellent with DEET, permethrin or picaridin
- Wear light-colored protective clothing
- Tuck pant legs into socks
- Avoid tick-infested areas
- Check yourself, your children and your pets daily for ticks and carefully remove any ticks you find

Resolved Question: Need a hypothesis to test for my experiment/information gathering?
(Fri, 13 Jan 2012 00:14:44 GMT)
I attend a school that's very wasteful: -the toilets are automatic (and flush at any sign of movement) -the cafeteria sells many different, large plastic bottle drinks and canned sodas (which is also extremely unhealthy) -all the food is served in separate, heavy duty, paper containers -other utensils/plates/trays are cleaned under heavy rushes of water -a huge amount of school material is printed, single-sided, on paper. To give a better gauge: each week I come home with a thick folder-ful o

Voting Question: Lyme Disease or just irritation?
(Tue, 18 Oct 2011 02:56:26 GMT)
I found a female adult deer tick in my hair this morning. I pulled it out and made sure the head wasn't still in and cleaned the site with alcohol. I'm really worried because the only reason I found it was because where it bit me was really sore. It's been all day and the site is still red and painful to the touch. Is that normal for tick bites or should I be concerned about Lyme Disease? I know, I know, I should just get checked out but I don't have health insurance at the moment and I'm just

I've been dating a girl for about 7 months now and she is Borderline. We live together, we are in love and we want to build a life together... The question is, Can we? I've been reading about BPD and relationships and it seems that my situation is pretty classic. Things started off like fireworks, the most amazing intense love I've ever felt. She pursued me, won me over and spent the first two months of our relationship adoring me and going above and beyond what a girlfriend should to show me

Resolved Question: could I have lyme disease? Or am I just paranoid?
(Mon, 22 Aug 2011 08:26:50 GMT)
I feel like a total idiot, mostly because I'm asking the internet if I might have Lyme disease... Just saw "Under Our Skin" a documentary on Lyme disease and it got me thinking about some of my recent health problems. Was in a tick infested area about a month and a half ago and picked anywhere between 10-15 ticks off my body. Had several rashes within the month following that I attributed to fleas (my cat had a gnarly flea infestation). We raised welt-like rashes which I thought were from bit

Resolved Question: Bad doctor what should I do?

I have an infected tick bite that I pulled out of me with my fingers over 10 days ago. It has a yellow center and purpleish ring around the outside. I have been feeling ill and before thought it was from a sunburn. But, then the bite hurt and itched and reminded me of it. I peeled part of the crusty scab over the bite off and there was what looked like 2 insect legs in the yellow crust. The border of the bite itself is engorged and red. I started vomiting and had nausea the next day. I had ache

(Wed, 15 Jun 2011 19:46:09 GMT)
Hi, I am an 18 year old girl. I have depression which I'm being treated for but I don't think its related because as far as I remember I have always been like this. I have bad ticks or mental issues. I have to scratch my skin on either side of my hand 3 times when I think about something important and I have bite down on my teeth and I can only stop when it feels right. Sometimes I have to raise my hand in the air out of the blue and the next time I do it, it has to be higher than the first.

Resolved Question: The house next door is foreclosed and the grass is ridiculously high, causing bug problems. What can I do?
(Fri, 27 May 2011 20:55:03 GMT)
I live in rural Pennsylvania and a bank in Colorado owns the house next door. This happens every summer. Last year it was ticks, now its chiggers and they're eating me alive! The house gets reported to the township, they send out a fine and the bank pays it...without hiring someone to cut the grass. I had to go to the doctor today...with no health insurance...because these bites are so bad. They are all over my body, head to toe. I got a shot and sample of pills to keep the itching down. I n

I was outdoors probably around 8 to 12 hours a day for a few years (plenty of ticks have bitten me, though I pulled out the heads almost always cleanly when I had the chance. I only recall one that stuck in my knee and I am not positive if it w

Resolved Question: Jaundice in Horses? Tick born diseases or infections?

Cici has jaundice. She's not running a fever or an irregular respiratory rate. Both of those are perfect. She has gut sounds in all four quadrants and she's had mineral oil and water pumped in to her stomach. Has anyone had a horse with jaundice? What were the treatment options? Right now I'm leaving lights on her and I'm pushing water at her to keep her hydrated. She's also on 3cc's on banamine 2x's a day. We think this is from a tick bite. Resolved Question: Why is my kitten constantly licking, scratching and biting herself?

My six month old spayed, but not de-clawed,female domestic short hair was taken to the vet twice for this. She has no fleas, ticks, ringworms, earmites, etc. The vet gave her a clean bill of health. He prescribed anti-itch medication (chlorpheniramine, 4mg tabs, 1/2 tab every 12 hours). She has been taking them for several weeks, but no help. The vet suggested a possible food allergy, so we have changed her food also. Still no help. Any help from another cat lover out there would be really app

I took azythromicin but the ear infection felt like it didn't go away. I started to feel better but then I got worse again. I went to an ENT and he said I don't have an infection and I should see a chiropractor because it's probably my neck causing ear pain. Oh, and in the end of October I got bitten by a tick. I told

Resolved Question: My puppy has a lump on her belly and an oozing hole close to it. What could it be?

I recently found a litter of puppies out at my father-in-law's house. Most of them seemed to be in good shape except for one. I brought her home hoping I could get her health back up to par. She had fleas and a couple of ticks, but I was able to get rid of them. When I found her, I noticed that she had , what seemed to be, infected flea bites on her belly. I treated them with peroxide and they went away. The past two days I have been noticing some redness and infected bumps on the top part of

She has no apparent bites, scabs, or bugs on her fur. I do realize that 6 weeks is still a bit young to be separated from the mother, but as they were fuzzies, they were not weened properly. I just took them to a well rat check today, and told the vet that I was concerned that the littlest one had an allergy because she has been sneezing and itchi

I found a tick on me 2 weeks ago after hiking with my dogs. I have been watching the area and just tonight I noticed a red circle forming over top of the bite. I will head into the doctor's first thing in the morning and from everything I have read I should be ok since it is caught early. However, I was laid off a few weeks ago and my insurance is up July 1. I am trying to get personal health insurance (rather than use Cobra) for various reasons. I have gotten sick around 6-10 times this year, it's annoying as crap. I do wash my hands, if I don't wash my hands I use germ-x. I just got sick yestarday. My nose is stuffed, my eyes keep watering, and my head hurtd when I decide to lay down. Do you think its from how many masquitoes have bit me? (4 different bites). How can I prevent getting sick

Neither of these

Resolved Question: does a tick need to bite through your skin to give you lyme?
(Sun, 24 May 2009 16:46:51 GMT)
does a tick have to bite all the way through your skin to give you lyme? Basically, my little brother got bit by a deer tick sometime last night. I just pulled it off of him with a pair of tweezers but it came off super easily. It wasn't like the times I've been bitten or when our pets have been bitten where you had to really carefully pull to get its head out of the skin. However, it was clearly starting to bite him and there is a little bit of red irritation in the spot. Is it possible
