Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes ulcers in the lining of the rectum and colon. It is one of a group of diseases called inflammatory bowel disease. Ulcers form where inflammation has killed the cells that usually line the colon.

Ulcerative colitis can happen at any age, but it usually starts between the ages of 15 and 30. It tends to run in families. The most common symptoms are pain in the abdomen and bloody diarrhea. Other symptoms may include anemia, severe tiredness, weight loss, loss of appetite, bleeding from the rectum, sores on the skin and joint pain. Children with the disease may have growth problems.

About half of people with ulcerative colitis have mild symptoms. Several types of drugs can help control ulcerative colitis. Some people have long periods of remission, when they are free of symptoms. In severe cases, doctors must remove the colon.

Resolved Question: what did i create!?!?!?
Link - Mon, 06 May 2013 04:28:24 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Mixing the following produced a cold reaction and a gas. I have mixed the two (in smaller ammounts) in drinking water before as a health thing, not suspecting a reaction. What on earth was I consuming?!?! Apple Cider Vinegar 5% acetic acid C2H4O2 chemical formula CH3CO2H structural formula AND MSM / DMSO2 methylsulfonylmethane CH3SO2CH3 or (CH3)2SO2 C2H6O2S chemical formula Best case senario, the two negate each other; worst case senario, they produce something harmful. Please do the reaction on paper for me (I no longer remember how) so that I know what I consumed. It shouldn't take very long for someone good at chemistry to figure out.

Resolved Question: Helicobacter Pylori causes other health issues?
Link - Sun, 05 May 2013 02:28:33 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Here is my story, hoping someone has experienced something similar or has professional answers to all this. I am a 31 year old mom of four boys. In 2010 I was diagnosed (finally) with H Pylori. I had the symptoms for 15 years and all the other Dr's kept giving me the purple pill, nexium or any other sort of reflux/ulcer meds. I finally eradicated the H Pylori in 2011 (January) after two bouts of prev pac treatments, the Urea test results finally came back negative or so the dr says. I also had a blood test and endoscope biopsy done prior treatments to make sure it was in fact H Pylori. Anyhow I got the symptoms back again a few months ago and a bulb went off in my head oh no the infection is back! I have no idea how I got this back all my family members are negative, my mother is still waiting to be tested herself since she has all the symptoms and has so for 20 years. My mother has been diagnosed with multiple auto immune diseases and we strongly believe it was all caused by H Pylori and are waiting for those results. I have been tested again with a Urea Breath test and I am also waiting for results hopefully by next week. My mother has had liver issues, gallbladder issues, and bad ulcers. And from there her health just progressed and got worse. I was told by one person H Pylori has been linked to many autoimmune diseases not just gestational issues. I do have the classic symptoms, bloating, pains, bathroom problems, chest pains, etc. But I also have new symptoms that are very scary and very similar to MS. If anyone can relate or has answers please do tell I am just lost in all of this and have no clue what to think or believe. These are my symptoms other than the classic stomach issues -anxiety -low magnesium levels (had to have IV at the hospital) -chest pains -swallowing issues heart palpitations/irregular heart beats -joint and muscle pains/weakness -vertigo/dizzy spells as if things are off balance -foggy/forgetfulness/trouble concentrating -fatigue (the other day I had to pull into a parking lot and take a quick nap because the pains on my arms and legs were hurting too bad and I felt a heaviness and was extremely exhausted) This has never happened before I am usually a very strong mother of four boys and capable of doing many things myself. Lately I am unable to do anything Let's not forget bathroom troubles- for the last three days I haven't gone, and have no urge to. But I have an increased urge to pee. This is new. Hope someone has answers. The Dr's are clueless and running one test after another, awaiting the results for the H pylori to see if it returned.

Resolved Question: Moving abroad - healthcare questions?
Link - Tue, 30 Apr 2013 14:35:13 GMT - Email The Author
Description: My boyfriend and I are planning to move somewhere within the EU next year. I am Australia and he is British and has an EU health care card, allowing him free access to medicine within the EU. Every time I try to find out more about the health care systems, my mind gets fuzzy and completely confused. I have Ulcerative Colitis which requires frequent monitoring, and so I need to know that whatever country I move to, I will have proper (and preferably cheap) access to medical help. Any help is greatly appreciated as I'm not sure my brain can continue to handle sifting through all the legal terminology to find out what I actually need to know. Thanks Camille @Politically Correct Thanks for your reply. I know I will require a visa. I'm already living in the UK on a Youth Mobility Visa which ends in December, but as I might not get sponsored so I can stay, we're having to make other arrangements. As Australia and the UK have a reciprocal agreement, I can use this health care system without paying very much. I just need to know which countries are going to be the least amount of hassle and the cheapest should I require medical help.

Voting Question: Ulcerative protitis and medication.?
Link - Mon, 22 Apr 2013 22:58:04 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Hi there, I was diagnosed with ulcerative protitis 6 months ago at age 19. Luckily, I have the milder form of ulcerative colitis. Still, it was devastating to my physical and mental health. I had blood/mucas in my stools, constant diarreah, constipation, terrible cramping, bloating, gas, no appetite, and I dropped 27 pounds. Today, I am doing much better. I've gained my weight back and the symptoms aren't as bad. Here lately I've been seeing more blood in my stool, cramping, and my stool is green. I haven't been taking my medicine like I'm suppose to, due to the fear of long term side affects. I'm afraid I might about to be going through another big flare up, so I've started my medicine again. I'm on .375GMg of Apriso 4 times daily and 1000Mg canasa fecal suppositories, once daily. What are the long-term side affects of these medication and how long will it be before I'm in remission? Also, is there any diets that could be recommended to me. I don't always eat right (a bunch of junk actually), and I get gas really bad. It's embarassing and I would like to ease that. Any help is appreciated, thankyou!

Resolved Question: Yellow stool, abdominal pain...what's the cause?
Link - Mon, 15 Apr 2013 17:15:54 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Eugh so much bad stuff is going on with my health right now it's never ending! I am being investigated for lupus, and now, because I had positive anti-smooth muscle antibodies and slightly raised liver enzymes, I could have liver involvement :/ I don't appear to have jaundice my skin and eyes are normal color. It all got really bad over Christmas. Needing to run to the loo after eating with diarrhea. Acidic stools that were yellowish and stomach pain with tons of gas. It sort of went but was replaced by intense constipation. My stool was round, hard and pellet like and normal color. Now I am suddenly back to the stomach abdominal pain/ache. I have lost half a stone. Not much gas this time. My stool is rather yellow, greasy looking and sloppy. It is also acidic again :/ Does this sound like IBS? Liver problems? I have been tested for celiac it was negative...but I am now ditching wheat for good. Oh and if i didn't already have enough health problems, I also have t1 diabetes. I am 17 years old and female. All help is appreciated.

Resolved Question: Girls and Colostomy Bag?
Link - Sat, 06 Apr 2013 18:35:20 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Please take some time to read my story as I'm facing a very difficult decision in my life right now and need to know some honest opinions. I just got out of the hospital due to a very severe flare up of my ulcerative colitis. And now I will most likely have to have a full removal of my colon and have a permanent colostomy bag. J pouch is not looking like an option because of the severity of my condition. The good news is, I should feel a lot better and be much more healthy if I get it done. The bad news is I'm very concerned how this will effect the future of my love life. I'm currently single, I've been too sick to try to date since the beginning of the year. I'm only 24 years old but I feel like I've only actually lived for 4 years because I have lived an absolutely miserable life and lonely life for my first 20 years. Because of that, I've only had one girl friend in my entire life. She was a pretty class mate of mine who I dated for 2 years, but we are just friends now. After that, I briefly met a very pretty American-Korean girl who was seemed very interested in me, but unfortunately I haven't seen her again. I've also been around girls who seemed very interested in me but I was too shy to ask them out because they were so beautiful and I regret that to this day. And recently, I went on a few dates with an amazingly beautiful international student from Russia before I got sick. I'm still a virgin too because my first girlfriend was very conservative about her sexuality and I was trying to practice chastity myself. But now I fear this decision that I am going to have to make will ruin my chances of ever finding love in my life again. I fear that if I get a permanent ileostomy done, the girls that I am attracted to will be grossed out by the bag or the stoma. I know personality counts a lot, but let's not forget that in most realistic situations, sexual appeal is what gets your personality in the door. Personality is a major concern for me too, but at the same time, I don't feel like I could be happy in a relationship without being with some one I find attractive. At the same time, if I don't get it done, I'll probably get colon cancer and die or bleed to death. The kind of girls that I find attractive are those including, but not limited to, pretty, girly, big eyed, baby faced, innocent mannered, fashion savvy, and brightly colored girls. For example, Maria Magibon, or Selena Gomez. Now I'm not saying I won't find anyone who isn't flawless attractive, just that these qualities are very important to me. But it concerns me that these types of girls are ones who might not be able to stomach ever seeing, feeling, or ever coming close to a guy with a colostomy bag. This is where I seek some honest opinions. Girls, I have to ask, and please be honest, don't worry about being called "shallow" because I understand that there are just some qualities that need to be met for a happy and healthy relationship. Would you date and be willing to have an intimate relationship with a man who is attractive both in physical appearance and personality, but has a permanent colostomy bag as long as it is properly concealed and clean? And for the guys who read this, especially those who have colostomy bags, how has having a colostomy bag effected your love life or dating life? Any answers are very much appreciated. Thank you.

Resolved Question: Can you get married in a Catholic Church without a marriage license?
Link - Tue, 26 Mar 2013 16:10:46 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I am 22 years old and have ulcerative colitis. I have been denied health insurance because of my pre existing medical condition. The only way I can continue to receive coverage is if I stay a dependant of my mother and stay on her health plan until I am 25. This means I cannot get married. My fiancé and I would have gotten married in the fall had it not been for the health insurance deal. We still want to live together and start a family but I need to stay on health insurance because my medication is really expensive so if I have a flare up I am screwed. I am wondering if the Catholic Church will perform the ceremony and marry is in the eyes on God without legally binding us in marriage. After I am able to get my own health insurance (be it through group plan or other investments) we would then go to city hall to make it official. We just want to move in together and whatnot, and I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't move in with anyone until I am married.. Anyone have a similar experience/ advice they can give? Thanks! I live in Canada, and shockingly insurance companies can deny you coverage. If I went to the hospital they couldn't give me the medication for free I need they can give me surgery to remove my colon because in their eyes that is the only cure to colitis. Our system isn't so perfect after all.. I predict that Americans will have better health care than Canadians in 10 yeas. Also, I want to get married in the eyes of God. I am going to keep my last name, keep my address, I am, to the state or government very single I am going to be in no way officially married I know that - I just want to get married in the church so I can start a family without being frowned upon from by family and community.

Resolved Question: HELP PLEASE WITH KNEE PROBLEMS!?
Link - Sun, 17 Mar 2013 02:24:31 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Hi, I have just a small question about knee dislocation that I can't seem to find the answer to anywhere online! As you know, it is March, but 8 months ago, in July [of 2012] I was walking down a hallway and someone called my name. I turned around to see who it was but my foot twisted and the top of my leg locked (WHICH HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE) and my knee just sort of slipped out when the top of my body turned, but the bottom part (my legs) didn't fully turn. I fell sideways onto my shoulder and could feel my knee totally and completely on the side of me leg. (my left knee dislocated outwards to the left side of my leg). Anyway, luckily I the person who called my name was there to call an ambulance to take me to the hospital to have it popped back in, but as you know, it's 8 months later, and it still hurts. My knee is disfigured and doesn't look like it used to-- my right knee is bony and small and my left knee is bulgy and somewhat swollen ALL the time, no joke. I knew this would happen, but really, it's been 8 MONTHS! It hurts after long periods of time walking on it, when I bend it all the way straight, when I crouch down, when I get down on my knees, when I run, when I use the stairs, when I walk backwards, when I do sports, when I cross my legs, or when someone hits it [well, duh.] It cracks EVERY SINGLE TIME I bend it and pain shoots through my leg when it cracks. This is bothering me and I don't know if that's normal because google is failing me D:< Well, you might want to know my question now, haha. Anyway, what I was curious about was what this could lead to. Since July, when it happened, EVERY TIME I bend it at a 180 degree angle [totally straight] for 1 or two seconds, I can hear and feel the bone and cartilage grinding against each other [it is the most horrible noise and feeling I've ever experienced.] It hurts, obviously, when I do that, and I'm not sure why it hurts as much as it does. MY QUESTION, (sorry, I keep getting off track XD) is: can joint dislocation (specifically knee dislocation) lead to arthritis or something of the sort in the future? Or can this lead to more severe problems? More info: I'm 14 years old and I have ulcerative colitis. If you don't know what that is, I have an ulcer in my colon that will not go away. A long term-effect of this disease, if you don't know what it is, is a disease called rickets. This is the softening and sort of deterioration of bones and bone strength, which causes weakness in bones (duh). You can see why I mentioned this-- I have never even broken a bone, stretched a muscle, fractured/sprained anything, I barely get sick. Besides my colitis, I'm perfectly healthy, I don't HAVE rickets, it's just a long term-effect of colitis, so it's a possibility that it's developing and why my knee came out. But seriously, I have no idea, I'm only 14 and don't pay attention in health class XD Anyway, if you need any more information on this to answer my question, (Can this lead to worse problems in the future for me? E.g., arthritis, needed surgery, muscle deterioration, vulnerability of repeated dislocation, etc) I'll just add more in the "Additional Information" part of this. P.S. I really need a serious answer. Don't tell me to go to a doctor or use google or something, I just need to know what this can lead to in the future. @Dog who scratches nose: Thanks. I know I don't want to see a doctor, but that was really good advice. Thanks! I'll make sure to make an appointment[:

Resolved Question: I have 4 canker sores in my mouth -- what could be possible causes?
Link - Tue, 05 Mar 2013 01:59:24 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I have always been prone to canker sores, but I've never in my life had more than 2 at a time. I cut my tongue with a knife on accident and it turned into a very painful ulcer. It has healed significantly in 4 days and 3 new very minor ulcers have appeared. My greatest fear is that I have given my new girlfriend oral 3 times in the past month, though I'm sure all of the 14 year olds will scream HERPES HAHA. So what are OTHER possible causes?

Resolved Question: Anyone care to comment on how to manage a Crohn's Disease flare up?
Link - Mon, 25 Feb 2013 02:57:29 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I don't have Crohn's Disease first. A friend of mine has it pretty bad, been diagnosed and been put on some medication. I was just wondering if anyone know's other ways to manage the pain during a flare up. She said she can only take Tylenol when pain starts, which in my opinion is good for head aches and stuff, but with the way she describes the pain I doubt it helps at all. Obviously, I know a doctor could prescribe her some more effective pain medications. I was just asking if anyone had any tips on some at home techniques that you have heard helps to some degree. Like when you sprain an ankle or something and you put an ice pack on it, something along those lines just to make it a bit more bearable. Seems sometimes you can find little home remedies here and there for different things, just something someone might have found helps them. I have researched it a little bit and it seems that a lot is still largely unknown about Crohn's Disease and the treatment techniques that I have heard from her are semi-effective, which leads me to believe two people can have Crohn's Disease can have flare ups for two different reasons (like one person eat spicy food or one person eat seafood). I think it varies on the degree the triggers and what eases it from person to person. Just my theory, I'm definitely not a doctor or anything just trying to see if I can collect some advice from you all. Thanks in advance. PS. Don't bother replying if your answer is "Tell her to go to her doctor". Obviously she has been going and is having regular medical attention.

Resolved Question: Does anyone know if you can have SLE and parkinsons?
Link - Thu, 07 Feb 2013 11:40:12 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I was a very healthy 22 year old the first time i got really sick. Im now 29 and have spent the past 6 years trying to convince health care professionals that i wasn't a hypochindriac or a pill popper. I was tired ALL the time but over the years it got worse and my energy levels decreased dramatically. I had joint pain that started in my right hand and over the past few years has spread to all my joints. I have severe weakness in my hands and legs. I constantly am black and blue on my legs. I have had (at least what i was told it was) restless leg syndrome that started out only at night 6 years ago and now i get it in my legs, hands, arms, face and head whenever i sit for more then 5-10 minutes. Im constantly in pain and constantly uncomfortable. I moved from pcp to pcp...counselors...psychologists...pain specialists...and so on. It got the the point that i was known by name in the er at three hospitals. Up until about 6 months ago most of my symptoms never overlapping giving the doctors very little reason to do anything more then a quick pee test and maybe a cbc panel. Always showing a high lever count and low iron count but nothing else. I finally started seeing a new pcp who decided to take a long look at my chart and decided to test my for autoimmune diseases. To my surprise i tested positive for sjogren's syndrome, lyme and SLE. Naturally i was scared but was happy to hear that i wasn't insane. Today i saw my pcp after seeing the rhumatologist who confirmed the diagnoses and found that the antibiotics treated the lyme and i no longer test positive for it. However both docs seem to agree with me having yet another disease. This one is parkinsons disease...secondary or what we don't know but i now have to go see a neuro doc to confirm or deny it. I haven't read anything about people having all of these at once in all my reading about the others...so im scared that i have parkinsons on top of everything else...please help...

I have ulcerative colitis(similar to crohns).I've had it for three years and I've always been insecure about the way I look. But I can't stop.I suffer from depression as well. Please don't be horrible to me or judge we all have imperfections, thankyou x

Description: Please help me, I am in America for a year and haven't gotten health insurance yet.. Before I came to America I would have blood in my stool on the toilet tissue and in the bowel, this happened for about a month and then it would only happen every once in a while, I got to America and it now its happening again, is there any thing I can do? I can't go to a doctors yet but, I just want to find out what it is, also there are these times when it feels like everything in that area is cramped up, but even if I stretch it still stays the same, it can get so bad that I can't walk, this never happens for more than about 10 mins though. So please any suggestion what this could be? It's bright red blood, some time just on the toilet roll sometimes in the bowel as well... Thanks

Resolved Question: What could this unknown vomiting problem be?
Link - Thu, 13 Dec 2012 00:03:20 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Here's a bit of background history. I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in April last year and was alright-ish after I started treatment. By which I mean I stopped vomiting. Since December 2011, I've been having these random vomiting episodes. It happened once in December, then once in April 2012, once in July 2012, once in August 2012, twice in September, 3 times in October, 3 times in November and it happened a few days ago. Since April, I've had constant nausea and these vomiting attacks have been getting closer together and it's just like having the D&V virus every time it happens because I also get watery diarrhoea as well. The episode I just had was probably the worst one because I passed out. I've had an MRCP, ultrasound, gastric emptying study, small bowel MRI, flexi sigmoidcoscopy, several gastroscopies and a head MRI. The only things that showed up was an inflammed gallbladder (because I hadn't eaten in ages), a little inflammation in the ileum (backwash ileitis) and gastritis (stomach inflammation) from all the vomiting. Symptoms: Chronic nausea Intermittent vomiting Bloating Diarrhoea Random twinges in abdomen The thing that interests me is that I've never had regular periods so I went on the pill. They're still as heavy as ever, getting increasingly painful, and I have chronic aching/sharp pain that's just permanently there. I don't think it's related though? Now, I've been in hospital a few times and those tests I mentioned above were all done. The thing that really annoyed me was the 3rd time I was admitted I was put on a different ward and had a different doctor. I said to him that I wanted to see a gynaecologist but he wouldn't let me unless I needed surgery that day. Was I wrong to ask to see one? Can these symptoms even be related to anything gynaecological? Thanks for your help. I'd just love some indication to possible causes because I need to get my life back. I can hardly work and I'd just love to earn money to pay my rent to my family and just pay my way like I should. I'm being so irritable to my family it's just breaking them apart. I just want to be normal again. Thanks guys! I am a young female just to add. Thanks for the reply Megan, will definitely give it a look!

Description: Everyday for about the last few months i wake up in the morning with a flat belly but by bedtime my stomach looks ballooned. My stomach doesn't hurt, no constipation just a lot of gas really smelly ones lol. Im 5'10 and 166 pounds, i live a very active lifestyle by going to the gym to lift weights, i also jog a few times a week. I only drink water at least 12 cups a day. I eat very little junk or processed foods, once a week and again very little of it, i also don't consume high amounts of beer or alcohol and i don't smoke. I eat the same things everyday for example oatmeal, brown rice, chicken, fish ,peanuts, egg whites, sweet potatoes, lots of fruits and veggies. I recently decided to read about my symptom's and found out that i might need to switch to a gluten free diet and a low fructose diet and to watch how much sulfur i eat. Any one have the issues please write about them

Resolved Question: Constant diarrhea for the past 2 years?
Link - Tue, 04 Dec 2012 22:04:35 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I'm 18 years old and for the past 2-3 years I've had nothing but diarrhea. I go about two or three times a day and it's a lot. I lose water from it, so I'm usually thirsty. Recently there are white dots that float in my diarrhea. I also have extremely painful gas pains with a lot of gas. I had a colonoscopy last spring and they didn't find anything. I also have tried a dairy-free diet, which had no effect. I don't want to go to the doctor again unless it's absolutely necessary, because our health insurance just got more expensive. What could be wrong with me? How do I make this better?

Description: With all the mental disorders, anyone seems to fit in. So what then? Is everybody more or less mentally ill ? How can you trace the line between healthy people and people actually suffering from mental illness? The whole concept of "mental illness" seems to loose its credibility.. Description: I have ulcerative colitis and have been taking Lialda pills for about 3 months now. I have 9 months supply left. In the past I took certain oral acne medications but those did not work. I am seeing a dermatologist in about 3 weeks, and I was wondering if he would let me take Accutane while still on Lialda. I heard that Accutane could potentially cause Ulcerative Colitis, but if I already have it, do you think there would be a problem?

Resolved Question: What could be wrong with me? Serious answers only?
Link - Wed, 07 Nov 2012 22:06:56 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I'm only a 19 year old female who has been dealing with awful stomach issues... I've been to my GI doctor many times... Only for them to waste my money when they said I have IBS. I had my gallbladder removed in emergency surgery due to a stuck gallstone the size of a golf ball on may 1, 2011... Since then I hadn't been able to hardly eat anything. When I eat as soon as the food hits my stomach or a few minutes after I finish eating I'm rushing to the bathroom with severe diarrhea and it feels like stomach acid... Not to be too gross but it was nothing solid at all more like a yellow liquid and burns horridly... They have put me on some sort of cholesterol medicine and powders that were to act to bind the bile being secreted through my liver. Some of the medicines helped but only for a few weeks... Now they have me on a stomach muscle relaxer for IBS it helped about 3-4 days since I went to the GI last. Now I dread taking it.. It's only making it worse. Before I have an "attack" as I call it my lower stomach burns so bad and within 2-3 minutes I'm running to the bathroom... I've dealt with this almost 9 months... Now I have developed anal bleeding the Er had told me it was due to a small hemorrhoid. But when it starts bleeding I know I can feel it bloating my stomach up cramping it to where I'm forced to go to the bathroom where there's not just a little blood on the toilet paper or in the toilet. There is a lot if it. Almost as If I were on my period... And this bleeding goes for the better part of 2-3 days before I stops and comes back a week or two later.... I can't afford to even go to a walk in clinic I'm between jobs and I'm worried something is really wrong and not just IBS... I've had a colonoscopy where they said I had a precancerous polyp which they removed and was benign ten as symptoms got worse and I thought it was an ulcer they did an endoscopy when nothing was found... I'm over it! I just wanna find out what's wrong with me :( please help I've been tested for celiac sensitivity it came back negative and as well as hypothyroidism which was also came back negative. I'm at a loss

Resolved Question: Is it normal for a pregnancy to cause a bunch of health problems on my body?
Link - Tue, 16 Oct 2012 19:20:04 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Before I got pregnant my only health problem was Ulcerative Colitis, which I had been in remission for over a year since my last flare up. But since getting pregnant 7 months ago, I have developed sciatica - very painful almost constant in my right hip, my ulcerative Colitis has flared up twice so far with this pregnancy and really bad this second time. The pregnancy has also caused me to be anemic (even before my flare ups), I have really low Iron from it. I get morning sickness every day, headaches almost every day, heartburn, can't sleep very well, dizzy and nausea a lot and painful lower back pain. And since the baby is so big, I am now starting to have pain and a burning feeling in my ribs. I know some of these symptoms are normal when pregnant, but I can't take this anymore, I'm almost ALWAYS in pain and uncomfortable. Is this normal? My Doctors do know about all my health problems, all they say is that they will keep watching me closely. And this is my second pregnancy. Throughout my first one all I had was the normal symptoms of headaches, heartburn, dizzy, nausea...but this time it's so much worse!

Resolved Question: Is it bad that I encourage my roommate to smoke cigarettes with me?
Link - Tue, 16 Oct 2012 06:07:38 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I'm not pressuring her to start smoking. She actually started smoking in high school, but only when drinking. I didn't start smoking until college. Now we live together, I smoke about 3 packs a day and she loves to smoke cigarettes, but only sometimes. She will smoke anything. She smokes weed about 2 or 3 times a week and she smokes a cigar once in a blue moon. When she's out drinking she'll always have a cigarette or two, and recently she's been smoking Black & Mild's when out drinking. But when we have dinner together, after dinner I need a smoke and I always get her to smoke with me because I don't want to alone. She's not always happy about that, but she will smoke with me anyway. If we're out drinking together, alone she'll have 1 or 2 cigarettes, but I end up getting her to smoke 5 with me. If we spend a whole day together I can probably get her to smoke 3 or 4, and she gets mad at me for making her smoke more than she wants to. I'll always get her to join me outside, but she says she won't smoke, and then I hand her a cigarette and she does. Am I a bad friend that I make her to smoke with me more often than she wants to? She would still only be smoking when drinking if it wasn't for me. I feel guilty, but it's always nice to have someone to smoke with.

Voting Question: How do I go about returning to school after recovering from an illness?
Link - Mon, 08 Oct 2012 23:13:20 GMT - Email The Author
Description: A little less than three years ago my health started to sharply decline , and after a lot of (really dumb on my part) stalling, I finally went to get checked out. Turns out I had a pretty bad case of ulcerative colitis and arthritis. Two years later I am currently 28 years old and doing well enough to get my life back on track. Now I'm in a strange situation. I live in New Jersey and am currently on general aid from the state to get my medicine. This stuff is REALLY expensive. Doing the math it turns out that without any kind of insurance it would cost roughly $2400 a month. Without the medicine, I would hardly be able to walk, would be in constant pain, and would bleed internally. During my illness and recovery, I did not work, nor did I collect unemployment. I did however start to receive state aid a little longer than a year ago, which I'll lose if I get a job. Getting back to school is my current goal. I can function well enough, my colitis just makes me run to the bathroom more than an average person would, but other than that I'm at the point where it is not so bad. Online classes would work great for me, too. Paying for it is the problem. Financial Aid seems the obvious choice and I have looked into it, but it seems it requires a W-2 and I have not worked in over a year. Right now I am looking for information, or alternatives to my problem.

Resolved Question: Is this IBS pain or the Ovarian cyst?
Link - Wed, 19 Sep 2012 13:41:37 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Hi, I have been diagnosed with a large (5cm) fluid filled ovarian cyst. A few weeks before they found it i had the worst stomach pains ever. It started cramping low down in my stomach and quickly moved all over my abdomen settling in the lower left side (where the cyst is) At the time i didn't know what to do and was in so much pain it just sent me to sleep. When i woke up i felt like i had been kicked in the stomach, everywhere hurt, even to walk or stand up hurt. I went to my Gp who felt my stomach but couldn't find anything (interestingly it doesn't hurt when pushed) and said he thought it was IBS from stress of moving house to another country etc. Well i recovered in a few days and forgot about it until now 4 months later the exact same thing happened again so i ended up in hospital this time thinking my ovary was bursting. They did bloods and an ultrasound but found nothing. My Gynae said she thought the pain was nothing to do with the cyst but it has happened exactly just before my period both times...? I do get mild IBS, and find my bowels can be sensitive and i get stomach aches from it too ever since i was about 14 (now 30) but this was so much more intense. Can IBS get this bad? I have been very stressed, which i know is a trigger for me. Or is my gynae wrong and it's the cyst? Also the pain moves into my back at times. It really moves around a lot. I find rubbing my back or my hubby rubbing helps the pain
