The urinary system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Infections of the urinary tract (UTIs) are the second most common type of infection in the body. You may have a UTI if you notice
- Pain or burning when you use the bathroom
- Fever, tiredness or shakiness
- An urge to use the bathroom often
- Pressure in your lower belly
- Urine that smells bad or looks cloudy or reddish
- Less frequently, nausea or back pain
If you think you have a UTI, it is important to see your doctor. Your doctor can tell if you have a UTI by testing a sample of your urine. Treatment with medicines to kill the infection will make it better, often in one or two days.

Open Question: Wondering if my Mom's end is near?
(Mon, 13 Feb 2012 20:34:34 GMT)
I posted a little while ago asking about my mom. She's a longtime diabetic and has had Multiple Myeloma for close to 8 years now. Just after the new year she was hospitalized with pneumonia. We were told to be on standby for her to pass, amazingly, she recovered only days later to be told a diabetic infection in her leg was out of control and would require amputation. She had her right leg cut off above the knee. At this time, I traveled to her fearing she wouldn't survive the surgery or h

Voting Question: Preseptal celluitis, how long before the swelling goes down?
(Tue, 24 Jan 2012 02:51:39 GMT)
My school's incompetent health care doctor prescribed me a medication for urinary tract infection and my preseptal celluitis got worse in the time it took me to figure it out. Then I went to a real doctor. Now I'm on 3 different antibiotics at the highest dose in addition to doing heat compresses. I've had the condition for about a week but only got the real meds 3 days ago. How long will it take before the swelling goes down? It's really frustrating and almost intolerable.

ok, so i am a 20 yr old freshman male in college. I have a lot of problems, to a severity that i don't believe most college students have. I have spina bifida and while i can walk i cannot urinate on my own and have trouble with the other also. I get accidents frequently both with urinating and the other (#2) because of this condition. This really hurts my confidence. I will urinate just from walking. Also, the worst of it is that i get urinary tract infections and i am on and off antibiotics

Resolved Question: How do I know when it's time to have my cat put to sleep?
(Wed, 11 Jan 2012 15:16:53 GMT)
I have a 15 year old tortoiseshell cat (Cleo) who was diagnosed with kidney disease two years ago. We have been keeping her going with low protein prescription cat food, thyroid medication, and potassium powder. She's had 4 or 5 urinary tract infections. Her last one was a bad one. Basically we treat the infection, it goes away with up to a month of antibiotics (they do a month for the bad ones) and then we wait for the next infection. Today I noticed that she smells bad. Not sure if it's her

(Wed, 28 Dec 2011 22:04:26 GMT)
My cousins rescued and adopted a stray orange tabby cat from the street six years ago. He is fourteen years old now. Recently he was diagnosed with Kidney Failure and Hyperthyroidism. The vet prescribed four different kinds of dietary canned cat food, and my cousins were told to feed him only that and a specific medicine. The four kinds of cat food are: NF Kidney Function Feline Formula (he WILL sometimes eat this, but is finicky), Iams Renal veterinary formula (he WILL also sometimes eat this

(Tue, 13 Dec 2011 02:32:28 GMT)
My vet currently has my cats on the Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Feline URINARY SO Dry Cat Food. He says its best to keep males on it to prevent urinary tract infections. I have looked up that Iams Proactive Health helps maintain urinary tract health. I also know that Natural Choice/Nutro Natural dry food is very good for cats. Am wondering if I should use Iams instead of Royal Canin. Am looking to combine it with the Natural Choice/Nutro Natural dry food. Thoughts please.

I am worried about going to meps with all my history on my medical records. Two years ago I went to the hospital because I fainted in school, and they ended up diagnosing me with Vasolvega Syncope. They told me I needed to drink more water and exercise and it's something that will go away. The doctor prescribed me on a salt medication would help retain the fluids. About a six months later I was in the hospital for a Kidney infection. It went away but I got two more urinary tract infections lat

Resolved Question: UTI, Chlamydia, or Prostate Infection?
(Fri, 25 Nov 2011 04:11:34 GMT)
Hello everyone, Here’s my current situation and I’m hoping somebody can put my mind at ease and or provide insights while I wait for lab results. This last week I noticed a weird cooling sensation in my penis. Not stinging or burning, but cooling. Sort of the feeling you get with Deep Cold. Later in the day I noticed a strange feeling in my stomach and the best way I could describe it is getting kicked in the gentiles (but just lightly) and gives you the queasy feeling (guys you know the one)

I have a health issue, I get very frequent urinary tract infections. It gets so bad to where I can not stand up at all. Little traces of blood used to appear but not anymore. Voting Question: Do any of you wish you were a boy because of problems like these?
(Tue, 15 Nov 2011 05:53:31 GMT)
Do any women (besides myself) feel like men have an unfair advantage in terms of health and sex and are envious? I have chronic pelvic pain, frequent urinary tract infections, painful sex and possibly interstitial cystitis, and I can't help thinking if I were born a boy none of these problems would be happening and ruining my life. It seems so unfair that men are born with genitals that are out there and much less prone to problems. I sometimes feel angry and hateful towards men because of my

Resolved Question: Are yeast infections, urinary tract infections and antibiotics related?
(Thu, 10 Nov 2011 15:50:30 GMT)
My girlfriend and I disagree on how she should approach getting health care for a recurring yeast infection problem. There was a period of about 3 years, in Iran, where she was treated for a constant urinary tract infection and was treated with a barrage of antibiotics. The problem did not surface for another 3 years or so. Since then, she has become sexually active and has had numerous issues with yeast infections, bacterial infections, pain during sex and nearly continual discomfort. She h

Resolved Question: (Graphic) Fingered girlfriend, got a UTI, is bleeding. Feel like worst person, how to completely prevent this?
(Wed, 26 Oct 2011 09:41:32 GMT)
Back story: I was pushing fingering as we had already had sex, and despite it being really, really good, she couldn't orgasm (i think her clitoris is too high up for my penis to stimulate it) . She said it was normal for most girls and oral, hand work were the only ways to stimulate the clitoris. As I was doing it, she kept saying no, but before labelling be a rapist, we've been dating for 7 months and had had normal sex a LOT. So I safely kept at it, and thought she was playing hard to get, a

Resolved Question: does Mini Pill increase chances of getting urinary tract infections?

I have read that because the mini pill is progesterone only, it can increase the risk of getting uti's? I keep getting urinary tract infections, had about 4 this year, and they are very severe. I've only started getting these since being on the mini pill. I drink plenty of water, cranberry juice, tried all the health tips, but i'm wondering if I should come off the pill? Resolved Question: Should I get my kidney removed?

When I was 14, I was diagnosed with PUJ Obstruction to my left kidney, (the tube leading from the kidney to the bladder was obstructed) after 2 years of hospital/doctors visits. By that time, my kidney function had decreased to 10% in that kidney. Before the scan to check the function, I was told that if it was less than 15% then I was advised to have it removed. Being 14 years old, my mum decided to tell me that it was 35% functioning and only needed the surgery to correct the obstruction

Voting Question: My girlfriend has a suddenly numb vagina. There's been no problems for 7 months and as of yesterday its numb?
(Mon, 10 Oct 2011 22:54:30 GMT)
Quick history - she's in her late teens - had bacterial vaginitias and trichamonas but got that cleared about a month or two ago, had urinary tract infection and she's finishing up the meds on that today. There were no problems until this weekend when she had some time with another girl. The other girl "pinched" her inside her vagina - it hurt a little. Since that point she has had no feeling in her vagina. This has never been an issue before. Did the other girl pinching her cause this?

Last month I broke up with my long-term boyfriend, during that time neither him nor I suffered any sexual health problems. Voting Question: Could this be something more serious (health wise)?

Okay, this is a little embarrassing to ask (and usually I never would as I've even been known to avoid the doctor because of embarrassing things), but now this draws concern (and you don't know who I am anyway). This summer I've found that I've been uncommonly sick a lot--nothing serious, of course. But I'm starting to wonder if all these freak events add up. I've hardly ever had to go to the doctor before. I went ten years without getting more than a cold or sinus infection, but now it se

Resolved Question: Need help with cat UTI troubles and cat food.?
(Mon, 19 Sep 2011 00:39:37 GMT)
We had a cat that often got urinary tract infections. We took him to the vet, and she prescribed Wathom S/O dry food for him. This cat started getting sick, so I looked up information on his food. I found out that that food really makes cats pack on weight - this was a problem for all of our cats. In addition to that, using it for a prolonged period can cause a lot of health issues, including kidney troubles. That cat passed away, so we took the rest of our cats off of that expensive, unhealth

I have self-diagnosed myself with urinary tract infection and was on a 7 day course of antibiotics (Amoxicillin) about a month ago. It was fine after that, but about a week ago returned. So I took antibiotics again although I knew it wasn't the ideal solution as you're just selecting for the more restistent bacteria but I didn't know what else to do - I'm in Peru and not so sure of the health service. However, I finished this second course of a different antibiotic a few days ago and already t

Voting Question: I have an embarrasing health problem that I'm very uncomfortable talking to my family about?
