You've probably had an X-ray examination of some part of your body. Health care professionals use them to look for broken bones, problems in your lungs and abdomen, cavities in your teeth and many other problems. For example, mammograms use X-rays to look for tumors or suspicious areas in the breasts.
X-ray technology uses electromagnetic radiation to make images. The image is recorded on a film, called a radiograph. The parts of your body appear light or dark due to the different rates that your tissues absorb the X-rays. Calcium in bones absorbs X-rays the most, so bones look white on the radiograph. Fat and other soft tissues absorb less, and look gray. Air absorbs least, so lungs look black.
X-ray examination is painless, fast and easy. The amount of radiation exposure you receive during an X-ray examination is small.

Open Question: Treatment options for Latent TB?
(Mon, 13 Feb 2012 21:56:37 GMT)
I work in a non-patient part of a hospital and recently had a postive skin test for TB. The chest X-ray came back normal and I have no symptoms. I was tested in the previous year and I had very little redness with no raised portion so the test was negative, but this year it was postive and measured 19mm. The doctor said I have 3 options: 1) Do nothing and hope it never turns active, 2) Take 9 months of daily Isoniazid, or 3) take 12 weeks of a weekly combo of Isoniazid & Rifapentine. I am

Open Question: How can I get a surgery without medical insurance?
(Sun, 12 Feb 2012 01:54:18 GMT)
I have had major sinus issues for years now and they are getting worse. The last time I saw a specialist I paid $500 out of pocket for him to tell me I had sinusitis, rhinitis, deviated septum, and a couple other things I don't remember. He said I'd need X-Rays to proceed - but I couldn't afford $900 out of pocket for X-Rays. I also found out that I have polyps that need to be removed. I've had health insurance plenty of times before, but none of it covers xrays, or even the ENT specialist, s

Open Question: I am 30y/o diagnosed with COPD? Should I consider getting tested for Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency?
(Sat, 11 Feb 2012 20:08:35 GMT)
I am 30 years old. I have been having shortness of breath and difficulty with mild/moderate activity, since I had the bird flu a couple of winters ago. That flu did permanent damage to the lungs of everyone I know that caught it. Examples: Male 32 endurance athlete had a significant reduction in his athletic performance. Super morbidly obese women in her early 50’s now can barely walk across the house (she had already been short of breath considering her weight and other health problems, but I

Voting Question: Random episodes of fainting, many tests done but no solid answers?
(Fri, 10 Feb 2012 04:59:42 GMT)
For the past month or so, I've been randomly fainting, sometimes multiple times a day. Before this, I'd never had anything like this happen to me before. I just passed out at work and ever since then it's happened almost constantly. I was taken to the ER by ambulance and many tests were performed. Urine, blood, ECG, chest x-rays, and wore a holster heart monitor for 24 hours. They found out that although I have lower than average blood pressure, and my heart rate quickly increases when I'm sta

Resolved Question: Sound like he has more potential to be lame?
(Thu, 09 Feb 2012 18:30:25 GMT)
No videos, sorry, though I'll try and get one. Teenage quarter horse, overall good health, very hardy easy keeper, strong feet. Bought at age 6 a hair off in the front leg, but it didn't seem to bother him. Vet has x rayed the leg multiple times and confirmed nothing wrong with it. He favors it occasionally, usually in the winter or after it rains. It isn't constant, he is slightly pigeon toed and if his feet aren't trimmed on time and get too long he gets more trippy. Only in the walk and tr

Voting Question: Healing unhealthy/knotted muscle tissue?
(Wed, 08 Feb 2012 22:00:03 GMT)
I figured I'd ask on here and see if anybody knew anything. I grind my teeth a lot at night and have symptoms similar to TMJ disorder. A dentist specializing in this x-rayed my jaw joints and said nothing was wrong with them. He made me a mouth guard to sleep in and told me to exercise and work on stress management. I do at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day and I just bought a book that showed me a few stretches for my head/back/neck muscles. Shoulder rolls, shrugs, head roll, stuff l

Unlike say a mortgage, car payment, credit card, cell phone contract where you have signed and agreed to pay, when a medial office sends a bill saying that your health provider didn't cover all the expenses, should these additional fees have been discussed with you prior to accepting the doctor's visit? Resolved Question: Can my school legally force students to be scanned every day?
(Fri, 03 Feb 2012 01:14:44 GMT)
I received a notice today that as of Monday, all students will be subjected to screening via a metal detector and an x-ray scanner to scan their bags. They must empty their pockets, place their backpack on a conveyor belt, and proceed through a metal detector. There are no alternatives to this. Should a student refuse, they will be suspended for 3 days minimum. My concerns are: 1.) The 4th amendment. This is a violation of privacy that, under the US Constitution, is granted to every citizen.

Voting Question: How often do healthy cats throw up?
(Thu, 02 Feb 2012 06:21:18 GMT)
My cat throws up about once every 3 weeks. Sometimes hairballs, sometimes just food (undigested). He has been checked thoroughly by a vet (x ray, etc). He is on hairball control food which doesn't seem to do any good. He is 2.5 years old and stays in the house. Is this halfway normal or too much? He never acts sick and as stated before, has recently been given a clean bill of health. What can be done to curtail the vomiting?

Voting Question: Do multiple medical problems help me qualify for SSI or SSDI?
(Sun, 29 Jan 2012 18:06:43 GMT)
I have a long history of disc problems, currently my L-4 is bulging (again.) This was verified with an MRI recently. Also have had to have both rotator cuffs operated on/repaired in the last 5-6 years, it has left me with limited (above the chest) range. About a year ago something "blew" in my knee. A doctor and a surgeon examined me and it was determined (after an x-ray) that the miniscus was torn. That was in October and I am still in a lot of pain (that is why they did the MRI on my lo

They had me hooked up to the EKG, did some blood tests, and did a chest x-ray. They gave me 1 tablet of Ativan. Blood tests showed my potassium was low so they gave me 4 potassium tablets. The chest x-ray was normal so they told me to increase potassium in my diet and then I was discharged. I was there for only 2 hours. I just got my bill back and they want to

Voting Question: Maternity related services considered inpatient for insurance?
(Wed, 25 Jan 2012 03:54:13 GMT)
Most individual plans (87%) do not offer maternity coverage. I was fortunate enough to still be covered under an old employer by paying COBRA, and a majority of my expenses were covered. I had twins and had to have a C-Section. So now that I know I'm most likely to have a C-Section again, and who knows, another set of twins! (complete surprise) and am still of child bearing age. I am now under an individual plan, that does not offer maternity coverage. I was reading under the 'Inpatient' servi

Voting Question: Did My Dr. Make The Right Choice, Or Should I Be More Lenient?

I love my doctor. He doesn't write prescriptions willy-nilly, he used to play a sport that I play now, age-wise he is my peer, so I feel very comfortable, and his office can do x-rays, blood work, and lots of other things right in the office. I have spent a LOT of money there in the past six years. For one year alone, I was in there monthly. Lately, I have been really, REALLY depressed. I need a Rx bad, and it's an emergency. Resolved Question: What's the difference between Canadian and USA health care?
(Wed, 18 Jan 2012 18:42:40 GMT)
When I went to the doctor, I got a chest x ray, blood test and something else. It cost absolutely nothing. It was also very quick, no wait times. We pay medical services premiums up here (kind of like forced insurance I guess). But you are exempt if you don't make much money. What are the differences? Benefits/costs? Thanks! We don't get free healthcare. We are forced to pay premiums like insurance to the government, although it's pretty cheap depending on how much you make I guess.

So, I used to be more uptight about stuff, and I used to worry about my health, and other stuff. But now, I just dont really stress about anything. As a result, sometimes I let stuff get out of control, but I am a really laid back person now. Like, Im a manager at my work, and I used to not close until we were supposed to close, but now I just do it 15 minutes early, so that everyone gets home at the time we used to leave. I dont really worry about the consequences. Another example, I used to

Hey, to start off with a little information about myself, I'm 20 years old and currently reside in the Netherlands. I moved here about 6 months ago from the United States. It's important to note, that I very rarely drink, and I hadn't been drinking at all around the time the tests were done. Nor had I been using illicit drugs, smoking, etc. I've had chronic pains for almost as long as I can remember. Although chronic pain has definitely made me less active than I should be, I am not obese.

(Sat, 07 Jan 2012 17:23:35 GMT)
Hi, I'm a 16 year old girl, in reasonably good health, apart from the fact that i have this weird genetic type of diabetes, (MODY), but anyhow... Since about July i've been having these strange pains in my chest, when it started, it was like a gripping pain on the left side of my chest, that would only last a minute or so, but it used to happen a couple of times a day. (Thu, 05 Jan 2012 07:42:20 GMT)
I had two xrays today on my abdomen. I was in a bike accident and wanted to check if I had broken bones. It so happened that I didn't. I'm concerned about the bad effects of the xrays. Will it affect my ovaries and reproductive health? Is there any way to reverse the bad effects? I'm concerned that the xrays were an unnecessary exposure to radiation.
