Functional dissociation of adult‚?źborn neurons along the dorsoventral axis of the dentate gyrus

We examined the role of distinct subpopulations of adult‚?źborn hippocampal granule cells in learning‚?ź and anxiety‚?źrelated behaviors using low‚?źdose focal x‚?źirradiation directed specifically to the dorsal or ventral dentate gyrus. Our findings indicate a functional dissociation between adult‚?źborn neurons along the longitudinal axis of the dentate gyrus wherein new neurons in the dorsal dentate gyrus are required for timely acquisition of contextual discrimination while immature neurons in the ventral dentate gyrus are necessary for anxiolytic/antidepressant‚?źrelated effects of fluoxetine. Antidepressants and Suicide Attempts in Children

Warnings of increased risk for suicidality have been placed on antidepressant medications. Because antidepressants differ in their characteristics, including effects on neurotransmitters, it is possible that the risk of suicidal behavior for individual medications may differ. In a cohort of 36 842 children with review of medical records for confirmation of suicide attempts, we found no difference for risk of suicide attempts among individual medications compared with fluoxetine, the currently recommended antidepressant for treatment of depression. Fluoxetine Administered to Juvenile Monkeys: Effects on the Serotonin Transporter and Behavior.

CONCLUSIONS Fluoxetine administered to juvenile monkeys upregulates SERT into young adulthood.
