ugh! My surgeon had the same…
ugh! My surgeon had the same mentality, "It will go away in time, ijust take some benadryl" he said. Totally wanted to start tearing my skin off. The rash spread from my stomach down my legs and into what I like to call "The Danger Zone". I was furious! Because of this outbreak I ended up missing Christmas and New Years with my friends and family. I will never go back to that surgeons office ever again! I hope you are feeling better.

I recently underwent gall…
I recently underwent gall bladder removal surgery 2 weeks ago 12/23/11. My surgeon used Chloraprep paint from my chest to just below my naval. Surgery went fine, had a little trouble coming out of anesthesia that was about it. Approximately 24 hours later my skin became very red and irritated. Within 36 hours I had the worst rash I had ever seen. I ended up in Urgent Care and was prescribed an oral steroid since a topical steroid would not work (I was blistering badly). Breathing became very difficult and wasn't easy because of the surgery. What was supposed to be a simple procedure and have me back to work within a 10 day period has almost turned into a 3 week nightmare of pain, insomnia, itching and other not so fun bodily functions. I traded the gall bladder symptoms for a bunch more it would seem. Oye! I will make sure Chloraprep is never used on me for anything ever again.

I hope you are feeling better. Let me start by saying that I am an Internal Medicine Physician and also a patient who has experienced what you have gone through. I have had both my ACL's (in both my knees) reconstructed after sports injuries and both times I had a horrible skin reaction with hives and incredible itching which is called "contact dermatitis". After investigating it myself as well as consulting with colleagues and then speaking to my orthopedic surgeon, it was determined that the most probable cause was the chloraprep they used pre-op. With that said, I just had arthroscopic meniscal resection of one of my knees today and they didn't use chloraprep this time. Let's see what happens. -
I went in to donate blood…
I went in to donate blood two weeks ago, and they used Chloraprep to prep the donation area. I did not have an immediate reaction, but the area became red and hot to the touch. I applied ice packs to the area. After several days, it didn't get much better, so I purchased hydrocortisone cream and applied it to the area. That helped. Now there are red bumps in the area. It itches, but it looks much better. I stopped over at the Blood Connection office a week after the donation and saw the nurse there. She confirmed that it was a reaction to the Chloraprep. The next time I give blood I will ask them to use Betadyne instead.

oh my gosh, I have just…
oh my gosh, I have just had the most horrible experience afer surgery ever.. Terrible reaction to something . Dr. just played it off like it was so comon, put me on methol predisone pak- getting better but I am going to look into what caused this.. Sounds very much like Validated Itch - the original poster here.
Surgeon is great, had the same one done once before, no reaction like this. Need to find out what happened and what they used diffrently this time. Thanks for this page and a place for me to start my search.. Dr on Wed. and going to ask a lot of questions... -
Had a needle biopsy for my…
Had a needle biopsy for my thyroid on Monday. On Friday I got a Celestone shot for the horrible reaction to Chloraprep. I know I'm allergic to all tapes, latex, etc, so the only culprit was the Chloraprep. It got worse instead of resolving, to the point that I could not sleep. It goes from my jaw line to my collar bone. I also have chronic hives, so I take daily antihistamines and they made absolutely no difference. I hope the shot works and lets me sleep. I feel like having "NO CHLORAPREP" tattooed on me!! Misery!!

Had OP surgery 8/17 on my…
Had OP surgery 8/17 on my left elbow area. Post operative visit was flawless the following day. Was in emergency room 72 hours later after experiencing excruciating itching, burning pain for most of the weekend. Removing the dressing, I discovered patches of skin coming off from blistering as well as obviously irritated skin wherever the dressing seemed to be. It was agony for a while, as my skin was tearing off with the adhesives used to hold on the surgical sponges over the suture line. That was very distressing as well as painful and mentally tormenting watching it happen. Official E.D. diagnosis: Contact dermatitis. The surgeon's nurse saw it the following day and said immediately that I was allergic to "Chloraprep"-- a surgical prep solution they specifically had asked their own surgery center to stop using because of similar reactions! It led to a week of complete chaos, as I now couldn't comfortably wear the sling intended to immobilize the limb that was affected. All attention was on resolving the dermatitis caused by the prep, and to obviously avoid infection because of the obvious raw open dermal areas anywhere around the fourteen sutures. I'm as irritated now as my skin was then, and I'm still itching. Took a couple of weeks, and .25% prescription strength steroid cream, countless dressing changes--the dressings would be soaked within hours. What a nightmare. I've got pictures, don't know how to load them from my phone. I am disgusted with this needless complication, pain, and preventable injury.

My brother has polycythemia…
My brother has polycythemia which is treated by taking a pint of blood when his red blood cell count gets above 46. The last two times we have tried to get his blood taken, we've had to have the nurse take out the needle within 10 seconds of her putting it in because my brother complains of severe itching and burning at the puncture site. We have finally figured out that it is the chloraprep that is causing the problem. Next time we're insisting on iodine!

After my beast biopsy in…
After my beast biopsy in 7/11, I experienced a severe rash with raised bumps blistering that manifested 3 to 4 days after the biopsy. The itching was unbearable. At first I thought it was the surgical tape but then it started to spread over my entire side of my breast and to the inside of my arm. I was seen by several doctors that had no clue as to how or why it was happening. Finally, a dermatologist prescribed a steroid topical cream along with a antihistamine. It took over two weeks to resolve. I then had a bilateral mastectomy the following month and very specifically told them NO TAPE, but the same rash happened on an even larger scale, over both breasts along with my abdomen. The blistering is similar to a 2nd degree burn with raised red bumps and itching. It seemed to be worse in areas that were covered even though no tape was used. It was then I put it together that is must have been the surgery wash used. Chloraprep was used both times with the same horrendous rash as a result. I think the reaction is more common than is being reported and is not taken seriously. The surgeons looked at me as if I was crazy. I'm now dealing with both post op pain along with this horrid rash that could have been avoided.

I had hernia/lap band surgery…
I had hernia/lap band surgery on August 5th and had a severe allergic reaction to the chloroprep. It began post operatively approximately 6 hours after surgery and has continued to this day. My stomach looked like it had been painted a beet red color with hives all over. You could see the mark from where the applicator ended it's strokes. Blisters formed where bandages were on my stomach - I suppose because I couldn't remove the solution under there immediately. This has been an awful experience for me and here I am 11 days post op and still itchy and rashy. Never ever again!!! Donna from NY

I had a heart catherization…
I had a heart catherization on August 3, 2011. I was to keep the pressure bandage on for a day, then cover with a band aide. When I took the initial cover off I notice I had a rash and looked as if I have been scalded. This was like that on both sides in groin area. This rash continued the next day down to my knees which is where I was scrubbed all the way down to.I could find no relief..... finally my heart doctor prescribed a steroid ointment to be applied in all the areas this rash had taken overthree to four times a day. Taday is August 12, 2011 and I still have the itching and the rash however it is getting better. Thank Goodness! I am to have a pacemaker as soon as they get it scheduled, but I can tell you know they will be find a liquid to prep me with, because clothes or no clothes I'll run out the door if come at me with the chloraprep. I have never gone through so much itching, burning, the little bumps and pain. I had no pain medication to take so I went through the grin and bear it treatment. I will never allow anyone to use that on me again.

I pray for all the people…
I pray for all the people suffering and thank all the health care professionals. Especially NURSES. I am 25 & have Thalassemia major. I get blood transfusions every 2 weeks since birth. Most of my life I have been in & out of the hospital.First port-a-cath at 7. Ports are both a blessing a curse. I have had a total of 4 ports, each lasting 3-4 years until removal due to infection or overuse. The prepping of an IV site has remained the same until recently. Clean area with Isopropyl Alcohol then Iodine (Betadine) let dry, repeat alcohol, then Iodine, repeated for a total of 3 times. On my last and final port-a-cath a new antiseptic was used. Chlora-prep. It was needed to stop these deadly antibiotic resistant bacteria MERSA. I have been treated at City of Hope and currently Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.
At City of Hope the nurse was accessing my port-a-cath and used a new cleanser with a round pad on a stick with liquid inside. Within a minute I felt a burning itchy sensation that became so bad within 30 mins that they had to remove the tape and flush the area with saline. Nothing helped and they removed the needle after they gave me some IV hydrocortisone and benadryl. The burning lasted for a few hours and got so bad I needed some Dilaudid.
2nd time was a few years later during a port infection. To draw blood cultures the skin must be cleansed extremely well. I told them I am allergic and they said no, that can not happen. I let them use it & bam, horrible burning with redness, rash and severe pain that lasted days. After that reaction the doctors added Chlorhexidine Gluconate to my allergy list, which is short list with the only other med being vancomycin.
I am done with the ports so I thought I was done ever having to deal with evil chlora-prep. Nope, stupid lab tech asked me after placing my ID band on if I had allergies. I said yup, and told her Vanco and Chlora-prep. She wrote it down on my ID band. So the lab tech said okay and grabbed a alcohol pad, but it was a mix of 70% Isopropyl Alcohol and Chlora-prep. I screamed NO!!! I am horribly allergic. She said oh, it should affect me because its so diluted plus they are drawing blood cultures and need to use it. I said use Iodine and Alcohol. So she cleaned the area with Iodine, then still used the damn mixed pad of Isopropyl Alcohol and Chlora-prep.Quick reaction again. It has been two days and my skin has a patch of white raised small bumps over a reddened bottom layer of skin right on the top of my hand. GOD, the FDA needs to ban this evil chemical. It has been days I am still plagued with this small rash localized rash. PAINFUL and nothing helps. Time for benadryl, opiates, and benzos. Good Luck everyone to get the word out about this painful allergy.
Peace, Love and Good Health, Adam -
Had a stent put in. Chloroprep…
Had a stent put in. Chloroprep on stomach below belly button down to thigh creases and down right thigh for incision. Was shaved and chloroprep was applied between my thighs and to my lady parts. No problem until I came home 2 days after surgery and the morphine was out of my system. Then....Hell on Earth. Same as others have reported...a zillion bumps everywhere chloroprep was applied. So itchy I wanted to tear my skin off. Went to main doctor...she had no clue but gave me a steroid shot. That did not help. Nothing helps but Vicodin. Keeps the nerve endings from firing so I can sleep. Spanx type undies down to the thigh help a bit during the day so nothing touches the bumps. I hate going to the bathroom as the very idea of taking down my undies and wiping makes me want to scratch myself to death. Touching them makes them all itch at the same time.
Surgeon was baffled...or so he said. Surely this can't be a mystery considering the many horrible reactions. Dermatologist said to apply hydrocortisone cream....but that barely works. Ice helps...amazingly. I am sending my surgeon many articles and testimonials. He was so blase about it all. "Oh it will go away." No concern at all for my itching. This upsets me more than anything. And....the rash is spreading down my thigh. Why does no surgeon know about this horrible drug???????? -
I had an umbilical hernia…
I had an umbilical hernia repaired and followed the surgeon's order not to show for 24 hours. I noticed an area specific rash limited to the preoperative scrub region. It is now day 7 and the rash is still persisting. I called the surgeon today and they insisted it was not the Chloraprep. Told me it was the Loritab. I object since, I have not used the pain medication for 3 days now. I believe it is the Chloraprep.

I had knee surgery mid March…
I had knee surgery mid March 2011, 24 hours after sugery when I was allowed to shower and wash my leg I noticed a rash from above my knee down to my ankles. I assumed it was from the Chloraprep since I have sensitive skin anyways so I just used my ecxema medicine. that didn't help. I went back to the doctor about 3 weeks after surgery and they put me on a medrol pac (steroid). The rash got better so I figured I was on the mend. About a week after finishing the steroid the rash came back, worse. So back to the doctor I went and they put me on another dose of medrol. It has now been over 2 months since my surgery and the rash covers the front of my calf and is red, raised and extremely itchy. My whole leg just hurts. I am going back again to the doctor to see if there is anything that can be done. This is definitely not getting any better and seems to be getting worse.

My son had ureterectomy and…
My son had ureterectomy and pyeloplasty a month ago and had a pretty bad rash on his torso where he was healing. I thought the itchiness was due to the healing incisions and figured he was scratching too hard and broke the skin. After one month of healing, his stitches were gone and scars had formed where the incisions were, but the scabs from the rash still existed.
We had the doctor look at the area and he said, "Hm, that's weird. Maybe it was a reaction to the cleaning solution." Little did I know I was sending the poor kid back into surgery to have it put on AGAIN! So now he has the rash all over again, but this time in his groin and buttocks area. He is so itchy he can barely stand it! Heating pads help, but if it's touched it starts to itch all over again. I'm sad for him that it takes so long to run it's course, but glad I know now what they used so we can avoid it in the future. He also had a "red spot" reaction to amoxicillin when he was a year old, so he hasn't had it since (he's now 11). I wonder if it is a similar allergy?? -
03/03/11 I had a fibroid…
03/03/11 I had a fibroid tumor removed on my left palm. Choloaprep was used and where the liquid drained down the wrist and was dropped a couple of places on my left thigh there was severe contact dermititis. It was 6 wks and 2 courses of cortisone bebroe it started to let up. The surgeon said the reaction just had to run its course. It was horrible severe itching, rash and breaking out at will.

had shoulder arthoscopic…
had shoulder arthoscopic surgery. excellent result from the surgery but had a horrible reaction to the chloraprep. I am highly allergic to poison ivy and it was almost that same reaction. benedryl gave no relief but went through 4 tubes of 1% hydrocortisone cream to keep the itching down. still have the rash 2 1/2 weeks after surgery but it is slowly healing. glad I found it about the sensitivity after this surgery instead something more serious. surprised there aren't more statistics kept about people having adverse reactions to this surgical prep medication.

I had gall bladder surgery…
I had gall bladder surgery on 3/11/11, and they used Chloraprep. I broke out all over my abdomen where they applied it. The rash lasted for 12 days. Will definitely note that as one of my allergies in the future.

Had colon surgery Feb. 1,…
Had colon surgery Feb. 1, 2011. My entire torso was inflamed...burning and itching. I couldn't stand for anything to touch me. This was much more painful than my surgery. For days afterwards, heat and clothing caused this to flare up and burn and itch again. The only relief I could get was coating it with aloe gel. Bendaryl gave no relief. My stomach has now peeled and it is mostly calmed down. Doctor told me they used Chloraprep. Scares me to think of what might happen in the future!

I went to give a blood donation for the ninth time yesterday. After seconds on the Chloraprep being applied to the donation area, the whole area when red and blotchy. It wasn't itchy but very hot to the touch. The donor assistant washed the Chloraprep off with water but by this time my whole are was covered in the rash. They applied a cold compress to reduce the rash. After about three minutes the rash subsided.

I had surgery almost four…
I had surgery almost four weeks ago. I had a bump removed from my right wrist. I had it in a bandage and it felt as though my hand and wrist were going to explode. When the doctor, after one week, took off the bandage, I had blisters, and total redness. My arm, wrist was very swollen and felt like they were on fire. Well, the redness is turning brownish black and as I try to use my wrist and hand more, the burning is intense. The scare looks like a burn. I have not started therapy. I am going to see a specialist this week to get to the bottom of this. This is horrible.

I have had a pic line site…
I have had a pic line site in twice , once in July and now another in December to treat my Lyme symptoms. After four weeks of having the 1st pic, I developed a red itchy rash that only got worst, as a result the line was pulled and for the rest of that treatment I was given meds via IV. After 6 weeks the rash was still coming up on every Iv site and pic line site. Chloroprep was used in every instance. Now I have a new site and I've developed a red itchy rash which turned in to angry oozing blisters around the site and the rest of my arm. It is unbearable! I was treated with 2 weeks of a Medrol pac , (steroids) Zyrtec twice a day and now an even stronger prescribed antihistamine. The rash calmed down a bit..but returned fully within a day of being off of the steroids. I've since stopped the steroids because I gained 10 lbs in a week.
Now the bumps are spreading down my arm and has since spread to the other arm and other parts of my body. I am so miserable and looking for an alternative to chloropreop. I also have a sensitivity to betadine (iodine). I have to keep the pic in for at least another month and there is still not much relief. We have since stopped
using the chloroprep all over my arm, but not sure what to use to maintain the integrity of the pic line site. I did have the doctor not wrap the whole upper arm and started to use Gold Bond intensive healing cream and it has provided extensive healing. All of a sudden last night without provocation the rash is coming up again and the itching is unbearable. My body has absorbed the chloroprep and it seems to be holding on to it. The rash is spreading rapidly and I am at my wits end. Also important to mention I have a latex allergy and am having a reaction to all types of adhesive. We are not using tape but a small piece of latex free tegaderm which it appears I'm allergic to as well. If anyone is experiencing similar issues please and has solutions please respond. -
I had surgery to repair my…
I had surgery to repair my distal bicep tendon. The doctors applied Chloraprep to my left arm, from the wrist to the shoulder. Two days after the procedure, I started itching just under the edges of the dressing. I went to the doctor the next day, he removed the dressing, to discover a major red blistery rash, over the entire surface of the arm. He swabbed the arm with alcohol, and applied a much lighter dressing. I was given a steroid series, and told the rash would go away. As per doctors reccomendations, I removed the dressing when I got home. The rash is strange. I can actually watch blisters forming before my eyes. I sure hope this medication works fast, this situation is miserable. If you don't know if you are allergic to this prep, be sure something else is used on your skin.

Had knee arthroscopy on Septembe…
Had knee arthroscopy on September 22nd and am still dealing with the rash on October 5th. I suspect it's mostly subsided because the itch is somewhat bearable now. The first thing I noticed was an odd skin reaction above the knee and away from my incisions. I thought someone "slipped" with their instrument because it looked almost like something scraped my skin. Later that day, the site began to itch and the bumps were bright red and blistery looking. The itching soon became absolutely intense and quickly spread over my entire leg except for my knee (basically, everywhere the prep was used). Eventually, the bumps recessed into the skin while remaining very visible and then, to my dismay, started to appear on my other leg. I don't know if this was caused by residual prep in the skin breaks from scratching or what. Had visit with my surgeon today and he prescribed a Cortizone pill series that he said will knock the rash right out. I sure hope so, because this was truly not fun!

Had major foot reconstruction…
Had major foot reconstruction (first sugery of my life) including a plate and donor bone and pins and they used chloraprep. They removed my surgical dressings after one week. The entire soul of my foot and all my toes were blistered into one massive raised area. The surgeon saw me a few weeks later and the whole soul was brownish black. He freaked a little and sent me to a dermatoligist specialist. He suspected chemical burn but took a skin sample to also check for anything further. Well after 7 weeks, the entire soul of my foot peeled bit by bit. Now it is a huge bright red and tender area. No itching though. But it is sore and burns a bit. Now the dermatologist says it is not a chemical burn . . . I "just have psoriasis"! Right! Like I believe that - NOT! I am now in my eighth week and the redness is still there and so is the tenderness. I am allergic to steroids so they have prescribed a substitute cream which costs over $300 AFTER my insurance (which is good insurance)!! So I didn't get it. This has really messed up my foot and so far my healing process, as it is a bit hard to try therapy and to start walking when the soul of your foot has been burnt!

I got the angry red rash/hives…
I got the angry red rash/hives for about 3.5 weeks post-op. It started as little red dots that were itchy. Then developed into hives and expanded from one area to another based on contact. This was the worst rash I've ever had. Here's some tips after going to the dermatologist:
- Apply locoid lipocream (prescrption) twice a day. If the rash is really bad, use Clobix (steroid cream - prescription) once a day.
- Claritin or Zyrtec will help a lot. Zyrtec makes you sleepy.
- Compress with cold water (take luke warm showers). Hot water is not good for any allergic reaction
- Use cetaphil soap or no soap when showering on reactive area. -
I had Chloraprep as well…
I had Chloraprep as well during my surgery. They prepped my neck and chest area and I broke out in hives 2 days after surgery. It's really itchy...almost unbearable. I tried applying hydrocortisone 1% but it stings like heck and doesn't seem to do that much good. I don't know if I should continue applying the cream. Any suggestions? Haven't tried benadryl yet.

I developed hives, a nasty…
I developed hives, a nasty rash and itching 10 days out post-op after choro-prep was used on me. The rash was limited to the leg that was prepped for surgery. I continue to take benedryl daily and the rash is subsiding some. I am now 16 days post-op and still dealing with it. On day 14, I went to the doctor, had my splint changed and we were able to scrub my leg some with 0.9% normal saline and get some of the orange stuff off. I prefer betadine prep after this experience.

I had surgery to repair a…
I had surgery to repair a collapsed Radius bone after a fracture and had Chloraprep used on me from my left hand to above my elbow. The second day after surgery, you could see a whelt under the top part of the dressing the docotr had applied. By the third day, I had to call the doctor. The had me remove the dressing which revealed blisters all along the incision area and the rest of the arm was swollen and covered with a raised red rash. Since I had the surgery done and hour and a half away from where I live, the sent me to the ER at the local hospital. They thought I had a bacterial infection so started dosing me with IV antibiotics which did no good. After 2 trips to my doctor, and several prescriptions, my arm is finally on the mend. I was finally prescribed oral prednisone after the prescription cortizone cream failed to work. I was also prescribed a high dose of antihistimine. I still have a problem with going into the sun or heat. As soon as I walk outside and the sun hits my skin, I get the rash adn itching all over again. Hopefully this will be a temporary thing. It said on the Chloraprep web site that if this happens to contact your doctor because it could be something else..........going to research that!

I had an umbilical hernia…
I had an umbilical hernia repair and my gallbladder removed and had Chloraprep on me from just under my chest to around the groin area. After two days, I was told I could shower, and that's when I noticed I had a red, raised, and itchy rash everywhere the Chloraprep was. I took Benadryl (both pill and cream form), but neither did any good. I used hydrocortisone 1% and within three or four days, the rash was gone. After showering, I can still see where the rash was, but I don't have any of the other symptoms. It was so irritating...trying to get well from surgeries only to have to deal with a huge rash.

I had a minor surgery done…
I had a minor surgery done to remove an epidermal cyst. The area, I think, was prepped with Chloraprep. I was fine immediately after until the afternoon the next day. I developed an itchy rash that is bascially hives. I had the procedure done on Tuesday, it is now Saturday and I still have it. A little better, but VERY slightly. Still red and irritated, I have moments where it seems almost just as irritated as when I first developed it. I never noticed I'd had an reaction to Chorlaprep before- I'm an LVN and work at the facility my procedure was performed at. I was prescribed Desonide, but thinking of the side effects, I am deciding not to use it. I don't want to use a corticosteroid and risk weight gain in my face along with the other side effects of Prednisone! This is so irritiating in more ways than one. I just don't want other new side effects in addition to the one I already am having...no one seems to have an answer to how long it will take..
