It seems to me that if a patient already has severe problems with their respiratory system that it would be foolish to administer this type of drug that can and has caused respiratory failure in patients before.
If you know that your patient has only one lung to start with and has been diagnosed with pneumonia and ARDS and has cardiac problems it seems only logical to do everything you can to keep the patient from getting pseudomonas from cross bacterial infection.
But this was not the case, no extra measures were taken to keep the safety of this patient from cross contamination while in ICU fighting for his life.
This patient finally started to show improvement for three days in a row, his chest x-rays showed improvement all his vitals showed improvement. He was alert and communicating with family and nurses. He would smile and laugh at times. Then a doctor decided to put him on the antibiotic colistin because the patient had contracted pseudomonas. Within just a few hours the patient started to have problems. All his numbers such as heart rate , oxygen intake and blood pressure began to drop except his heart rate which was rather high. Within 24 hours there had been no change in this patient except for the worse. All his numbers started dropping and he coded. They worked to revive the patient for 35 minutes without success. The young man past away. He was 36 years old, had his whole life to live. This young man is my son, my only child and I am so devastated and lost without him. I believe my sons life could have been saved. I do not believe the hospital, doctors or nurses took the proper care to make sure there was no chance of cross contamination. I also know he was diagnosd with pseudomonas about a week before any new treatment was given to him or precautions taken such as gowning up and putting on gloves. I just can not understand WHY a doctor would administer this drug colistin to a patient that is already having pulmonary distress and only one lung, knowing what the side effects could be. I do not understand it and I know I never will. I also know that nothing will bring my son back to me, but if my story can help another patient I will be somewhat satisfied.
