In a quick scan of this blog…
In a quick scan of this blog I don't see the term "MTHFR gene mutation(s)". These mutations reportedly affect between 40-70% of the US population. A blood test is available to determine if you have the problem.
(Ask a knowledgeable MD about MTHFR)
These mutations cause the body to not process Vitamin B-12 and Folic acid properly: that is, our digestive enzymes should convert these vitamins to methyl-B-12 and methyl-folate for us, but they don't.
Deplin is methyl folate. Thus it bypasses the faulty digestive step and gives us the ability to process the nutrients we need. You should also take Methyl-B-12 supplement to complete the set.
I started several months ago, and they have added two hours to each day for this 75 year old, I get up earlier, and don't absolutely have to have an afternoon nap like I did for the past 4-5 years. -
<b>Describe I was put…
<b>Describe I was put on Deplin 15mg to supplement the antidepressent that I have been on for for 3wks now. This was just 2 days ago. I feel a little better, but I am an insulin dependent diabetic, and my sugars have actually gone up to 300 today, which is not good. And I even went to Curves this morning and did some Zumba, which usually lowers the sugar in the afternoon. So it could just be my crazy sugar, or it could be the deplin, though I can't any reason for it being the deplin.

Very lethargic, ringing in my ears. I feel like I have too much going on in my brain if that makes any sense. I'm never taking this again.

I just read Jennifer Connelly's…
I just read Jennifer Connelly's post about her experience with Deplin.I've been diagnosed with major depressive disorder and bi-polar. I had been seeing a county provided psychologist who kept trying different anti psychotropic drugs I had bad reactions to the 7 different drugs they tried within a 6 month period. My reactions to these drugs were the same as Jennifer describes with her use of Deplin. I thought I was insane and I would never get my sanity back again. I was also seeing a neurologist for physical problems. My neurologist did a lot of tests, my blood work showed I was low in Folic acid. My brain MRI showed I had a lesion on it deep inside. My neurologist prescribed Deplin, suggested I find a new psychologist, stop taking antipsychotics and the Abilify I was on (with bad reactions to that medication too), switched my Celexa to Lexapro(at my request,I had better results with Lexapro). It is now 3 months later, I'm no longer depressed even with chronic pain. I was able to reduce my Xanax from 3 times daily to 1 time daily. I am taking myself off the Lexapro because I want to be on less medications ( will go back on it if I begin to have a problem with depression again). I no longer need a mood stabilizer for my bi-polar. My friends are telling me I'm "normal again", " the old Pam is back" and I agree with them. I thank God for Deplin. I started to research Deplin on the Internet after I noticed an improvement in my mental illnesses. I found out that Deplin goes straight to the brain and works on the Serotonin,Norepinephrine and Dopamine. My neurologist prescribed it for the brain lesion and it also has helped my depression and bi-polar. What a great discovery!!! I can not say enough good about Deplin, it has completely turned my world around in a wonderfully good way!!!

It was very good until I…
It was very good until I started having problems with my taste, head aches, and what was finally my breaking point was muscle pain in my back. Through my research I found these to be rare but noted side effects. No more for me...my doctor is slowly decreasing the dosage as of today. I'm in pain right now as I'm typing. I really did appreciate the amount of energy, the motivation, and the stable mind set that I had and wish I could feel this good mentally without it. I'm so positive and optimistic now more than I have been in years of depression. It really did help me.

I started Deplin a week ago…
I started Deplin a week ago as an add on to zoloft (i was on 50 but my NP upped it to 100) at about the same time she put me on Wellbutrin 300xl. Good to great for a couple months then lots of fatigue and tiredness. She gave me Deplin to try and now I just feel "not right". Sort of sad- ish" and I'm getting those brain zaps that you get when you go off an SSRI. I also feel less sociable. I've been trying to be extra healthy ie: lots of vitamins, sleep, water but have dropped most exercise cause I'm not feeling right. Calling her today *DONT_KNOW*

I would suggest trying Zoloft.…
I would suggest trying Zoloft. I have lost weight on it, and it's very effective with no side effects for many people. The Deplin might help her lose weight because it is a B-vitamin and gives you an energy boost, but it seems that it is not effective for treating depression unless COMBINED with an SSRI (zoloft, prozac, paxil, etc.) I'm not sure why doctors would be prescribing it by itself, especially with the increase risk of cancer it poses. Abilify is a newer "designer drug" where not all side effects (like weight gain) are well-documented yet. I highly suggest trying something safer, and more tried-and-true, and like I said, I have lost weight on Zoloft no problem. I take it for depression, anxiety, and PTSD, and it has been the only thing that helps with all three issues. Hope thsi helps!

I was just recently put on…
I was just recently put on Deplin for depression. There's also been a virus going around, and I'm not sure if I've caught it, or if it's a side effect from the meds. I started showing symptoms of the virus it the day after I was first put on Deplin. Sore throat, head throbbing, stomach aches, a rattling cough, and a loss of appetite. Is this from the Deplin? I feel like I should ask my neurologist, but I'm not going to see him for another 3 weeks.

I had a severe reaction. My forehead broke out in a rash and so did my stomach. But I also had a reaction to trileptal.

My wife was just put on Deplin…
My wife was just put on Deplin to replace the Abilify she was prescribed just a few weeks ago. She wanted to change to something other than the Abilify because she gained weight while taking it. Although I could see a change to the good with her moods/depression but she is very consciencous about gaining weight, so where's the trade off? Has anyone ever seen Deplin used as an anti-depresent and how well did it work. My wife has genuine issues with both myself and her father having terminal cancers. I would just like for her to enjoy a little bit of life as she grows in age for our grandchildrens sake.

It sounds as if your boyfriend has a mixture of problems. Was alcohol involved? Is he taking his meds regularly? I do not think it is Deplin causing this.

I don't think anyone should take this medicine, just because my boyfriend got mad at me one night over somthing stupid had a anxiety attack, and then when he got better from that. He tried to kill himself in front of everyone he loved more than once.
So no one should take this medicine -
I think it helps. I…
I think it helps. I stopped using it when my insurance stopped paying. I had a really tough time. I started taking it again and it seems to make a difference. Why won't the FDA approve it?

I have had a rocky 3 years...wen…
I have had a rocky 3 years...went off effexor and the brain damage it caused appeared to be permanent, and was misdiagnosed as bipolar. I thought for sure I would forever live a life of adjusting my meds(lithium, vallium, lamictal, seroquel and horomones) All which were adjusted every few weeks or so when I would "go crazy". My psychiatrist wanted me on more of everythig by last June, my counsler felt I was misdiagnosed but refused to admit it was the effexor, and my doctor was at a loss. I flipped out {{When I say flip out or go crazy, these are times when I would just hit a wall and overnight sink into some of the deepest depressions I have felt in my entire life. Combined with feeling if I change things in my life I could be happier. In one fit I packed my stuff and told my son we were walking out on the lease and moving across state, I tried to abandondon my son once, luckily I have family and friends who stepped in. In general just do crazy things that are VERY out of character for me.}}}}and crashed hard in July, began searching for new doctors. Due to insurance I could not find one I could afford who agreed with me about the Effexor. So I told my doctor I decided I needed a clean slate, and although I knew it was not the safe thing to do, I was going to stop my meds. I mean, they obviously were not helping. SO, with some help from my doctor, and much from family and friends, I went off everything but the lithium. I was A LOT better. But still depressed. Especially since in all the turmoil, I lost my home, my husband, and my job.
That's when my doctor reccomended Deplin. It grounded me. I became focused again. I am still having some issues. But all and all I am SO much better, mainly depression wise. It's like the sun is shining everyday inside of me. I feel really good.
I think I am having some side effects, but since I started it I have had strep throat and a sinus infection. So I don't know what side effects are from the deplin, or being sick, or the antibiotics.
I do think my sleep has been weird, and have changed the time of day I take it, but it's not helping. I am so tired in morning I fall back asleep before my hand can hit snooze. and have fallen asleep when I sit on my son's bed to wake him, more like passing out. After a cup of offee or 2 I am ok. But I never used to drink coffee at all.
And a headache here and there, but with my sinuses and allergies it's hard to say. I have always had headaches randomly. They just feel a bit more constant lately. -
Hi Kara,
I'm glad that you…
Hi Kara,
I'm glad that you have made such progress. Your information could prove very helpful for me. In addition to depression, I have sleep apnea and delayed sleep onset syndrom. I have had several over-night sleep studies over the last 10+ years. I never get any stage 4 or stage 5 sleep. Like you, I have a genetic issue. Mine makes it impossible for me to produce a key liver enzyme (Cytochrom P450 2D6). It's the one reponsible for metabolizing the vast majority of anti-depressants and ADD medications.
I'm wondering if I also lack the enzyme you mention that is a catalyst for 3 key chemicals for stage 5 sleep. Would you please tell me the tests that your doctor gave you, the enzyme/amino acid you are deficient in, and the names of the 3 chemicals you mentioned. My goal is to take that information to my doctor and hopefully get tested like I assume you were.
This is my first post, so I'm not sure how this site works. There may be a way to send private messages. If you prefer that for the kind of detail I am asking for, please do so.
Thank you,
Peter -
Dear Kara,
Your…
Dear Kara,
Your story sounds alot like mine. I have a genetic predisposition for depression nd severe sleep problems. I have alot of medical problems which make pain and the feeling that I will never be a worthwhile person again even worse. I need to know if you can share with me exactly what helped you. I have tried so mny different things and nothing works for more than a few weeks for sleep. Right now I try so much stuff at night that I'm afraid of overdoseing. Where is the doctor you are useing located and his name, I will travel if I can. I have systemic lupus with other complications but the depression and sleep problems are the worse. Thanks for listening. e-mail me at mvickers@northstate.net -
Just started about 6 days…
Just started about 6 days ago. Have had a headache every day. Decided yesterday not to take it with the rest of my meds in the morning, but take it with my afternoon meds. I had no headache, but this afternoon headache. I am thinking about not taking my normal vitamin and reducing the Delpin by 1/2. Will talk to the doctor on my next appointment. I have read a lot of good talk about Delpin and am waiting with tiptoe anticipation to feel what everyone else is feeling. Peace to all.

I was diagnosed with bi-polar…
I was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder 10 years ago and through trying most anti-depressants and cross-over ani-convulsants to control it, was resigned to accepting the little relief any provided. Lamictal was the best for me and has had the most long lasting and long ranging effects, but I was still moody- up and down, unmotivated, severe lack of energy (preaching to the choir here, huh?). I started seeing a new doctor who wasn't content with my simple request for medication management. He had studied sleep and it's effects on bi-polar disorder and through research and colleagues came to understand bi-polar and Deplin. Due to a genetic predisposition to an enzyme deficiency (an amino acid) that is responsible as a catalyst for 3 key chemicals to be produced during stage 5 sleep, my bi-polar was aggitated. I never produced the 3 chemicals that healthy people produce every night. And they were the key to my moods, motivation, energy and behavior. I feel NEW. I feel functional. I have zero side effects (it has none reported which is why it is not yet considered a "drug" by the FDA, only a "medical food") other than my body beginning to enter a state of homeostasis for the first time in my life. It's incredible. To finally feel like I can have more in life and get more out of life because I'm simply more functional! I know there is no "cure" for bi=polar, but I am managing it better than I ever dreamed. I now look forward, because I see a future that's brighter.

It started 10 years ago with…
It started 10 years ago with a phys. prescribing anti-depressants one after another and none of the improved my depression but only made it worse. After switching over to a new Doctor after 10 years, he had a totally different diagnosis for me which I was amazed about. I have extreme highs an lows but nod bi-polar, He recommended a small dose of Lamictal to balance out my mood and it worked. Then he wanted to tackle my Adult ADD with Adderall which again he was right on, who wouldn't be depressed with un-treated add? I also was taking Klonipin to sleep, started at a 1/4 mg and seemed to work my way up to 3mg. per day. I hate taking all of thes medications exspecially because I'm so sensitive to the smallest dosage. He first was not happy with the fact that Klonipin was prescribed for sleep. I tried to stop taken it all together and had major withdrawals from it and was so sick. Didn't know much about Benzo's being addictive. He gave me a weeks supply of Deplin and my spirits we so up and I was so happy. we have been trying to wean of some of the meds I've been on and I think if Deplin keeps working, I have no doubt. Wish me luck!

There isn't enough space…
There isn't enough space here to describe the difference in my life since I started Deplin three months ago. I lost a child two years ago so my depression has been severe. I take Deplin along with Celexa now. I have been able to quit eating hard core sugar (cakes, cookies, ice cream) which I was addicted to. I walked a half marathon (13.1 mile) this weekend. I'm a little sloppy around the house but have stopped being that way since taking Deplin. My relationships are better and I"m just overall so much happier. It has been a Godsend to me and I would not stop taking it. I have no bad side effects from it.

Lynn, I am about to start…
Lynn, I am about to start taking Deplin in addition to Pristiq and Lexapro. I've been researching Deplin, and apparently it works best IN COMBINATION with depression meds, so unless your doctor recommends stopping your meds, I would continue to take them along with the Deplin.

I have suffered with clinical…
I have suffered with clinical massive depression and bi-polar disorder for 30 years plus with little or no relief because of severe med resistance. I have a good psychiatrist for the last 18-20 yearsbut prior to him had a virtual nightmare of mental health cars with both in and out patient care I am on a disability for this condition. I began Deplin therapy 12-29-09 and am hoping for that elusive period of even manic or somewhat better mental health for an even short period of time as I an still somewhat desperately hoping for a brief relief from this darkness that frankly I am so very tired of fighting. (that was the longest sentence in history!) I hope and pray for myself and all of us that rail against this condition...peace. Hope that the Delpin will not be yet another empty hope.

I take Prestiq 50 mg. Last year I began taking Deplin with the Prestiq. I am not sure how, but I feel less angry; I feel happier. Also, I have not been sick at all. I have had no flu or even a cold in the past year. I was wondering if I should just take Deplin by itself?
