Gastrografin

I had a gastro grafin enema done because I am having a colostomy reversed. It was not as people said it would be. It was not comfortable by then why would it be. The only problem I have is that I itch really bad. I could scratch all day and night and it still will not help. But other then that , things went well.

Drank 3 glasses of Gastrografin mixed with Orange Tang after fasting and before CT scan.  First glass was OK, second glass distasteful, third glass repulsive.  So much sugar I was shaking.  Except for mild headache everything OK until 90 minutes after CT, now complete diarrhea.  Hopefully it will go away soon.

I just had a CAT scan and had to drink this awful stuff which just gave me much diarrhea.  I have drank lots of water but the doctors should warn us about other possible side effects besides the diarrhea. Which obviously causing pain and uncomfortable rectum.  I have bad asthma and I just read if you have asthma there are other side effects that are life threatening.  I did not want to have this cat scan in the first place.

Actually I just had a GI CT where this was used and I made it through the test, but literally I had time enough to get dressed get into my car and drive literally out of the parking lot and into the parking lot of the business next door when severe diarrhea hit.  It was like all everything I drank came out my rectum.  Thank God I made it to the rest room of the business.  5 minutes later the same thing, 10 minutes later same thing 15 minutes after that same thing.  Finally when my trips to the restroom were almost an hour apart, I knew I could make it home.  I was ill the rest of the day, night and part of the next morning before stuff stayed where I put it.  Anything I drank went straight through me.  I think this would be greater than any colonoscopy prep made.  The sad thing was someone should have prepared me if possible and had me stay there to see if there would be a reaction.  It started maybe an hour after the last glass was finished.

Whom ever is giving you this information is ignorant. I have been in Radiology over 40 years and have NEVER seen any Gastrografin reactions. Especially disturbing is the claim in Report 5157837-3 that this product was administered IV. That just did not happen as it is an oral contrast ONLY. It might be best that you have a qualified radiologist screen these reports for probability and accuracy before you release them!
