Januvia

I have been taking Januvia since October 2011. My hair is falling out to the point that whenever I comb it I have to sweep the bathroom floor. Slow bowel movements in that I am never emptied, even after attempting to go several times a day. Puffy, watery eyes that constantly drain. Lack of sleep and insomnia.
Joints that ache. I had begun to lose wait before taking this medication and was beginning to fell like my old self. I had started cooking most of my food in a wok. I now fell horrible. Stopped taking the Januvia 1-23-12 and I have a doctors appointment next week.

Was OK with Januvia for awhile. After about 4 or 5 months, now for about a month, I have twice gone through what I told myself was bouts of the 48 hour bug where I had a painfully bloated stomach which brought on forced vomiting and fever and a blood sugar level of around 175.

I had earlier also gone through a 5-day sprint of what an ex-nurse could only describe as a urinary track infection, which ended as quickly as it began the 6th day, when I finally decided to call up the Doctor about it. So, of course, I never made the call. Stupid me.

I have also lost my appetite and a great deal of my desire for sex, no matter how I force myself.

I take quite a number of different medications, but was put on Januvia because Metformin was playing tricks with my Kidneys. However, my life was in much better shape, at least my quality of life, before I was given this drug. Of course, I can't complain too much yet. I've only just today discovered all these side effects are caused by this newest drug to my arsenal. Now I just have to talk to the doc.

Started taking Januvia nearly 2 months ago. Suffer from constipation, nasal congestion, pale face, puffy eyes, itchy legs, swollen ankles and really bad bouts of deppression. :'(

I have been on Januvia since mid February, It started out good, but then became very constipated, Headaches, Fluid build up under eyes, Don't look like myself. The only good Diabetic drug that I have found is Advandia.

I have been onto Januvia for the last year and half and have been experiencing severe diarrohea and severe cramps.  Doctors say that it is not related.  At one stage, I thought that I had bowel cancel and had to get a scope done.  Thank God all was clear.  I was told to increase my fibre, diet and water intake.  I have done all 3 but I am still having this severe diarrohea which is a nightmare.  I have been reading the side effects of the drug and could not find anything to do with constipation.  I will now be asking my Doctor to take me off this drug as I have been through hell for the last 16 months.  I had been taking 4 glucophage tablets a day and had been experiencing severe diarrohea with that drug.  Doctors reduced same down to 2 tables and introduced me to Januvia.  I thought that the glucophage had done so much damage to my bowel that it would take time to get back to normal, but after 16 months, I have now decided that it is down to Januvia.

Both my husband and father n law have been having issues with constipation since starting januvia.  Have been doing research on the subject and cannot find anything. 

The januvia has effected my sex drive is that normal?

Taking Januva for 6 months.  Started getting heart palpitations steadly became worse.  Stopped the Januva and the 2nd day all symptoms were gone. I expect that this drug will have legal problems inthe future.

I have been on Januvia for a year now.
Initially I had NO side effects.
Seemed to be working well.
With my last refill (same dosage) I have daily head pain - vascular in nature - intense at times
has anyone else experienced this type of pain - it is in the back of my head - not like a sinus headache.

I have been taking Januvia for the past month and I think I am going to have to give it up. It works nicely for controlling my blood sugars, but the side effects I am suffering are scaring me. I am having intestine problems, cramping and not feeling like I have a"complete" bowl movement. I stay in the bathroom for 30 minutes at a time, and have to return to the bathroom several times during the day. I do not feel good. I have been all over the internet tring to figure this out and many people that are taking Januvia are having the same symtoms.

After reading all the side effects and coments about januvia it make me think if this medicine it is not more dangerous than the sicknes, most of all the people that take januvia end up in the hospital for the side effects and with more problems other than the diabetis,,, it looks like the cure is worst than the sicknes, today i am starting to eat only soups, y will let people know about my experience.god bless you all

i am 59 years Indian male.  Have been on diabetes medication for the past 14 years. Presently, I am on gliclazide 80 mg and metformin 500mg twice a day and Januvia 100 mg OD.  This combination was prescribed in Sept 2009.  Since then my blood sugar and A1C levels are quite normal.  More recently, I feel a little more hungry than earlier, but otherwise normal.  Previously I had pioglitazone twice daily, but I developed edema of my ankles and so I was taken of and put on the medication described above which so far shown good result.  My height is 5 ft 6 in and weight 64 kg, more or less constant.

Oh! I too have night sweats and severe muscle pain. The only change in my life style is Januvia. I will go off Januvia and shift to Lantus Insulin next week and then I will let you know the results.

At present, life is miserable. The pain could be due to some serious undelying cause or it could be just Januvia. Let me see. If it is Januvia I am going to ask the drug Company why they want to mess up our lives.

I take Januvia 100 mg at night after dinner and Diamicron XR 60 after breakfast. My sugar levels seemed controlled in the beginning now my fasting blood sugar is going higher day  by day in spite of a strict diet.

Since taking Januvia, I have developed severe pain and stiffness on eithere side of my spine  at the level of  my diaphragm which becomes severe if I lie down. It makes sleep a nightmare. The symptoms are reduced with brufen.

Could it be that my spine is inflamed? I have had 3 abdominal surgeries, 2 of them with epidural anestaesia. Two surgeries were with vertical incisions running from my belly buuton down to my pubic area and the last with a horizontal incision. I have weak stomach muscles after the last surgery.

I have read that Januvia suppresses the natural body chemicals which suppress inflammation. I think I would go off Januvia. I think Insulin might be the best option as Januvia messes with our liver.

My glucose levels are increasing despite carefully monitoring my diet.  I switched from Metformen twice a day to Januvia 100mg once a day i the am.  Within a month my glucose levels were so high I began adding one metformin in the evenings.  My doctor wants me to try not to take the metformin, but I'm having dizziness and high glucose levels.  Urine is normal looking, not clear.  One of the reasons I added the Metformin was to decrease my appetite.  Any clue what the dizziness is all about? 

My mother has been taking Januvia for a while now. She drinks so many glasses of water a day and always has had clear urine. Lately, even when she drinks several glasses of water, she has described her urine as being very dirty looking and cloudy and painful. This might be indicative of renal disease due to Januvia.  My mother wants to live long enough to see me graduate from medical school and be a doctor, to see me get married, etc. This is a dangerous drug, and due to its bad effects on my mother, it has gotten our whole family concerned as a whole. If this medicine can cause a risk of renal failure, why in the world is it being administered? Do you simply put this  dangerous life threatening drug on the market which could possible kill people in order to make money?This drug should have been tested more, etc, and improved more before it went out to the public. This is the irresponsibility of the drug company. So many people have been affected. Can you reverse the damage? Can any amount of compensation replace a person's life? NO! My poor mother wanted simply to be treated, yet now she is showing signs of renal failure. If anything happens to her, I will take action.

Tried Januvia.  Loved it.  Brought my BS to normal limits immediately, where Glucophage just couldn't get me there on its own.  After three or four months my muscles tightened up severely.  Had to start using a cane to walk.  Progressed to having to drag myself around with a walker.  No fun.  Detective work told me Januvia was the last pill I had been put on, so must be Januvia.  Went off it.  Relief from the first day off.  Took ten days before I was walking normally again.  Very obvious it was the Januvia.  Stayed off til my next doctor visit.  Doc said it may have been a coincidence, so please try again.  Which I did.  Now after another couple of months I am back to severe muscle pain, which a combo of Vicodin and Aspirins hardly touches.  So I am taking myself off for good, no matter what the doc says.  My BS will just have to be a little higher, unless I can force myself to live exclusively on meat and veggies.

On Januvia for 5 months and had multiple symptoms to the drug - stopped one month ago and how A1c is 9.7% and blood sugars in the 300's.  Is it possible that the Januvia has thrown my pancreas into nonworking state all together??

My fasting sugar level was 154 mg/dL and post-prandial was 151 mg/dl with medication: 2mg/ Glimipiride 1-0-1, Metformin 500 mg 0-1-2, Voglibose 0.3 mg 0-1-1. With the aim of lowering blood sugar level to below 120 mg/dl medication changed to Omission of Metformin and Voglibose and addition of Januvis 100mg pre lunch. After 4 weeks of the new regimen, surprisingly fasting sugar has gone upto 270 mg/dl and post-prandial sugar 350 mg/dl. Considerin going back to old regimen or starting insulin injection. Would appreciate to know if anyone has had similar experience.

My father tried Januvia recently and complained of stomach pain, headache and suicidal thoughts.  Needless to say, he stopped the medication after 2 days of use but is still distrubed by the thoughts he had.   I came here to see if others had similar experiences...?

Addition- I was hospitalized in Bermuda, March 20 - 25/10, after spending evening of 19th.,  in E.R. with B.G. 448. Hydrated with N/Saline. Insulin commenced.  Hyzaar D/C because of Diuretic. All tests neg., so far!   LFT's okay now!   Now on Enalapril 10mg O.D., Zantac 150mg. B.D., & Codeine 30mg q8h, prn.  Only taking it  once or twice a day.  When I took Codeine T.I.D., Diarrhoea stopped for 27 hrs, but I felt bad, with Headache, Abdominal pain, distension and flatulence.  Tried one dose of Metamucil at a Dr.'s advice.  It went straight through me,  as soon as I finished drinking it!  Peristalsis starts after I eat and drink, sometimes immediately,  other times later!  I am taking a Low Residue Diet.  I take Multivitamins. Loose Stools/Diarrhea continues - 28/3/10.

An addition to Frances Wedderburn's side effects from Januvia, some of my Liver Enzymes became elevated.  They decreased  when checked 10 days after stopping Januvia.  Diarrhoea continues

COMMENED JANUVIA 100mg. O.D. on Jan. 14/10.  I was already on Metformin 500mg. BD and Glucotrol XL 10mg BD.   Struck my hips and bruised the left one and  Hurt  my ribs,  almost falling on some steps.    Next week after sitting up for several hrs. to sleep each night, on 21/1/10 felt Abscess on inner aspect of Left Buttock.   Ist abscess!!  Aware of Headaches  and  upper abdominal pain from 27-28/2/10.   Abdo. pain and Headaches came a few hrs. after eating.  Loose Stools and Diarrhoea  commenced on wed. Mar.3/10 and continue 'til today.  Blood glucose went down, but I took the last dose of Januvia on Sun. 7/10.

I started taking Januvia on 11/l8/09...on ll/24/09 my eyes started to constantly blink, like I had
an allergy. Thinking it was an allergy, I cleaned my home,vacumed cleaned out our air ducts & vents in our home. Nothing...finally my optometrist inserted PLUGS in my eyes...believing they would increase the tears in my eyes...and relieve the constant blinking.A week after the plugs,
I started having bloody mucus from my nose....and feeling like my head would burst, it felt like my
throat was closing up...similar to having a bad sore throat...could not sleep, kept drinking warm
water..to soothe my throat...and kept on having constant mucos with blood ...coughing...my eyes
are now watery....Getting off this drug..and trying another...I reported this info to the FDA...

I have been on Januvia for 2 years...It has worked very good for me at lowering my sugar, I take 50mg of Januvia once a day plus 1000mg metformin....Recently i had to go to the local ER for Heart Palpatations everything checked out fine but they scheduled me with a Cardiologist...Since returning from the ER i decided to check out the side effects of each of my meds...When i started reading all the side effects that people were listing on the Januvia i was SHOCKED most of them i have...problems sleeping through the night, Muscle and joint aches..hot flashes, Racing heart, Palpatations, night sweats...swollen fingers.....This has all really scared me and i will discuss it with my Cardiologist...Like i said it works really good at lowering my sugar but is it worth it????
