Marie, 1500mg is a bit much in my opinion. My husband's doctor and I decided to decrease his doseage to 500mg a day. The plus side of dropping the dosage is he would be more alert and be able to function. The negative side of dropping the dosage would be the chance of another seizure. I made the decsion to drop it. He is now on 500mg a day, and has gotten back to his normal routines, such as transferring, staying awake, etc. He has also started back on his physcial/occupation/speech therapy's. All of this came back after just 1 week of the lowered dosage. I'm going to play it by ear, and consider even dropping it more. I get the feeling that the longer a person is on it, the more likely they are to have a seizure when it is stopped completely, and that in it's self, scares the hell out of me. I will keep you posted on his progress. But you should talk with doctor about dropping the dosage, I would if I were you.

Wow! my mom just had a stroke and was put on Keppra. She had a seizure before the stroke and then another small seizure while in the hospital. They put her on 1500mg twice a day! That is the highest possible dose. After ONE seizure? She can't take care of herself at all! So many issues are popping up that she never had before! Incontinence, Heart Problems, Breathing Problems and terrible Depression! My mom is in a nursing home because she can't stay awake long enough to function. We are going to the doctors in the nursing home and pleading with him to wean her off of this terrible medication that some other doctor has given her. I hope this post helps. I was searching for info on this today and I came across your post. Please let me know how it all works out. I know some people say they can function and get relief from the side effects after awhile but not in my mom's case. Maybe it has to do with age?

My husband had a stoke in April 2011. On August 27, 2011, he had a "seizure" was taken to the ER. The ER doc, called the neurologist who last saw in April, and said to give him Keppra. For 5 days he was given 500mg twice a day. Before this medication, my husband could transfer himself from bed to wheelchair, had a "happy go lucky" attitude and was being evaluated to come to home. Since starting this medicine, he can not stay awake long enough to even to eat. Can not transfer himself anymore, not eating, some irratibility, and glazed over eyes. We have decided to decrease his dose's and hope he comes back to some normality. Does any know of anyelse who is taking Keppra after a stroke for seizure's???

My 15 year old son started Keppra 500 mg. twice a day. He has been taking it for 4 days. He is doing OK but he normally never is sick or takes any medication. I have a son that has almost fully recovered from Autism by doing the gluten and casein free diet and supplements. He takes supplements under a doctors supervision.

Being on Keppra for 4 days we have noticed the following:

1. tired but getting better
2. gets a little bit upset over stupid things (he is never like this)
3. has been noticing some pain in his left eye, left jaw (popping while eating) and last
night had some pain in his left rib that comes and goes.

The doctors wants to start this Friday increasing his dosage 500 mg. in the evening and working up to 3000 mg. a day. He would take 1500 in the am and 1500 in the pm. We are to increase it slowly every two weeks. How do you know if this is to much? I am so scared with medicine and need help. He is 5.8" and weight is 142 pounds.

My 7 year old has been on Keppra for one year. she takes 700 mls three times a day. It is working well but the mood shifts were incredible. We started giving her, by her doctors recomendation, Vitamin B6, she takes 200mls twice a day. That seems to have gotten the rotten additude under control.

In 2009 I moved from Epilim to Keppra over a 4 and half month period. This was due to wanting to concieve a baby and I was informed by my neurologist Keppra was a safer drug for trying this ( not to say it doesnt have risks). The change over went smoothly and I have had no side effects taking Keppra. My dosage might be classed as quite low (only 500mg twice daily) but it did not make me feel any different. Vickie

I am now 38 weeks pregnant and I have been on 5mg of Folic Acid to take alongside my Keppra (I am on 500mg of Keppra twice daily) from the start of pregnancy. My neurologist recommended the higher dosage as epileptic drugs can block the benefits of taking folic acid. 1mg is still higher than the folic acid you can buy in a supermarket yourself but you might want to clarify this with your doctor/neurologist.

3 years old and just started

A friend of me was put on Keppra in hospital. Before he could walk and was able to care for himself. He went to hospital to accompany his wife due to her chemotreatment.
After one month on keppra high dose and sleepmedication(what he didn't need at all) he had no appetite anymore and couldn't eat or drink at all. That's when I found him and had to feed him.
He even did'nt get water infusion in time and got kidney complications after one week of dehydration. Finally the staff stopped keppra and the sleep medication as the family wished, and the friend (82) recovered and awoke.
After one week however a new docter treated him and he became dizzy, sleepy all the time.
again.Only after 1O days I could obtain the keppra he got and show it to his family who immediately asked the docter to stop keppra as this was agreed on. It seemed a computer mistake. It was high time as the friend could hardly eat anymore and became very dizzy and weak. Sitting and sleeping all day and bearing the consequences of too much medication, dehydration and malnutrition.

I am 10 weeks pregnant I was given a perscription of 1mg of folic acid is my keppra blocking that should i be worried?

I am having sever memory prolems. I cannot remember what I did five minutes ago.

was on epanutin and tegretol. Was taken off the epanutin now on tegreltol and keppra cant see alot of difference now the meds have changed sezures almost same as to as before except for some side effects may be due to keppra slight joint aches skin irritation odor that bowels not that great .

my daughter has been taking levitracetam for the past year.... in the beginning it was literally hell she went from being a sweet girl who never had any temper issues to being this mean little lady that would spit in my face. i think i creid for the first month she was on it. But eventually after that first month the seizure were completely under control and she would only have one when it was time for a dose change (ie: growth spurts etc.) and then the attitude issues would come back for one day and be gone again just like that, i have noticed the getting upset about minor things and her being aggrevated during the periods of the dose changes. but small price to pay to avoid full on grand mall seizures.

I only took Keppra xr 1 time and it was enough for me to know this isnt for me! I was falling all over the place, serious headache and 2 days later I am still trying to loose the anger and hold my tongue! I am not epiliptic, I had brain surgery for tumor removal and ended up having seizures as a result. I cant imagine this medicine helping anyone, I'd rather have the seizures.

I was very irritable.   I saw my husband as a threat.

Hit the back of my head on concrete after slipping on ice. Had a full blown seizure 7 days later. This was Feb. 2010 as a procaution they put me on kappra twice a day for year. I do not like it it makes me feel like im not always in control i say and react knowing its wrong and am sad when i have done it, hurting the ones i love. i feel like i am in a daze somethimes. I cant wait to get off these things, iused to be a layed back easy going person now everything seems to get on my nerves, my temper is short, IT'S not the person i am i want me back, the real me the one i know.

I have Bipolar 1 disorder.  God knows why they gave me this drug but it nearly killed me.   I went completly insane got comited to a Mental Hospital and now face bancrupcy from medicl bills.  My last time in hospital was in 2005 and that was volunterry.  I have nver experienced anything like it in my life.  It was terrifiying.  DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG!    I was doing well, had a job etc  .  I am still deeply affected by that experience in April and only ust starting to recover mentally and physically.  I also lost 20lb rapidly.  Be safe   God Bless  Carol

m3 yr old son takes keppra..his personality is completely changed...

been taking keppra for few months now and boy has ther been changes. my wife to be says that i am not the same person and she wants the old me back!! grumpy bad moods,depression no go!,no sleep,taking these blank outs regular since startd keppra and sleep seizures more frequint when they had been taken care of for years with other med. i just feel like crap

My 9 year old seems to be very differnt. This is his first day on 250 keppra. Is ir really worth this?

I need help! I have been on epilepsie medications since i was 2 yers old. I am now 26. I have been using alot of different medication in teh past years. The last 2 yeas I have been using Kepprah and its drivimg me insane! I am soo deperate to get off it I'd rather not use anything then use kepprah. I have recently got married 2 years ago and all the side affects has realy taken toll on my new married life. I am constantly tired, weak, irritated, crying abt nothing, paranoid, nervous, drooping things that i hold in my hands, drastical moodswing and get very very depressed, so depressed that i can't make any disicions for myself anymore. Plus i have been stuggeling with sinus infections since being on Kepprah.  I am too scared to use any other meds because i heard that Kepptah is the only one that works with birthcontrol pills. In teh past as i grew up i have been on Lamicton, Epilim, Tegratol but those also had side affects altough none of them as bad as Kepprah.  Any advice of what I should do? I am DESPERATE!

Can just anyone i.e. lpn, rn proscribe Keppra?

My daughter is two years old and has been on Keppra since she was 15mo. Shortly after starting on it her WBC was noted to be slighly low...since then is has continued to drop...In december it was discoverd she is Amemic as well and as of yesterday we were told that her WBC and RBC was very low and that her Sed Rate is Elevated. The doctors can not find the cause....this all started after she started on the Keppra has any had this kind of effect from the drug or can tell me where to look for more information on the effect of keppra on Children?

I've only been on Keppra 3 days, but have literally been in bed most of the time due to nausea. Has anyone else felt like this?
