post D&C Methergine administered parenterally. ( dont know if it was IM or IV) but I experienced the most terrible pain in my lifetime. uterine cramping and pain in both legs thigh downwards. Post surgery I was rolling in pain in the recovery.
The nurse was alarmed by my pain, so was the junior doctor (duty). No pain killers gave relief - naturally. Did not realize it was Methergine causing all the pain till later the anaesthetist came to meet me and explained the probable cause of such terrible pain. Though she mentioned such an agony was unusual. Pain subsided after about 2 or 3 hours
I was told to continue oral tablets of Methergine for the following week but thankfully it did not cause such severe pain

  • i think i should also mention…

i think i should also mention that i hemorrhaged with my first csection...my second csection, no hemorrhaging, but my baby died of hyaline membrane disease...i was so fatigued/disoriented from the methergine that it was difficult for me to make decisions and insist that he be transferred to a neonatal unit. it was new years eve w no ambulance available to transport, the pediatrician was drunk...just a whole cluster of unfortunate events, leading to my baby's death...

  • at the end of my first Csection,…

at the end of my first Csection, I was wide awake until they gave me methergine...i was suddenly very nauseous, then passed out for a few hours.  i had 3 more c-sections with same immediate reaction to the methergine, only each time my "coma" lasted longer and longer...the 4th c-section had me in the recovery room until it closed and i was groggy all that night, into the next day. my frustration was that, each time, i kep t telling the anesthesiologist/my OB doc that this medicine was affecting me this way...but they kept ignoringme.  finally, my 5th csection, i finally got up the gumption to INSIST that they not give that med to me and i signed papers releasing them from liability.  it was like magic...i was awake/alert after the csection for the first time...it was wonderful...i didn't feel at all tired afterward and my recoveryfrom my csection was so much easier...i had felt so fatigued and mentally slowed for weeks afterward.

  • I suffered a missed miscarriage…

I suffered a missed miscarriage at 10 weeks. About 3 weeks later, the day before my scheduled d&c, I woke up at 3am and began bleeding severely (sorry if this is TMI, but the blood was coming out a fast as if I was urinating. Very scary). The next day my doctor said that I had passed most of the products of conception and wouldn't need my scheduled surgery, but she perscribed methergine to help fully contract my uterus. It was 4 doses of the .2mg pink pills
I took the first 2 doses without much effect, maybe a little cramping, but nothing alarming. On the second day I took the 3rd dose at 7am. By 9:30 am I was having pretty severe uterine contractions that progressed into what I can only describe as hard "childbirth" labor. I've never been in so much pain in my life. I feel that generally I have a pretty high tolerence for pain, but this was my absolute threshhold. At the height of it the contractions came about 10 seconds apart, lasted for 40 or 50 seconds, and I'm amazed that I didn't pass out from the pain. The whole episode lasted about 4 hours.
It caused a bit more heavy bleeding, and I passed a litle more tissue, but I don't think my reaction to the drug was typical- I can't imagine my doctor would prescribe this drug without warning me what might happen if this was a common reaction.
My advice is if you're prescribed methergine, ask your doctor for percocet or oxycodone or morphine with it, just in case, and plan to be home with no other obligations until you've finished the course of treatment. Needless to say I didn't dare take the 4th dose.
    Good luck!

Okay so post tubal ligation--I had a lot of bleeding...finally ended up in the emergency room, a little anemic and tired. They gave me a shot of methergine...I was sent home, where I fell asleep. I had the most vivid crazy dreams-like taking a trip to toon town. I woke up after hearing what sounded likea baby belly laughing to all kinds of happy noises and things fluttering around the house....I called the Emergency Room back--they did not have a lot to say....but the bleeding did stop for a while
