Mirena

I had my IUD placed 5wks after i had my daughter may 2010. After it was placed my OB did a ultrasound to make sure it was in place. It had turned completley sideways. I was told to come back in a wk ( my dr wanted to see if it would turn on its own). I went back and the first one was removed and second on placed w/out any problems. After having it in a for a couple months I went back to my OB to make sure it was still in place and everything was ok. I told my OB that i had absolutely NO sex drive. The OB brushed it off and laughed. Well, after having this thing in for over a year...I want this thing out!! I am tired ALL the time, my legs ache alot, my hips hurt, no sex drive (which makes major problems with he hubby), i have a period that last up to 12 days and then comes back after a wk, and random severe abd pain! I researched the Mirena before having it placed. At that time the list of possible side effects werent as long as it is now and i found very few complaints. Now if you research Mirena, you find tons of complaints. I think that when us women were complaining after having this thing placed, we were brushed off and told it wasnt the IUD b/c this was their new money maker! I've got to get this freakin nightmare removed!!

I went in after I had the thing removed, and sure enough, I have multiple cyst on both of my ovaries. I too will need IVF. I had 2 other children prior to this thing, and both were healthy, and full term babies. Now...... I cant get pregnant. I feel your pain. I got this thing out to have another baby, and now, broken hearts. :(

I also have ringing in my left ear i have tried every ear drop the doctors have prescribed me and its just not going away! Thought i would check out to see if it has happened to anyone else with the mirena i have only had it for 3 weeks and my ear has been ringing for nearly a week n a half! Also get very dizzy and nauseated and have abdominal pains!!

I have had the marina for 3 years, since that time my normally clear skin went mental, massive mood swings, i became so violent i knocked my boyfriends tooth out, i have never been violent in my life, my normally very low blood pressure is now so high that the Dr wants to put me on blood pressure medication, i eat reasonably well and exercise 5 times a week yet i have gained nearly 6 kilos... im over it, and am having it removed today....

I have only just discovered all the information out there on the i-net relating to Mirena. I read all the pamphlets the dr gave me regarding the implant before I had it put in, I just did not do enough research about actual stories from real people. 2 dr's I discussed it with brushed over the side effects & as they all sounded much like any potential side effects of various birth control methods I did not think to investigate further. I didn't think much of it, had a couple of friends who had used it, had a family member who had used it & hadn't heard anything horrible. So.....fast forward 4 months, I have honestly felt like I was going mad. Massive mood swings, poor husband hasn't known which wife he will have yelling at him or not, or possibly crying at the drop of a hat....massive weight gain & it just isn't stopping regardless of level of exercise or eating good. I was recommended to try Mirena cos it was supposed to help my hormonal headaches I had each month at TTOM - well I have had the worst migraines since being on Mirena. I've never had migraines before, I am debilitated for 2-3 days each month & cannot go to work, they make me nauseated, no drugs no matter how strong help get rid of the migraines!!! I have had the worst depression, I had the blues once before years ago and know how bad it can be, this has been worse because I did not have a reason I should be feeling this way - I didn't know it could be related to Mirena. There have been times I could have ended it all. I thought it was related to my job, my life, my recent move - nope, now I've done some research I believe it's all Mirena related. I just called the dr today to get it out next week, Tuesday is my appointment and I can't wait to be ME again! :)

I have blotchy skin as well, and just began to wonder if it was related to the mirena. It almost looks like a tan, but its blotchy. The skin on my neck is much lighter. Is there anything that can be done????

hello there my name is carissa i have a 1 1/2 year old boy and since day one i have hated this thing i call it my monster beacuse thats what it makes me, i mean i dont ever want to have sex and i have all the other things you ladys have with the back pains ansd the tummy pains i cant get out of bed in the morning i feel like im stuck and all the ladys at work tell me that im to yung for the pains that i have after 4 months of having this monster put in i had the worst of the worst head akes thewy made me throw up they were so bad i want to get this taken out but my hunnie told me that im crazy and to keep it in ahhhhhhhhhh im going to the dr friday and hopefully he can help me. im going beacuse of the other bad thing yeast infections ahhh i have had them ever since i got this put in and they never go away

I had the Mirena since March of 2011 and it's been a nightmare. Prior to Mirena I used Yaz for Ortho-tricylen and Yaz for a total of about six years before I took a break for a year and a half. So after the insertion, I dealt with the spotting for about a month. I constantly would get bad cramping on my left side that would have me in tears before and during my menstruation. So I went to my gyn about the cramping and she checked to make sure it was in place and it was. She just told me it's expected but because I showed concern of possible cysts. She ordered me an ultrasound and it was discovered I had 3 small fibroids and the IUD will help eliminate them. Since then I still have cramping, spotting, period gone from 5 days to 12 days, low sex drive, extreme migraines, weight gain, mood swings, depression, leg tingling and leg cramps. I'm always tired. I'm plan to have it removed because now I feel a hard lump under my skin between my thigh and vagina.

I had the mirena for almost 3yrs and never thought anything of it untill i read all these post. I have had bad headaches as well as back pain and not to forget weight gain. I have also had severe dysplagia and i had to get a cone biopsy and d&c thy put a new IUD in during my surgery and ive been having bad cramps my back is always hurting. I never thought the mirena was to blame but it seems clear that it is!! my sex drive is low i feel depressed all the time think its time to take it out.
Anyone know of any other form of birth control???

I will try to make this as short as I can, as I could write you all a BOOK on the problems I have been dealing with after getting Mirena put in. After 2 years and 7 months, this thing is still hell for me. I have Endometriosis stage 4 and Mirena was supposed to help slow my periods resulting in less pain for me. Yes I now have lighter periods but they are now 10 days long rather than 5, and my cramps have actually gotten WORSE. I seriously have almost every single negative side effect you can possibly have from this thing! Yes I have severe Endo but before I had Mirena, I never had sharp stabbing pains so bad that they have almost brought me to the floor, with NO warning might I add! In 24yrs, I have never had skin problems what-so-ever and I now have the worst acne on my face that nothing I have tried will even somewhat relieve it, there is NO sex drive at all for me anymore, I swear I am slowly slipping more into depression every day with this thing, I get lower back pain for no reason at all, and since about the 3rd month after insertion I have had to wear liners every single day because of the small discharge that will not stop!! I feel the only side effect I have not had is the weight gain. I actually started going to the gym the same year that it was inserted and lost 25lbs, but it still doesnt make up for everything else that I have had to deal with. This thing should be BANNED, and I am surprised there are not lawsuits all over TV about it already!! I wish I would have researched the effects for myself before getting it, as my doctor, then and even now, will not agree that my problems are because of Mirena!! I wish I never would have done this to my body and in October when my husband starts our new insurance plan, I WILL be getting it removed!!!!

I had the mirena put in 3 years ago and since then my body hasn't been the same everything from cystic acne to back pain and now I have on breast that is largee than the other and noticable and I feel like I am having a period for three out of four weeks. Since the mirena was put in due to heavy periods and fibroids, I have had really sore muscles and ligaments. Especially upon waking. I did a couple of push ups and now have tendonitis. When I get up in the morning, it feels like lactic acid and like I've gone for a marathon in my sleep. It takes abit to get moving but I feel like an old woman and it wasn't happening before. Has anyone experienced this? Want to get it removed but unsure of the alternatives.

I got my Mirena in November of 2010 I have had nothing but problems since. I have had hives and 2 bacterial infections. I seems like every time I have problems I can't get into a doctor until things are really bad. Girls don't get this. I was not informed of these side effects and If I was I would have never got this put in.

I had the mirena place back in 2006 about 2 months after my son was born. I was a very health and fertile 19 year old at the time. I left mirena in for 2 years and had many of the side affects i am seeing in the other blogs headaches, depression, pain, weight gain. But the biggest problems were to come. I had it removed in 2008 in hopes of having another baby. That did not happen. My husband and I have been trying for 3 years and have nothing. My OB/GYN at the time took it out and said everything looked great for 2 years and still no baby. We have since gone to a new OB/GYN and she ran a lot of test and saw fluid in my tubs. I have now gone to a specialist and have been told I have Hydrosalpinx. Toxic fluid in my tubes cause by some type of infection. Which by the way one of mirena side affects is infections. I am 24 years old and can NEVER have kids without IVF. I have spent a lot of money going to doctors and now have to possible spend 10,000 or more to TRY and MAYBE have another child. I souly blame mirena for all my heartache and well tell everyone i know NEVER to get one placed. :'(

Since using mirena. My nipples hurt my breasts hurt and I have severe pain sometimes after sex or during and its also in my lower back and anus too....why? :(

I had mirena insected about 6 weeks after my second child. This thing is a nightmare!! Since then I have had severe back, hip, and upper leg pain. I didn't think the mirena was to blame at first but my PCP sent me for test after test and nothing. I'm also experiencing headaches, heavy bleeding, mood swings, and I had gained 20 pounds and it seems I can't get the weight off. I called my PCP and made an appointment to have this thing removed.

I had my little boy in january of 2010 i'm only seventeen years old and i got the mirena six weeks after i had my son and ever since have had pelvic pain and gained about twenty two pounds! i've had migranies NO enegery at all. all i i want to do is sleep. i need enegery to take care of my family! i'm calling my doctor tomorrow to get this taken out and look into some other form of birth control.

The first day of implantation, I had no problems.  I was really amazed because of all the negative things that I had heard happening during implantation.  Well, I woke up one morning in a frantic!  My heart was beating rapidly and I felt totally out of control.  It soom calmed down after about 15 minutes.  Later in the week, I started to feel very dizzy and strange.  I went to the emergency room and they did not find anything.  I also went to my OB and explained what was going on but of course they talked me into keeping the mirena and prescribed Zoloft.  I ended up back into the emergency room that same night with severe anxiety, nausea,  and panic attacks.  They found nothing wrong.  I have been to the emergency room four times in the last 5 weeks of having this thing.  They won't remove it so I scheduled an appointment with my OB to get this out ASAP.  I just want to feel normal and happy again.  Oh by the way, my blood pressure is high (something I never had a problem with), allergies out of control, and headaches.  Some of my friends have it and enjoy it, but I don't think this mirena is for me.

I wore twiice Mirena.  The doctor thought it would kelp control the strong bleeding during my periods.  It did exactly the oposite.  I had terrible blood clots discharge the size of my hand and kept discharging clots until on the fifth day i discharged the Mirena in the toilet naturally.  I had this condition for two months and the doctors were very worried for me since I had a terrible anemia after that.
The second time, the doctors again wanted to try Mirena to stop the bleeding and placed another Mirena but it was naturally discharged by my body after a couple of days it was placed inside me.

I have had the worst  cough of my life.  Going to get this thing removed tomorrow!!

I have had problem with just about every other birth control out there.  Usually resulting in migraines that land me in the emerceny room. However my experience with mirena is not any better.  I got it after my second child as a last resort hoping it would work.  After I got it I noticed 15 to 20 pounds weight gain.  I am happy one minute and sad the next for no reason.  I can start crying for absolutely no reason .  I am sad a lot with head aches all the time.  I can't sleep at night due to back pain and I have no energy.  I still get my period and it last for two weeks.  I am sick of not being able to have the energy to not play with my kids.  I have had a severe head ache for the last two weeks straight I have had enough. 

I am quite possitive that Mirena gave me Irritable Bowel Syndrome which is now here to stay with me for the rest of my life. I manage it pretty well by taking a probiotic daily. But that is 30 dollars a month.

Merina put in a week ago after having a D&C…to help the uterine wall lining stay thing, kind of a last hope.

Since the day after surgery she has complained of low abdominal pressure, that wraps around her back.

It doesn’t seem like any of the pain meds help it. She hasn’t been to school in a week, is stressing about all that she has to do.

In the mean time doctor sent us to family doc cause they thought she had the flu(though we knew it wasn’t) it wasn’t, they checked her for

A UTI and it was normal….I am exhausted and stressed as is she, can’t figure this out, and really wanted to give it a chance.  There is something wrong.

Any other suggestions.

Omg I thought i was going crazy...i have been having such bad headaches with neck and back pain radiating down into the pelvic region, along with the chest pains. I called my doctor today and shes having me come in tomorrow to take it out. thank God, I am praying for some relief!

i have had gas and stomache cramps....however i think it is best that i personally keep this IUD in b/c the shot i would forget my appointment, the pills i would forget to take it every day, i am too big for the implanon, and i want one more child b4 i get fixed so i am pretty much stuck with it b/c i do not like keeping matentience on BC.

my experience was horrible. 3 days after implanted, woke up in the middle of night my left leg was numb.(pelvis area).fainted on table and vomit 2 times getting inserted in i got it removed the morning of my leg and pelvis  pain pretty bad when it lasted 3 days in me ended up in the emergency i hate mirena and dont suggest it to anyone take it off the market i m not kidding

Hoping to get a period!? Larger breasts?? Wow...terrible side effects.

I also experienced the hyperpigmentation on my face, but it was due to hormone levels after giving birth, however it will never go away. There is a product called Obagi that has worked wonders on me. You have to go to a dermotologist to get it. Sun screen every day and Obagi worked wonders for me. Good luck!

I am finally free of the Mirena, and girls, DON'T be scared to have it taken out because of the Mirena Crash- it's been two weeks, and I haven't experienced that. However, I >have< had the following happen: wierd hair growth is gone, cystic acne mostly gone, dropped 18 lbs. (and more than 2 inches off of my waist) in 2 weeks, emotionally stable again, regaining muscle tone with no added exercise, energy up again, depression gone, no heart palpitations for 2 whole weeks.....I could go on and on! Life has improved immeasurably in the last 2 weeks, and I owe it all to the brave gals who posted their symptoms- thank you, ladies, for sayin' it out loud, or I would've just gone on, miserable, and probably wound up having a second one implanted after the first was taken out. :o)

PPH did not tell me all the side effects, I am experiencing chest pain, mood swings, headaches, bloating, no sex drive, hair loss, irritablity for the 6 weeks I have had it in.  I was perfectly fine before this.
When I was pregnant, my Dr. said I was "progesterone prone" meaning this hormone has major effects on my body.  I shoud have been warned about this before it was inserted.  Now, 6 weeks later I am taking it out so that I can have my life back.

Some women are fine on it, but I wish PPH would have suggested the Copper IUD instead!!!

I have had horrible side effects since I got this thing whichs includes weight gain like 30+ pounds, severe migranes which feels like I have been shot in te head hurting so bad that I had to ask my husband if I had been shot and two 500 mg Tylenol did nothing for even after sleeping all night for 12 hours did it not go away, severe dizziness where I would fall on the ground, constant nausea to the point where i have been dry heaving everyday over the toliet since the insertion, feels like something is in my throat, so I did what any normal person would do and made an appointment to ge this out of me. Well I web to the doctors appointment and they tried to take it out of course it hurt like hell almost like they were Turing my uterus inside out I started crying and told me they cannot get it out and that they were going to have to send me to another hospital with another doctor to get it out because somehow within the 2 months I have had this thing it has now become embedded into my uterus. Do I reccommenD it never! Now my appointment is next week so I hope that they can get it out or I might have to get it surgically removed. I only tell you this becaus I know there are some people who pull Theirs out on there own and I seriously do not recommend that at all! For you could tear your uterus and I know because I considered pulling mine out but never did thank god! But good luck to all you who have it that it works for you.

I have gotten hyperpigmentation (dark spots on my face in three different areas, blotchy, approximately the size of a quarter each) since using Mirena.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Were you able to find a way to make the hyperpigmentation go away?
Other than hyperpigmentation, I love the convenience of Mirena... but the dark spots are no fun.

omg... I have severe diarrehea for almost a week and now blood is coming out (praying its a hemmeroid)   now I read this I have hope  I am so afraid.   Was this reversable by taking out the IUD?

since having the mirena coil fitted in january my skin has looked awful.

I had a mirena for 5 years with no trouble.  In November I had a new one inserted and all seemed well.  The mirena has been a great choice for me because it eliminated all problems I was experiencing due to fibroids.  For the past two weeks, however, I have had really bad cramping, causing lots of back pain.  I have been training to run a half marathon, and now cannot even run 2 miles without the backpain really flaring up.

My question is:  Is it likely the back pain is temporary?  Is there anything I might try to alleviate the back pain?  I really do not want to have it removed because of the firoids.

I had my mirena inserted July 08, Just had the little devil removed 2-25-10, 35 lb. weight gain, bloat, body ache, no periods, no ovulation, sore and enhanced breasts! I will keep you up to date with my post- mirena expericences... still hoping to get a period.. crampy, but nothing yet!

my daughter had same symptoms, Doctors would not listen I went to south african web site found every side effect took it in showed them. It was to late she now has to have brain surgery for a shunt to drain pressure from her brain. after suffering from Pseudotumor celebri, then papilledema

I had the mirena inserted 5 months ago. And 1 week after I got it put in I began having really bad cramps, And I mean like I was doubled over in pain. They hurt soo bad. So 2 months into the pain I went to the doctor, she did an altra sound and discovered cysts on both of my ovaries, which was apparently very common with an IUD or woman in general. So I got percribed an anti-inflamatory and felt better, and the cysts shrunk and dissapeared. Now, everytime I have anything with caffeine which includes, all pop with caffeine & coffee, I get extremely unpleasent cramps in my lower abdoman. At first I thought it could NOT be from drinking caffeine. But than I began tracking it. And It's true. I get really bad pain when I drink caffeine, Has anyone else had this problem?

As of Jan.2010 it will be two years that I have had the mirena! I have had nothing but severe problems since I have had it. I went back and forth numerous of times to the doctors and went to my ogyn complaining of symptoms that I have had. they are: weight gain,blurred vision, severe abdominal pain, pcos,sudden severe chest pain, sudden problems breathing, numbness in arm and leg,depression, memory groginess, severe migraines everyday, painful intercourse, acne problems, and etc. These are just 12 out of 32 symtoms altogether that I have, and thats not counting the side effects I have from polycystic cysts that I have developed from the mirena. I was perfectly healthy before I ever had the mirena inserted, and since then my life has been hell. I am currently waiting on an approval from my health insurance to have it removed a.s.a.p. For something that was suppose to be helpful in preventing pregnancy, has turned out to be a living nightmare on a daily basis and I would NEVER reccomend it to anyone. So if there is anyone considering having the mirena inserted, PLEASE take the time to look up all the pros and cons about it! I sure know it wasnt worth my health! I have all 12 minor side effects listed on another mirena sight, and out of the 24 severe side effects listed as well, I have 24!! Had the Mirena put in a month after giving birth in Dec 08. Bled heavily for 8 months after and had irregular periods since. Went to the urgent care about 6 months after it was put in and was told by the urgent care doctor that it wasn't normal. Called my obgyn and was told that it WAS normal. Went in today 12/4/09 and did an ultrasound-discovered it was incorrectly inserted. They ripped it out and inserted another one. Came home and did research and haven't seen these symptoms, but I've have severe joint pain in my shoulders and tiny bumps appeared all over my body after mirena was put in.

I've had Mirena for 3 yrs, never once had a period, I have seviere cystic acne, migranes, hip bone pain (right side especially, iliac crest) my newest complaint is chronic pelvic pain and very sore nipples. I just had my annual checkup and my OB thinks I may have PCOS. I only weigh 115lbs at 5'4", and most women with PCOS are overweight. I know this is not impossible, but funny how I never had issues until I got Mirena. Mirena was manufactured in hell.

I have been having stomach problems since july of 2008 i had my daughter in june of 08 and got the mirena in july of 08 and never thought it was the problem my symptoms were vomiting, head aches, dizziness, weakness, dehydration ..... every time i went to the doctor they told me i had gastronritis i even when to a stomach speacalist i also got a ultra sound on my gall bladder and nothing! untill i recently thought what if it could be my mirena?>>>.. and thats what i think it is i didnt start having these problems untill a couple of weeks after i got it. I am a medical student know that ive done research why would i even put a foreign body in my body anyway? im getting my mirena out ASAP i made my appointment already i would not recommend this product to anyone im going to get on the shot has any one else had these side effects?
