Mucinex

Is it safe to take Mucinex long-term? I've been taking it twice daily for over a year for Fibrmyalgia as recommended by Dr. St. Amand. I just heard it could be bad for the kidneys...is this true?

I took this pill Mucinex DM only 3 or 4 time for my sickness and one time i really had to pee nothing came out until i drank something to help myself pee. could it be the med preventing me from peeing?

I also needed to add the definite 'jittery' feeling was there, and some anxiety. But the MOST unpleasant aspect was not being able to fall /stay asleep and this attack with my eye every other hour, where I'd rub the life out of it thinking there was a lash stuck somewhere. I even tried flushing and rinsing about 5 or more times now. I also feel as if this thin film of mucus covers my eye, making my vision blurred, which is then followed by the sense of something being lodged in underneath my upper eye-lid. Going through that at 2 or 3 in the morning was NOT a pleasant experience at all!

I took Mucinex D (about four pills so far) and while the breathing was a little better, I mostly notice that I still have quite a bit of stuffiness and now feel that it's all dried up, where I can't blow it out. I thought that this was supposed to loosen phlegm /mucus making it easier to expel from system??? I also experienced a sensation of something being lodged deep in my upper eye lid, and have NOT been able to sleep properly at all while taking this (particularly if taken at a late hour) It is now 2 AM and I' feel like I'm still feeling pretty wired. ALL these side effects should DEFINITELY be included in the box. The fact that it's NOT included does make me wonder quite a bit???

Took Mucinex Fast-Max liquid cold and sinus. It immediately helped clear out my sinus problem, but I started to see blood in the mucus. The second day I had a full on bloody nose that was fairly severe. Day three the bleeding became extremely severe. My wife called Mucinex and they told her it was a rare but not unheard of side effect, told me to stop taking the medication and are sending a refund. Too bad for the side effect, because the medicine did work other than that.

I took mucinex max strenght for cold and cough for at least 3 days: then I started having headache, dizziness , palpitations and high blood pressure. Scary ... I ended in ER bec of the high bp... this is a very dangerous OTC drug and reading other peoples experiences w/ mucinex side effects ...something has to be done about this.... my symptoms lasted for a few days.

I took Mucinex DM maximum strenth. BIG Mistake! About 10 hours later I felt like I was going to pass out. I was nauseated and dizzy. My pupils were extremely dilated. I was actually in my car on my way to work (as an ER Nurse) when this occured. I went to work and was hooked up to a cardiac monitor. My heart rate was in the 140's. NEVER EVER AGAIN!!

Also, if you have found any solutions, PLEASE don't hesitate to share them.. I would so appreciate it. Very much.

Is there anybody out there that hasn't felt the same since they took Mucinex DM?? Like for months afterward? What symptoms do you have? Please if you could help that would be great. I'm still not sure that my physical problems are a cause of taking it back in January, but it seems a bit odd that I haven't felt the same since I took it.. I still wonder about it, even though the docs kept saying it wasn't because of it..

I don't know of any way to help you, but what other side effects did you have? Is it still going on? I'm not quite sure that all of the way I feel is because of taking mucinex, but I haven't felt the same since I took it back in January.

I've had a bad cold for a week and saw doctor, the expectorant he prescribed was out of stock so the pharmacist gave me Mucinex. I felt awful all day today and hadn't eaten anything. I took a pill on an empty stomach with water and felt good pretty quickly. About 3 hours later I came down with uncontrollable diarrhea. It was so bad I decided to take a shower, while in the shower I lost control 2 more times, I managed to get out in time the 3rd time. I lost so much fluid so quickly I felt faint and got a headache. I just went again a few minutes ago and when I wiped, there was no color.
I have felt no pain, and there is no smell; I'm dumping water at this point. I'm also urinating during these episodes and that burns.

If my reaction were any more severe, I think it would be life threatening. Then again, I'm in currently in the middle of the reaction, I may be Mucinex's first official fatality.

Do these companies even test this stuff?

disoriented, dilated pupils, blurred vision, drooped left eye lid and swelling, numbness all left side of face, loss of appetite, itching, feels like I have a piece of small particle in left eye, left eye waters when reading or any use, fatigue/tired, headaches, extreme dryness in throat, cough attacks, loss of sense and smell. Not to mention discomfort while trying to work, and my daily activities are on hold for who knows how long... This is POISON NO DOUBT!

After reading the reviews online, I will be returning the mucinex DMV I just bought. I'm glad I read the reviews before taking one, I'm not a fan of medication anyways, so I'll just deal with the cough..

Took two mucinex before going to bed. Woke up three hours later and rose to go the restroom. I didn't make it very far without almost fainting. I sat down and within seconds felt like my whole body was on fire. I started to have an almost out of body experience. My muscles became so constricted I could hardly open my mouth to talk. I thought maybe I was going paralyzed yet I was shaking violently. I had to call ems because I thought I was dying. All my vitals were fine except for a fever. After the initial reactions I started having severe anxiety. It's been over 24 hours and I still feel like I'm on drugs and I'm definatley still anxious. Never again will I take this drug. If it has the ability to make someone feel like this it should be taken off thee market!!!

I have trouble urinating after taking Mucinex D. Other than that it works very well for me.

I had a terrible night. Very similar to the others posted here. I took the 12 hour pill around 7:30 last night and I awoke at 4am to use the restroom. While in the restroom I almost passed out. I quickly rinsed my face with some water and called for my husband. He said I was as white as a sheet. I told him I knew it was the medicine b/c this had happened to me before a few years back but I never really knew it was bc of the mucinex. Since the first time I have tried the 4hour pills and w/o the DM and I've never had that reaction again..until last night. So there is something definitely wrong with the extended tabs with DM. I have felt jittery, and restless all night...and even felt like I was having a panic attack. I will NEVER take this medicine again!!!! Never....it is much better to suffer with the cold than to feel sick and scared.

Oh and if you guys are getting dizzy and what not I would reccomend taking a smaler dosage....common sense

All I have to say is works quite efficiently for what I need it to do thank you mucinex, for helping me breathe like a champ!

This medicine works wonders for chest congestion but I have had to adjust to only taking it during the day even though it does no good to take it half of the day and let it build back up at night. When taken at night, I have severe restlessness, tossing and turning all night, nightmares and strange off the wall dreams during the random 20 minute intervals of sleep I am able to get and it suppresses my appetite.

NEVER WILL I EVER AGAIN TAKE MUCINEX. I woke up one morning to a little congestion and decided to take mucinex for the first time. After about 3-4 hours after taking the medication I felt dizzy, out of body, panicy, anxious, nervous and everything else terrible. I was really concerned for my mental health because it had never occurred to me that it was the mucinex. I was shocked to find all the similarities that other people had from this medication. Its been like 32 hours now and am still having occasional waves of just feeling "off". I legit thought i was having a panic attack and my mind was racing in the worst ways. DON'T TAKE THIS DRUG!!!

I have been taking Mucinex for the last three days to help get rid of my congestion when to my surprise yesterday morning I woke up and had a huge outbreak of hives all over my entire body! It looked like I had been bitten by a thousand mosquitoes on my arms, legs, back, stomach (luckily not on my face). I immediately panicked and realized that it had to be a direct reaction from the Mucinex as I had never taken it before. I immediately stopped taking it and also took Claritan which seemed to clear it up by the end of the day. I still have a few hives and will never take this medication ever again- was so frightening!

I suffer from cronic constipation and have for years and years. While taking Mucinex I had normal bowel movements with no pain! I realize I was drinking a lot of water daily with the Mucinex, but have tried increasing my water intake after finishing the Mucinex a few weeks ago, but that didn't help. I am back to being constipated with my normal three day elimination! What chemical is in Mucinex that would correct my cronic consipation? Over the years I have tried every remedy, i.e. known to man!

Took it the night before last (a generic version). Immediately got rid of the mucous that was keeping me awake. Soon began to make my stomach feel yucky. Ate some bread in case I didn't have enough food in my stomach. Had some crazy dreams. (Which in and of itself is not a complaint- I think crazy dreams are quite entertaining.) The next morning I felt nauseous, panicky and out-of-body. All day (yesterday) my stomach felt upset. Last night, I could not sleep worth a lick. That's why I stumbled on this website- I had to get out of bed because I felt panicky, racing heart, jittery. I'm tired, but no way can I sleep. This morning I STILL feel nauseous! Ironic how well it clears up mucous. But the side effects aren't really worth it to me!

Mucinex DM 12hr- More like 15-20 hr for me. Tight-feeling muscles, dialated pupils, weird dreams, shaky, dizzy, slight delerium....but hey! Coughing is no longer dry and id rather feel loopy than sick! Overall rating 8.5

My daughter, 14, who is 5'4 and an athletic 120 lbs,  was told by a physician to take Robutusin DM and Mucinex.  After looking at both packages, it seemed like the Mucinex DM had the best dosage of Guifesin and Dextro for the money.  BIG mistake.  The 10 mg of Dextro in Robu. vs. the 60 in the Mucinex DM was NOT worth it.  She couldn't sleep, upset stomach, anxiety attack, shaking, dilated pupils, feels sick all over.  I made a mistake. Perhaps the increased Dextro made her sick.  She is staying home until these side effects wear off.

I have a friend that has really bad dreams from taking mucinex. Is that normal or ok?????

It is an effective product; however, if you are prone to diarrhea and/or elevated blood pressure, you should use with caution.  It's the middle of the night and though I have little but productive coughing, my blood pressure is up and so am I! 

My first experience with MusinexDM resulted with immediate fever, chills, aches, etc. The closer I got to the next 12 hour dose, the better I felt so did not take the second dose. Contined the next week with Benedryl. That seemed to dry up the mucous until the next four hour dose but when I quit taking it the mucous was back.  Tried the Musinex again, taking only one dose at 9 p.m. Is working wonderfully!  Getting a full night of restful sleep and the "unstuffed" feeling lasts all day.  It has been YEARS since I could breath out of both nostrils.  I am just online to see if I can safely take one dose every night for an extended period of time...like maybe the rest of my life! 

I have been sick with allergies/asthma/sinusitis for over a week and when I took Mucinex DM I made sure to read the label carefully. My carton said to take 1 every 12 hours and no more than 2 in 24 hours. After taking the first pill it had no effect on my cough or congestion. 6 hours later I needed releif to get some sleep. It helped me sleep much better and I wasn't coughing anymore, but this product needs a warning not to drive or operate machinery. I felt euphoria that was similar to being drunk. I had a change in attitude and seemed to talk and act with no tact. I also had quite a bit of memory loss and blackouts. My sister and fiancee both tell me of things I said and did that were completely uncharacteristic to my behavior, and I have no memory of the incidents. This product works great with couch and congestion, but needs to be regulated as strongly as Pseudoephedrine. I downgraded to mucinex d, which works ok, but at least I can go to work without worry of making an ass of myself.

Anxiety and chest pains from taking Mucinex DM, never taking this again.

Everytime I get sick, I have to take either children's medicine or 1/2 the dose of meds because my body is so sensitive to them. I took Mucinex this week along with Dayquil and noticed that I had a hard time breathing, but thought it was because I was sick. My heart rate increased rapidly and I began to pace back and forth because I felt like I was going to have a panic attack! I don't think I'll be taking this med again...

I was in bed after taking the Mucinex-DM. I though I had gas- NO! It was diarrhea -it just came out and I was covered.  I thought it was just from being sick but I now realize every time I take the Mucinex it leads to violent diarrehea within an hour.
I believe its due to the Magnesium.  I still take it but only if I can stay home all day.

update:  I stopped taking the Mucinex DM about 36 hours ago, and now my cough is worse, and the chest congestion is back with a vengeance. Last night before bed my chest actually felt pretty clear, but now I'm back where I started, and actually feel a little worse than before.

Last night I couldn’t sleep a wink from all of the congestion and uncontrollable coughing, and I became paranoid and fearful that I would suffer congestive heart failure or something like that.  I took the dosage exactly as instructed on the package (1 to 2 tablets every 12 hours, not to exceed 4 tablets in 24 hours).  I am now just sitting and of virtually continuously hocking up phlegm out of my throat for hours on end while spitting incessantly into a cup so I don't vomit on my own saliva.  This is the worst drug I've ever tried….NEVER AGAIN. This stuff is dangerous.

After taking Mucinex DM 12hr, I started to have a small headache near the base of my head behind my right ear. Within about 2-3hrs I was in sever pain. Very intense and could get in a postion were I could relax. After 8hrs I want to go to the emergency room. I'll never take the DM again.

I felt as bad taking Musinex as I did, not taking it. I wondered why I felt such strange pains in my chest, which I normally never have. Also, I definitely felt anxiety, around dying. I've never felt so bad, and it's JUST a cold. Everyone's raving that it's so good, but I don't like it.
There's something that gave me a strange vibe about it from the start.

I took Mucinex DM because I couldn't sleep from coughing chest congestion.  I took it around 12:00 & fell asleep.  At 4:30 in the morning I awoke having the worst panic attack I've ever had in my life.  I had cold sweats, heart palpitations, high blood-pressure, & I was in danger of hyper-ventilating.  I felt like I had done some powerful drug, & was "freaking out".  It was a genuinely frightening experience, & I will never take this product again.  Oh, yeah, my chest congestion was relieved though.  Whoopee.

took extra strength mucinex... no clue why, but caused extreme pain throughout hips and legs which made it impossible to sleep.

I took mucinex after four days with the flu had left me feeling like I was drowning in chest congestion. Cleared up the congestion WONDERFULLY, however, gave rise to new problem: serious diarrhea. I am now home from work for yet another day, this time not because of the flu, but because I can't be too far away from the toilet.

within a few hours after taking mucinex d i began feeling frusterated, impatient, aggitated, short tempered, and felt overall not myself.  i had to put my 1 and 3 year olds to bed early to avoid them dealing with monster mom.  the sinus problems went away as did my severe headache, but with these side effects, i do not forsee myself using it again.

First I want to say, I was told by two Pediatricians that Mucinex does not work for kids.  They stated that there are no real studies that prove that it works. Now, Mucinex DM (1200 mg horse pill) gave me diarrhea about an hour after taking it.  I gave me heart palpitations that would not stop until after about 12 hrs. of course then follows a horrible headache! $16.00 down the drain.  Well, I guess maybe since people are still buying it, maybe Mucinex will be able to get some real studies done and maybe they can improve it.  This product is no different than any homeopathic medicine not FDA approved or regulated medicine.  Mucinex gets to sell what I think is a bit expensive for being over the counter and no real studies to prove that it works!

Liquid Poop... took just ONE pill at 1:00pm and on the toilet 4 times already and it has only been 2 hours since i took it... i sure hope this goes away.  Well i know the bottle is cause I'm not taking it again.  It's funny how on the box it doesn't say that diarrhea is a side-effect.

I started taking it Thursday. By Saturday had 6 doses. I had a fitful sleep Friday night, Saturday was tossing all night with zero sleep. Stopped taking it Sunday,but had another totally sleepless night.
How long does this stay in your system

I took it at about 9:30 pm, then I went to bed.  I awoke at about 2:30 with an unexplained nervousness and had trouble getting back to bed.  Not realizing it was the medicine, I again took it the next night at around the same time.  I again awoke at 2:30 with an unexplained nervousness accompanied with numb lips.  I won't be taking it a third time.

I took it last night and felt dizzy and outside myself....then about 3 hours into it I had several bouts of diahrrea and stomach is still not right today....it did quiet my cough but I didn't bring anything up. Kind of scarey--will NOT take this again.

I experienced mild diarrhea, but it did help surpress my cough.

I have had the same experience. I have not been able to smell of teate anything since Jan 25th. Has your ability to taste returned?

What are the side affects that you are still trying to get help for?

I started taking the Mucinex DM at 9-10pm, then went to bed. I woke up at 2:32 and start coughing up a mouth full of mucus. After I was done hacking it all out, I proceed to go to bed, but I was still coughing. Mucinex DM didn't suppress my cough, it just took out the mucus. (Still coughing after taking 2 tablets)

i had a minor flu with a terrible cough so someone recommended mucinex dm. the good thing about it is that you don't need to have food in your stomach to take it. the only bad thing i experienced was really bad diarrhea. i had barely been eating because i don't have much of an appetite when i'm sick. it happened 2 days in a row so i know that it wasn't anything i had eaten. it worked really well for my cough, but BEWARE OF LIQUID POOP!!

I had bloody bowels this morning from taking it.  And my tummy hurts.  Why aren't all of these horrible side affects written on the packaging?

well this is a little different but when i took it last night i could not fall asleep i did start to shake but that is also because i had a fever before taking it. Anyway, at about 2 am i was hallucinating that i was a doctor in vietnam and I'm not sure why but when i was fixing people some chinese guys came in (i know i was in vietnam, but they were chinese) and they were very resistent to being fixed. after my tour in vietnam i had another hallucination about some argument about sushi and i was lying in the middle of the hallway and people were yelling at me about how much i should pay the workers and how much money i will get. and during this whole thing i was tottally aware that i was awake. my suggestion is that no one ever take mucinex EVER!

I had Anxiety and i had dizziness and i also had nervousness and i had tremors.This medcine is bad/And i stiill have the side effects and trying to get help now.i will never take MucinexDM ever again.

I took 2 tablets of Mucinex DM, it dried up the mucus, but did not really suppressed my cough.  I don't feel better because it caused me to have extreme dry mouth.  I feel more chest compression than before.  I also feel dizzy and i afraid to sleep because I'm afraid the dosage may have been a little too much for me.  I don't like the way I'm feeling right now and is up in the middle of the night to research side effects of Mucinex.  I will never take Mucinex again.  I hope this medication wares off soon.  

I "lost" an hour the other morning. I had taken one half a Mucinex. I didn't realize that you aren't supposed to cut them. But a whole Mucinex was too much. It's very effective for reducing coughing due to mucus. Not realizing that it could be a side effect, I took another half the next day. Since then (for 2 days now), my head is kind if buzzing. My ears are kind of plugged. It's hard to describe. I hope it goes away by today.

i had a really bad cold last week,took actifed to get some relief but it really dried up my mucous membranes, so i decided to take 2mucinex er tabs for the congestion..never again!! I thought it was everything BUT the mucinex, they list diarrhea as a rare side effect, but after my own experience and much internet research, it is very much a COMMON side effect of this medicine. maybe next time i'll only take one tab like a good patient :)

I have taken Mucinex.D about 6 times it helped. it also gave me an urge to urinate but when i try it would only trickle. It would take a long time just standing there. it's the worse feeling

i had a sister who had a severe side effect from mucinex dm. she went through severe body shaking and her muscles conlvsed for over three days straight. she was in a lot of pain and as i write this she is still in the hospital.

Took Mucinex 1200mg about 4 hours ago and have not felt any side effects. My coughing has stoped and I'm also drinking ginger tea to stop prevent any nausea since its a gigantic pill.

WHen swallowed only 1 1200 mg pill breathing felt almost impossable couldnt sleep throat was swelling, some people are allergic I think never will I down one of those again, very scary experience.

The first time I took Mucinex I thought it worked great and definitely relieved my coughing.  I did take this with a full meal.  The next time I took it, I noticed mild stomach upset, feeling very gassy.  Tonight I took it about an hour after a meal and started feeling sick about 6 hours later.  I've been up most of the night with feeling nausous, chills and running to the bathroom every 5 minutes with diahrea.  I will NOT take this medicine again!

I took Mucinex D this morning, at around 2am because of not being able to sleep due to my congestion.  I have been sweaty and not able to sleep at all.  I have been nervous, and just plain not feeling well all morning.  It would figure that I get 4 days off, and have to deal with this kind of stuff, but now I can't sleep at all.  Is there anything I can do?

It makes my blood pressure go up and causes a persistent headache, which is more than likely due to dehydration...discontinuing use and taking steps to rehydrate.

took Mucinex at 6:30pm, by 9pm was feeling nausiated. Went to lie down and 2 hours later began vomitting with diarrhea and hot flashes, sweats, shaking. This would repeat every 2 hours until 9am.

About 1/2 hour after taking 1 tab Mucinex Expectorant maximum strength. Same result after taking MucinexD Expectorant & nasal decongestant. Facial numbness: right side, eye socket, cheek, tongue, ear, roof of mouth,Teeth & gums, top of head, slight dizzy-stuffy feeling.

Took Mucinex DM (1200mg) at 7:30AM, by 9am was experiencing extreme vertigo. Cannot safely drive, walk down stairs, etc.

I took Mucinex DM and I was extremly weak and tired I could hardly stand or even move my arms. My mind was scattared as well. I had a hard time comprehending some things. At one point I felt like I was in a swimming pool, veeeery floatly. Now, as I type, I'm nervous.

I just started last night the use of Mucinex DM and I had a pleasant night without cough. My only minor side effect has been a slightly headache, but this is nothing compared with the persistent cough that I had before.

I took Mucinex today, two 600mg tablets around 12pm, by 1245p i was having sweats, dizzy, shaking, off-balanced and very anxious.  I think the anxiety was a result of these terrible symptoms I was having. we were eating lunch and i thought i wouldn't be able to walk out of the restauraunt.  It was very disorienting and frightening. I haven't taken any other medications but this today. 

I took mucinex and every time it burns my stomach so bad.  Each time seems to be worse.  I have taken it so it can relieve my congested chest because it does work well once the pain subsides in my stomach.

how long did it take for u head to feel completly normal?? i got headaches but really small ones dat happens every so often through out da day. AND WHAT IT THE BEST WAY TO GET RID OF ALL THE SIDE EFFECTS?!?! WHAT IS THE BEST MEDICINE FOR IT?!?!

wow, I am surprised to hear all the side effects. Mucinex has been a god send for me. I would get bronchitis spring and fall, and since I have started taking Mucinex, I don't get the tickle in my throat, but I regularly drink lots of water, cause it will loosen that phlegm, but you need to help get it up by drinking water too. Sorry to hear it has affected you all the way it has, but for me, I am so happy to take it, it makes life so much better!

I have COPD/emphysema... and a few months ago I used Mucinex to try and help clear me up but, I didn't know at that time..it only made it worse. I was taken to ER. Just last week I started having trouble breathing and coughin up the garbage in my lungs again. So,I took Mucinex.. "Bad Idea" it did losin the mucous but made it like glue and hard to cough up. I stopped taking it and started using dollar-store Allergy pills and cough drops.. within a couple hours I was coughin this garbage out. I think there should be a warning for those of us with lung issue's. I'm only opperating off 1/3 of my lung compassidy and this is not something I should or ever would use again.

I took mucinex dm maximum strength last night around 2:30 am because i couldn't stop coughing and it the cough wasn't letting me go to sleep..someone from the pharmacy at walgreens recommended it..anyways around 6:30 am i started throwing up and than my hands and feet started locking inwards and i felt my stomach was turning..i had to call the ambulance cause i felt so bad..never again will i take that!

i went to my doctors and he said i got bronchitis. im not coughing at all (i dont know why my doctor did not want me to cough up da phlegm) so i went to get some mucinex to help me cough. i only took one pill yesterday, and it made me feel a little dizzy, had some tingling on my wrists and ankles. i felt some anxiety or a panic attack, i thought my heart beat was beating pretty fast, but acording to da books, it was beating at normal rate, and wats worst is dat da chest pain dat was slowly going away a day at a time, came back with a vengeance and putting pressure on chest again, like i started da symptoms for bronchitis all over again. please tell me im not da only one with this problem, especially with da chest pains. if so, how long did da chest pains last? and wat did u do to reduce it, and make it GO AWAY FOR GOOD!!! dats da only problem i have. i breathe fine, and i only coughed for a little when i took it. please!! i hope some of u mucinex survivors have experience this and can answer my questions!! thank u

how long did it take for ur chest pains to go away?? my doctor said i have brochitis but i wasnt coughing at all. so i took one pill of mucinex, then i started getting rashes, tingles in my wrist, and around my ankles. wats funny, is dat my chest pains were almost gone, till i took da pill and now i feel like im starting over again with da chest pains. so how long did it take to get rid of or wat did u use to get rid of da pain????

It gave me a nasty migraine headache, and I can't recall having a headache this bad since college.  It took several days to get it all flushed out of my system, and my scalp is still sore - the sensation of having my hair pulled up too tight.  I had used it before without problem, but never again.  It was the new cough control formula.

i took mucinex last night and a few hours after i woke up and was not able to go back to sleep, i don't have chest congestion anymore but now i can't stop shaking, and i feel so week. i woke up with the worst heart burn and took some pepto, i threw that up not to long after. My boyfriend insisted that i take mucinex and i told it made me feel funny and i thought i would give it another try...NEVER again will i take this. i feel like i cant breath and its hard to hold up my head, i am so shaky and disoriented. 

my grandson, who lives with me, is bipolar and has a really bad substance abuse problem.  He's abused just about everything, at least 20-30 drugs of all descriptions. 
The most current is either cough syrup (Robitussin DM) or Musinex DM in tablet form.  Last night, to celebrate getting a job, he decided to take about 20 Musinex DM.  He has serious side effects this morning.  The saddest, worst example of a human being you can imagine.
I've done the review and research on the web, but I don't know where to go next.  Suicide is not far away.  I'd like to get this handled before that possibility.

Also one other thing. Please post which Mucinex you tried. There is regular Mucinex, Mucinex-D or Mucinex DM. The DM is for the dextromethorphan, which does all sorts of crazy stuff to many people, not only Fibros. It is found in many many cold and flu meds, not only Mucinex-DM

Hey if you have Fibromyalgia and got sick on Mucinex, it's because you are supposed to.
Please read the book:"What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia" by Dr. St. Amand. It's called the Guaifenisen Protocol and we use Mucinex/Guaifenisen to reverse our Fibro symptoms!!! The protocol is very difficult and painful, for the first months and you experience all your Fibro symptoms as though they are going backwards very fast. This is a good sign that it is working for you. i know this sounds silly. It did yo me as well. So i did it to prove it was wrong, but after 14 months I have zero Fibro symptoms.
The Mucinex people are fully aware of this Protocol and allow for us to get it at cheaper prices at a Compounding Pharmacy in CA just for Fibros.
So unless you want to do the protocol (and get better) you cannot take any Mucinex or anything with guaifenesin in it or you WILL get sick.

I took Musinex for chest congestion and coughing. I woke up so dizzy and disoriented that I couldn't get out of bed. Hope it is gone by tomorrow! I will never use his product again and I will warn my friends against using Musinex!!  I missed an entire day of work and was unable to even walk!

Im a healthy 29 year old female.I took one Mucinex Dm last night, I woke a few hours later unsure where i was, Was so Dizzy i could Barely stand. My thoughts were jumbled and crazy, I wondered if i had a stroke. My nerves were so bad that i could'nt even lay down or sit still. I finally fell asleep for a couple hours before i had to work,I woke at 8 in the morning still felling like i was in what i call "Mario Land" NOTHING FELT REAL.AND NOT IN A FUN WAY. I felt like i had been hit by a truck, I had a a fever and sweats, Was shaking and sick at my stomach. it is now nearly 24 hours and i am still feeling side effects, I took a cold shoer and feel a little better. I threw them away and Never again will i  take this drug again.

My Husband takes no other drugs or medicine, will not even take tylenol. Our First Experience taking the OTC Mucinex was about a month ago I talked him into take one and took one, be both had congestion and cough. The next day we both woke up going to the bathroom and could not stop, We both thought it was a virus. I have taken it before and had no side effects, so we did not connect it to the Mucinex. Well last night my husbands chest was hurting from coughing and congestion so we thought he should take a Mucinex...What a mistake he has been so sick cannot stop going to the bathroom, he is very confused, weak. We will never take that again.

I took this for the last two days and I feel like I am in a fog and I have tingly/numb hands and feet. 

I did have sinus infection symptoms (stuffy nose, cough...) Now I have all that plus I'm constantly dizzy, I'm nauseous, I have to struggle to breathe, and the smell of the pills is constantly lingering in my head and making my nausea worse.  I have awful stabbing headaches and the stuff still isn't making me cough up anything!  I sure wish I could go back in time a week to when I just had a sinus infection...

My doctor has had me use mucinex on several occasions, no side effects, not drowsy, it was like taking a sugar pill, didnt cough up more or less, nothing, nada, zilch..

Same here!  The first time, I chalked it up to sour milk in my cereal.  Today is definitely not the milk!

mucinex is definitely expelling something from my body, but it ain't mucus.  sure wish my toilet had handle bars.

I was treated for acute sinusitis today.  Doctor prescribed a Z-pack antibiotic (which usually does the trick for me), and he also suggested Mucinex.  Well, the drug store advised me to use the extra strength dose (1200 mg) .  It was the regular chest congestion, no for sinuse congestion. That seemed a bit confusing to me but I assumed the pharmacist knew what she was doing.  So, I took one table at around 5:30 pm today.  It is an extended release tablet, so now, about 3 hours later, I woke up from a very brief nap, which I hadn't planned on taking.  I just konked out I guess, and woke up to dizziness, some tingling in my face and finger tips, and just plain disorientation.  I would definitely not be wanting to drive right about now, or do anything that required alot of focused thought.  It is difficult for me to even type this----I told my 20 year old son.  Do not take that mucinex that I just put in the medicine cabinet.  It might work on the chest congestion, but it makes you feel so strange that you likely won't want to take it again.  I know that I'm not -- what a waste of money.  I really don't think this product should be over the counter, plus is has nothing on the box listing any kind of side effects, or that the product could make you drowsy.  That is really bad---it didn't even have a package insert stating any such things.  With this posting site, now I can see why.  I'll just stick to my Z-pack and lots of water.  thank you.

I am sick to my stomach and bloated.  I have only taken it twice and stopped it several days ago.  It has not changed the symptoms at all.  What is bothering most is the new pain I have in my chest.

Doctor recommended largest dosage to relieve cough.  However, after one week diarrhea set in.  You can tell as soon as you swallow the pill after about one week, the stomach upset begins and continues downward.  Mucinex is great, but continued use at the maximum dosage beyond one week is not recommended based on my experience with diarrhea.

I used Mucemxo several weeks and it worked great, but when I told me doctor about it, he suggested I syop because of unknown reaction to some special med in Mucenix.  Iam 70, w/ type 2 diabetes, and other problems.  DO you know what he might mean?  I have an appoointment with him in several weeks.  Any suggestions?

1st time taking Musinex DM. On a red eye flight. Worst experience ever. About 2 hrs. of taking this Musinex DM I woke up with tingling all over my body, sweating profusely, nausa, and can't think clean.. It lasted around 9 hours. I prayed for this darn pill to get the heck out of my system and never again will Musinex Dm be allowed in my house.

my stomach is making pretty loud funky noises, i feel pretty nauseous, and kind of dizzy. and the worst part is that i still have a terrible cough.

I am an 85 yr old woman. With just one MucinexDM, I experienced chills, fever, itching and sleeplessness for two nights. I prayed to die.
How could something like this be on the market?

I took one Mucinex DM today at 2pm (my first one ever), and around 5 started feeling nauseous and then it progressed into a full-on high.  I'm uncoordinated, dizzy, tipsy, and my brain feels foggy.  It's not unpleasant, but I was hoping to get some things done tonight and that's probably out of the question now.  I'm a little clearer, but am worried about all the potential side effects of this crap, and will only take this as a recreational drug from now on if I ever take it again.  It does NOT make me more functional.  I hope I don't have a "cerebrovascular accident".  Basically, I'm totally whacked out.  I hope I'm okay in the morning.

     My wife has severe fibromyalgia.  I would like to try the Guaifenesin treatment for her.  We can't seem to get our many doctors to do anything for her.  Can you tell me what manufacturers are reliable for this medication.  I understand Gui-Aid is just Guaifenesin, would this be good?  Please respond, or if anyone else suffers from Fibromyalgia and using this medication respond.  Mucinex sounds like a very bad choice to subsititute.

I would like to share my experience with anyone that can read this.I have Fibromyalgia.I use guaifenesin to expell all the calcium phosphates from my body.I have been taking it over 6 years.Mucinex pretty much has a patent on the product now.I have had several nasty episodes with this drug.This time ,I have been confined to my home and in horrid pain.I can not sleep from the pain in my muscles and nerves.My vision is blurred.I have ringing in my ears.Mucinex has destroyed my nervous system starting with severe unbearable pain from my neck down to my right shoulder blade with stabbing pain~ down my right arm where I can not even write checks to pay my bills. After 6 days of this~I am slowly recovering and will NEVER take this product again. They need to put a warning on their label.I also have a friend that went through the same thing on this so this is not an isolated case. Other guai I have taken has not done this to me.I am wondering why Mucinex is causing all these problems ? Maybe the fillers on the tablets ~I will stick to the capsules of another manufacturer.

i took mucinex dm while i was trying out a new birth control... the side effects from mucinex are so bad i almost thought i had overdosed on hormones! it was a lightheaded, about-to-faint feeling - not what i needed in class and work. and thanks to the extended release, i get to feel it for a full twelve hours. -__-

I started taking MuccinexD yesterday. I didnt know if it was just me being sick or if it was the medicine until I called the on call doctor. I got bad diarreah, and everytime I got up I felt dizzy and almost outside myself. It is such a weird feeling. Also my mind races and I woke up every hour on the hour last night. I swear I couldnt get any sleep. The side effects lasted for more than  12 hours for me. There is no way I could go to work and function properly like this. Who ever made MuccinexD must be out of their mind. NEVER AGAIN!

After 24 hrs of taking it, I got incredible stomach pain, diarrhea and dizziness.

I'm 13 years old and I just took 2 mucinexDM for the first time. 15 minutes after taking the pill I am feeling somewhat light for some reason. Kind of weak. I'm not quite sure if I've been on it long enough to know if it's working the way it should or not, but, knowing i have a weak system, and after reading all of those effects on you poor people.... IAMFREAKINGOUT. I hate serious anal discharge.. i hate stuffy noses.. i hate being in pain! Jesus marry and moses.. please GOD don't this happen to me... I just wanted to clear my throat because it was bothering me.. Now, it may BE even WORSE than ever... Jesus i think my stomach is starting to feel abnormal.. Oh my God... I think this maybe a gift from Satan himself... Oh Jesus GOD help me now... >.< This was SO not worth it... My head is starting to hurt.. ....

I took Mucinex DM now I have lost my scent and taste it's been 6 weeks now. 

I took Mucinex DM last night around 1 am and felt strange soon after, but by 6 am I had diarrhea, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, and chills. It did help my cough, but this product is certainly not worth the side effects. From all the similar stories I've read on here, I think this product shouldn't even be on the market. I'd much rather suffer through some congestion than to feel that terrible again. I mean, I seriously thought I was going to die. Never using Mucinex again.

I took 1 Mucinex DM extended release on Monday and felt like I was on acid about 2 hours later... without the actual fun parts.  I was very anxious, experienced a "speed" sensation... always needing to keep moving, couldn't be inside, had to keep myself distracted from what I was feeling and stay preoccupied.  This lasted for the entire 12 hours as described on the box.
Once I was able to lay down for sleep, I was up most of the night coughing.
Then Tuesday, I felt like it was still in my system.  I was extremely medicine heady and pupils were still dialated.  I still couldn't eat much solid food.  I kept to fresh cucumbers and carrots with a few almonds for protien. 
Now it's Wednessday and I feel a lot better, but still have anxiety sometimes since I've never taken this before, or any other over the counter drugs like it, and am still not feeling 100%. 

After taking Mucinex I experienced a severe sinus headache that nearly had me in tears. I took 2 tabs at about 6PM and was in bed about 2hours later because i couln't stand the pain of the headache. I had a diffcult time getting to sleep and staying asleep.

I am 62 years old female and I have peripheral neuropathy. I took Mucinex-D last night and I could not go to sleep. After sleeping for an hour I wake up and was very nervous, dizzy and hypertensive. That was basically steepness night and  my legs were very restless.

I just took 1 tsp of children's mucinex (only 100 mg of main ingredient) and feel like I have a fever (but don't).  Flushed skin and freezing. Very tired but cannot rest.  Haven't checked my blood pressure but wishing I had my bp machine here right now to check it.  My cough has not stopped and, if anything, has gotten worse.  Does seem to be helping my child who has had no side effects but who has only taken 3 doses.  I know I will not continue and not sure I want to continue with my child.  This is freaky!

I took Mucinex DM last night and awoke a few hours later very disoriented, dizzy and nauseous. It stopped my coughing, however I spent the entire day in bed due to the side effects not the cough. My husband takes regular Mucinex daily and has had no apparent side effects. I will NEVER take this drug again! It is 19 hours after my dose and I am still experiencing the side effects.

i have been taing mucinex dm and my urine now smells like the mucinex pill.....is this ok?

I've had a lingering chest cold for several weeks and have twice tried Mucinex DM to deal with it. In short, it does provide relief from coughing and hacking phlegm but has caused severe diarrhea each time, almost as if preparing for a colonoscopy. I've also tried Claritin D, but that really caused unacceptable urinary problems. Although it really makes me drowsy, Nightquil seems to have fewest side effects.

I took a Mucinex D extended release tablet  and about 30-45 minutes after taking it I experienced a racing heart/anxiety. My blood pressure was high: 147/99.   This medicine works ok, but the side affects are not ok.

One hour after taking Mucinex extra strength I had tingling and numbness in feet, hands, face had trouble breathing right hand shaking uncontrollably went to Urgent Care (my husband driving) they called an ambulance and I ended up in the hospital. After MANY tests and hours the cause was left to be determined due to the Mucinex.

Forgot, I also had bloating with lots of gas.

Took one tablet at 10PM. Couldn't fall asleep until 5AM. I was wired like a major caffeine high. I was on no other med and definately no caffeine. Don't know what else it could have been?

I have been battling with some chronic sinusitis (Dr's still don't know if its bacterial or allergic) - so I was instructed to use Mucinex with Afrin at night. I took 2 small drops of Afrin in each nostirl, and 1 Mucinex D tablet and had a horrible reaction. I slept for about 2 hours and woke up with severe palpitations (115BPM), anxiety, tingling all over my body, and shortness of breath - after trying to calm myself down I got a surge of dizziness, which then immediately threw my heart back into a palpitating panic. This cycle of palpitations/tingling with the dizzy spells lasted for nearly 6 hours....and left remnants of a faster HR (btwn 85-95) for the remainder of the day.  Needless to say, I will not be using this medication again. 

Took 4 hour version til bottle was empty & switched to 12 hour type.  Headaches, teeth sensitivity to cold, teeth hurt so bad went to dentist.  Feeling awful, will stop taking.

Contrary to other posters, my first Mucinex experience was incredible! First of all, it dried up all the mucus, and quick. Second, I felt a "high-type feeling," a euphoria not unalike Addarall or Riddlin'. I was at work, and was pounding it out. Also, I felt a marked increase in my sexdrive. I am not kidding at all- still at work, I put on Mariah Carey's "Daydream" album (1995)- I NEVER listen to Mariah Carey. I will definitely be buying Mucinex again. 

I have a chest cold and cough and am coughing up a lot of green mucus. My doctor told me to take Mucinex which I did. The 12 hour extended version caused me to have severe shortness of breath. More so than I had when not taking anything at all. The next day I tried a generic version of mucinex in a 400 mg. size. It caused the same effect. Needless to say I won't be using that again.

I do point out that it's main ingredient is guaifenesin which is the same ingredient in Robitussin which I have taken without problems for years.

Im wondering does to much mucinex make you gain weight

I took only 1 tablet of MucinexDM what I experienced was dizziness, a bloated feeling and a lot of gas. The rest of this package will be returned for a refund.

I feel like i have a slight pressure in my chest after i took the pill today, is that normal?

About 90 minutes after taking Mucinex I started experiencing diarrhea like I have never had before. I will never take it again.

I was on Mucinex DM, was shopping when I suddenly became weak and started to shake. Half my body was hot, the other half was freezing. I was so weak and fet so funny I almost called 911 to get me out of the store. I had never experienced anything like that before. I sat down for awhile until I felt a little better then walked out of the store (leaving my groceries) and went sat in the car awhile until I felt I could make it home.

The next morning I was at the doctors, what ever that was scared the daylights out of me enough to make me go to the doctor asap! While sitting there in the doctors office, it happened AGAIN! Right in the middle of it, they called me in the back and my BP was high which shocked me and the nurse because mine as a rule, runs low. I put it together with the Mucinex and have never taken another one since! In fact, I threw them away and have not had another spell like that.

took mucinex twice a day for approx. 1 week. ok at first, then developed diarrhea followed by red, itching and burning rash on neck and chest. benadryl did not help. dr. told me to stop it immediately. i did and rash went away. just for my own experiment, i took another dose yesterday (after the rash had gone away) and woke up this morning with an itching neck. has to be the mucinex. disappointed, but not touching it again. &gt;:o

MY mother is in the hospital and she is on Mucinex, she is 83 and this medicine is making her have high blood pressure and she is tripping and the doctors can not figure out why REally they are not even trying to figure it out. Well, from reading this it is this med. not long after she has taken the med. this happens. It takes me her daughter to figure this out. She has not slept in 3 days. It looks like to me no one needs to take this. She is really freaking out. My daughter is a nurse and has not figured it out either. Thank goodness for the internet-with out this I would not have been able to figure it out. This feeling is scaring her to death and no on at the hospital will believe anything is happening to her. &gt;:o

I took Mucinex DM maxiumum strength (12 hour). One pill last night at 6:00 p.m. and one pill this morning at 6:00 am. By 9:00 am, I was having diarrhea. My husband had been taking the regular Mucinex over the last few days and complaining of fatigue, dizziness, and diarrhea but I just thought he was really sick. I feel like this medicine definitely extended his recovery time. He did not take any at all yesterday and he is feeling much better. :(

I took Musinex DM for the first time last night, stopped the coughing, but I had severe diarrhea in the am. Not worth the side effects for me.

I hate musinex I had the worst experince ever I felt like I was dying I was so scard it just started after I was driving I just had a small panic attack and next thing I knew I just had this weard feeling like what is life nothing should exsite type of attack I was so scard I took the musinex max it fliped me out trust me if u have mucus just wate it out :'(

I took Mucinex-Cough yesterday for the first time, it calmed my coughing and I was I able to breath right away, but didn't like the side effects at all, I had diarrhea all night and vomiting, I thought I was going to die, I felt so weak, I drank a glass of milk and some pills to control the diarrhea, it sounds pretty nasty, but I thought people need to know what this pill can cause.

:) I agree with you, Shawna...I will NEVER use any of the Mucinex products again...my cold symptoms I will get over eventually ... the side effects are scarey.

I took Mucinex for the first time last night. I drank plenty of water...but I didn't feel quite right after taking it...I woke up in the middle of the night with serious diarrhea that lasted for hours. I've heard a lot of people praise this product...it just didn't work for me.

I took one Mucinex DM as directed on the box and within a couple of hours I became extremely dizzy, developed tremors, felt nausiated and my heart rate increased. Although it relieved my symptoms, I will not take any in the future. (I'd rather be sick then suffer the side effects.)
