Nitrofurantoin

This medication makes me feel so ill. The stomach problems seem to persist for days - feels worse than the uti i is treating, but I suppose there is no alternative to medication, as the uti has to be stopped . I feel sick and nauseous but also have aches in my arms and legs. It has been suggested that taking it with live yoghurt may stop the nausea. I'll try that today, but the fact that I have sought out the experience of others demonstrates my concern about the way I feel. I didn't get a patient leaflet with my prescription. Is this a general experience?

horrible non-stop headaches! constant nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, vomited once in the morning after the first day of taking the medicine. Ugh, but it is getting rid of the UTI.

I took this medicine for the first time ever to treat a UTI. I had a headache before I took the first pill and soon after I had the pill, I got hit by a migraine and was throwing up all morning. At first I did not blame the nitrofurantoin but now I'm sure it is because of it. I've been having stiffness, chills, nausea and vomiting as well as headaches non-stop while on this antibiotic. Driving me nuts!

I'm a 49 year old female in very good health who was prescribed nitrofurantoin by a urologist as a preventative measure after having a urethra dilation. I did not have any side effects until day 6 of the 100mg twice daily dosage. On the 6th day I awoke with fever, chills, severe body aches and difficulty breathing. On the 7th day I was covered with a bright red, spotty rash on my legs, arms and torso. By the 8th day the fever had subsided but the rash spread to my face, hands, and toes. This was a very frightening experience. I urge you to avoid this medication if possible.

It is a very dangeroud drug and should not be on the market. I have had all of the side effects and will report to the doctor telling him of those side effects. I will never take this drug again, no matter what.

For prostate infection, planned to take for 30 days.  The sixth antibiotic being taken due to sensitivity to the more typical prostate antibiotics.  Very apprehensive by now.  I could feel the first pill hit me, not pleasant.  After second pill, mild intermittent tingling in the hands and feet.  Mild shortness of breath but can climb the stairs OK, could be mild panic attacks, cannot distinguish.  After 30 pills the intermetient tingling is less frequent or absent between doses.  Seems to be working, prostate infections are hard to treat.  Concerned about sores on the tongue, don't know if this is a side effect, will see doctor if it gets worse.  Can't wait to finish the regimen.

Has anyone experienced very dry eyes while taking this medicine? Since starting the medicine, I have had nausea, diarrhea, and now this new symptom...very dry eyes.

After 1 day I developed sevre flu-like body aches and total loss of appetite. It was 4 days before I remembered to read the side effect fact sheet and realized what this drug was putting me through.  I had shortness of breath wnen I tried to take a shower.  On the fourth day I thought my skin looked yellow.  I have not taken any for 2 days now but still have body aches.  It also elevated my bloodsugar as I am diabetic.  I have  learned that I will always read the fact sheets when I take a new (to me ) drug so I can recognize the side effects soonerl  I have been through hell!

My 9 year old daughter was presrcribe Nitrofurantoin for frequent UTI's. Now is having severe skin reactions, with red patches, itching and welting. She has also begun to have chest pain and complains of it affecting her breathing. I have had her to doctor once but will do so again as am worried about the chest pain.
I will never let her have this medication again!

constant eye twitching, dry eye, chills and painful headaches

Been taking for 4 days now, only complaint with them is constipation, and bright yellow urine.

Many adverse effects... neck pain and stiffiness, severe muscle aches and muscle tightening when sleeping causing long lasting pain. Confusion, general feeling of illness, stomach pain, agitation, extremely dry mouth, mood and mental changes, increased blood pressure, migraines. This was the only medication I was on. I will never take it again. Was being treated for kidney infection.

horrible neck pain and stiffness, also headache. 

Severe facial and neck rash which developed rapidly , chest tighness. Was hospitalized.

Luckily only on a 3 day course. Terrible neck pains and quite a bit of head ache!

I have been taking it for 2 days now and am experiencing the discolored urine (mine is a bright yellow) and now nausea is setting in.

Finger nails haave developed ridges, dry, splitting, white spots on them.  anyone else having this problem?

Has anyone ever had trouble with discoloured urine while taking nitrofurantoin?? Mine appears to have turned luminous green!!

After I took the medicine I had a severe non-stop headache that lasted 2 days, along with chills and pain/burning feeling around and in my ankles and my back was sore around the shoulder blades. Felt very sleepy as well. Vomitted only once the evening I took my first pill. I stopped taking it that night because I was scared of the symptoms I was having.

First time, started the day after finished the course of tablets,  with chills, fever, tight chest, tiredness, headache and then an itcy raised rash appeared around feet, ankles climbing up towards knees. Assumed it was a virus.  A month later on a second dose, symptoms appeared within two hours and were much worse.  Unfortunately, did not realise it was side effects and continued to take tablets for 4 days and felt so ill. When rash started and was appearing on other parts of body, realised it was an allergy.  Was advised to stop taking them and to take anithistimine.
