Vancomycin

It's called Red Man syndrome, and it is due to Vancomycin being infused to quickly. You're infusion rate should have been more carefully monitored. If they had just decreased your rate, instead of stopping it, you would have likely experienced the same reaction due to the vancomycin already being infused too quickly for 4 days. Sorry for your experience but you should know that it is likely not an allergic reaction to the drug in case your Doctor ever wants to put you back on vancomycin, the infusion rate should just be closely monitored.

I am doig OK with just weakness and being a little lethargic? Some naseua but more tired than anything?

YES- Vancomycin can be "nephrotoxic" or injure kidneys/cause acute kidney failure (high blood Creatinine = kidney failure) if dose is too high or kidneys aren't excreting enough vancomycin from blood. It is also "ototoxic" meaning it can damage your hearing.

It happened to me,40 years old & generally healthy but almost died.... was treated with intraveneous (IV) Vancomycin & IV Ceftriaxone for 9 days( supposeed to do it 6 wks) for a "suspected" lower back infection that I really never had.
My vancomycin blood levels quickly became too high (up to 50-80 ml/L instead of 5-15ml/L resulting in VANCOMYCIN TOXICITY both IV antibiotics were STOPPED on DAY 10 but I was VERY ILL for over a month as all my body mucosa (lining of mouth, inside eyelids, stomach, intestines, glands, vagina) became increasingly inflammed, reddened & felt "burned from the inside out", my red blood cell count (RBC) dropped low (including low Hemocrit & Hemoglobin), Lymphocytes dropped drastically(14.1 instead of 24-44) but Eosinophils were up and Monocytes were high (types of white blood cells ). Creatinine up to 4.4 (instead of 0.5-1.2) which was acute kidney failure due to drug toxicity.
Initially developed a FEVER & RED RASH ALL OVER BODY eventually top layer of skin "detached" from the base layer. I had SEVERE NAUSEA, fever, painful swelling lymph nodes, eyes dry, felt like myy body was "stewed meat", had difficulty staying awake/conscious, extreme lethargy, malaise, panicked, aggitated.
IF you can, get a 2nd OPINION FROM DIFFERENT DOCTORS NOT ALREADY INVOLVED WITH HIS CARE. MRSA infections can be dangerous enough without adding drug toxicity when they should be closely monitoring kidney function.

did your dad get so cold his body shake then did he get a high fever ..

My dad has MERSA from surgery and has been being treated by IV Vanomycin and now they are sending him back to hospital from rehab because his red blood cells ere down and his Creatinine is high.  could this be a side affect?

My Dad has been experiencing acute abdominal pain, lethargy and loss of appetite.  He was hospitalized for 2 days with these symptoms.  released without answers.  I think he is experiencing perotinitis. 

I had been on vancomycin for 4 weeks after knee surgery due to an infection.  I developed acute renal failure.  My creatinine level increased for a long time.

Loss of ballance constantly for 10 years now.

when i took this drug it seemed to help my infection then after 4 days i got a beat red eye on my left side where the pick line was the home health said it was only seasonal alergys then 5th day i broke out in a rash on my up body(chest) they took me off the drug and replaced it with cubicin
(dont know how to spell it) then next day it progressed worse and then they took me off all antibioctics it progressed to worsen for about a week after stopping the drug my boddy turned red EVERY where every where it turned red it pealed the about 3 days after my whole body turn red i started to peal it was a horrible experaince and i am still pealing this drug if used keep a close eye on it

my husband DIED after receiving Vancomycin in his dialysis bags .....he was not monitored for vancomycin.  He stopped breathing the nurses said.....that is his side effect of VAncomycin

I ended up with a staff infection after knee surgery. I have been on vancomyc for 10 days. I am experiencing naseau & chills. I will be on this iv medicine for 8 weeks total. Has anyone ever been on this drug for that long & if so how did your body hold up.

I developed a severe infection in my foot.  Hospitalized, they gave me large doseds of vancomycin iintravenously.  It caused my kidneys to fail, and I am now on dialysis three times a week.  Since Sept '09.  The kidneys do not seem to be coming back, and I am now facing probable kidney transplant. 

POST SURGERY I WAS TREATED WITH IV VANCOMYCIN FOR A SEVERE INFECTION. tHE MEDICATION PUT ME INTO KIDNEY FAILURE. HAD DIALYSIS 3 TIMES A WEEK FOR 3 WEEKS. WAS IN HOSPITAL FOR A MONTH. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE THERE.
