  • My 13mo old has been prescribed…

My 13mo old has been prescribed xopenex 1.25mgdo/3xday via neb. solution. While he was prescribed this once before, without noticable discomfort(he had a bout with RSV after the nanny exposed him to SEVERAL germy kids at the soft play park in the local mall as an infant:( (6mo)) I believe he was simply too young to realize he was miserable, or that the breathing tx seemed to help and I was giving him pain meds/fever reducers in conjunction with the breathing tx and that may have relieved some of the other side effects.

This time has not been so simple. While he did have a bit of a wheeze/cough when I took him into the ped, he was a happy-go-lucky, easy to get along with little fella. He has been a very happy kid since birth, and after tx with this med he will throw tantrims, have screaming outbursts, and general displays of rage. Known side effects of this are irritability, worsening of condition, sore throat, runny nose and... of all things... viral infections. While I appreciate the NP treating hhis cough(I had taken him in several times in the weeks preceeding his 1yr well baby visit, his doc didnt treat it/recognize it, then he went for his well check and was not given his immunizations due to the wheeze) I did ask multiple times if it was really necessary to keep him on the med as it seemed to be ineffective in treating current symptoms and I did not want to overmedicate my child.

Long story short I have decided to discontinue treatment at this time. I will get him in with an allergist and hope they will be able to tell me the problem with breathing...
